Fear

I looked at the grey mist that came from the North. It started to cover more and more of the river and the sky-high buildings in the distance. It was coming in a wall-like fashion from the north side and as far as I could see, it covered everything in my vision.

It was moving extremely quickly like a tsunami that was about to blow you away. As I gazed at it seconds before it touched me I knew the Apocalypse had come. I instinctively looked at my watch on my left hand, it showed that it was 18:22, Friday. It was the rush hour…

The mist seemed to penetrate everything as it entered the room. Even without breathing, it entered my body, I felt incomparable pain inside of me. I fell on the ground and started twitching. I felt pain in every cell, every bone and flesh of my being. I had never felt such pain in my entire life.

Before I knew it, I had lost my consciousness.

The next moment I woke up I had realised that probably no one had locked their rooms, it was too early. It came too quickly.

I prayed to the god that no one had turned into a monster.

I got up full of energy but noticed that my vision was blurry. I took out my contact lenses and realised that my vision has improved. I couldn't understand such a phenomenon. I felt around my body and felt a little bit strange. I felt that I had become a little bit buffer, and my old bones felt good.

I did a few push-ups and sit-ups, my whole body felt stronger. Weird.

I calmed down, put on my protective gear really silently and looked at the mirror. I looked a bit funny, but at the same time strong. As one crazy Russian guy once said, "Safety is the number one priority"

I clipped a baseball bat to my tool belt and grabbed a sword into my hands. The sword was like one of those Medieval knight types. It was in the shape of a cross with a thin but long two-sided blade. The handle was made from metal and leather. The blade was melted into the metal handle so that it could never escape.

I frowned and realised that I was thirsty. I put down my sword, took off my helmet and drank some water. Then I put on my helmet again and took the sword into my hands. I realised how ridiculous I was being. Although you can never be too safe. I lived for many years and have seen many people die from accidents and I for sure don't want to be one of them.

I sneak peeked through the window to check. I couldn't be too careful. I looked outside and I could see something spectacular, I saw fire coming from different parts of the city. Something major had definitely happened while I was knocked out. Other than that it was quite a nice day with the sun shining and not a single cloud today.

I looked at my watch it was already morning 10 am. I had slept for a total of 16 hours. Never in my life had I slept that long.

Just then I realised that I saw something that was not quite right. I looked through the window again.

I looked at the cars that had crashed into each other. Then I saw it! A creature that was getting up off the floor on the road. It was a human-shaped but had more buff and ugly like a parasite. One of the hands was deformed and it seemed to be broken, but weirdly it had become into a blade that looked like a scythe. Spikes were coming out from the back of the arm. One of its legs was deformed as well, it seemed broken, but the muscles that were bump like had grown on it to fix that. The face was also bloody and smashed, but the eyes looked the scariest they had this white, dead but alive colour. The zombie also seemed bigger then normal human, I looked at its big stomach it was huge. It was moving. It seemed that they still needed to breathe. It was not a sign of a zombie. It must be some kind of human Deviant.

The Deviant looked around as it saw a person inside the other car. It rushed towards the car and dragged the guy out from the car. Then it bit on the person's arm.

The guy opened his eyes and started screaming. He was being eaten alive. I don't know if I can help the guy. I still hadn't scouted the house so I don't know if someone from my family had turned in to one of those guys.

I sighed.

I am sorry pall, I can't save you…

I got myself together.

I had come to a conclusion at this point. The Apocalypse had really come.

I slowly and quietly went to my door, I opened it and looked if anyone was there. Well, I was the only one staying on the third floor, so it was doubtful for anything to be there, but still. I walked out silently and went on the stairs.

Squeak

FUCK

I stopped in my tracks.

God damn old staircase. I should have fixed it but I forgot. Sweat trickled down from the side of my forehead. I hopped the Deviants if there were any in the house had not heard me.

I realised I should have taken my crossbow yesterday. I guess things can't always go perfectly.

I walked downstairs and listened carefully, but didn't hear anything. I had guessed no one had awakened yet.

I went to my daughters' rooms' door and listened. It was quiet. I opened the door slowly and saw Sunlight with Jason on the bed. It seemed that last evening they were talking and then got knocked out before they could get inside of the bed.

They hadn't turned! Yes.

Wait! I realised I can't be too careful, maybe one of them had, but hadn't deformed or awakened yet.

I silently walked up to them and I pointed my sword at them.

I fucking hope they hadn't turned.

"Wake up." I said and waited, pointing my sword at them.

They didn't wake up.

With my left hand, I shook them as I held my sword with the right, the sword pointed right at their necks just in case.

"Mmmm, one more minute…" Sunlight spoke.

Tears almost came out from my eyes as I heard her speak. She hadn't turned.

I shook them again as they opened their eyes.

They looked at me then at the sword in shock.

"AAaaaa!" Sunlight shouted as Jason got her into his arms and backed away,

"Who the fuck are you?!" Jason shouted.

"Its Dudley, relax." I said as I put my sword down and took off my helmet.

They breathed out in relief and Sunlight looked at me in anger.

"What the fuck are you doing? Scaring me almost to death!" Sunlight shouted as she got up.

"The Apocalypse is here. I was just being careful." I said calmly and put my helmet back on.

"Look through the window." Thankfully their room was on the same side of the house.

She humped and walked to the window to look outside. She looked at a guy being eaten and the mutiples fires coming from the other side of the river.

She started backing away in shock.

"What's happening?" Sunlight said quietly. I could see it on her face she wanted to scream but she didn't dare to do it again. Thankfully I had put reinforced two-layered glass around the house. The walls were really thick as well. No matter how loud she shouted they wouldn't be able to hear. That was one of my preparations for the Apocalypse.

Jason also looked outisde as I could see the shock on his face then he moved even closer to the window to look. He couldn't believe his eyes.

"The Apocalypse is really here." I said calmly.

"It's not time to be shocked yet, we have to check on the grandchildren and hope none of them had turned." I said and grabbed the sword.

I was about to go outside Sunlights' room to check on them when I saw their doors open simultaneously. They slowly checked outside as they opened their doors with baseball bats in their hands.

I can't believe it. I thought about it. Yes, they heard Sunlight screaming and Jason shouting, that must have woken them up! Not only that they weren't even scared to face a zombie in case there was one. They were about to come out of their rooms to beat the shit out of the zombie!

I started laughing, I was happy and proud of my grandchildren.

"Grandpa?" Archi spoke in surprise as she looked at me.

She was actually able to tell who I was. What a good girl. Well, that was probably because of the crazy laugh that I have.

"We need to celebrate!" I shouted.

"None of us had become Deviants!"

I was so happy I took off my helmet and tears started rolling down my cheeks. I went to hug my grandson and my granddaughter.

After the hug, Archi and Telos looked at their mother and father who still had shocked and blank expression. They were completely used to my strange behaviour and were not fazed at all.

"Grandpa, what's up with them?" Telos asked.

I then came back to myself.

"Ah I forgot to tell you, the Apocalypse had really come. Look outside the window."

"Wah, seriously?" Archi said with wide eyes as she looked at me and then at the window. She grabbed Telos and dragged him to look outside.

Unlike their parents, they couldn't believe their eyes as they glued their faces to the window. They didn't seem to be scared at all.

"Holy shit it really did happen!" Archi couldn't take her eyes off the Aberrant.

"Oh my god, that's awesome!" Telos shouted as he jumped up to get a better view.

Seeing the kids acting like this, Sunlight and Jason sighed. They knew that I, the old geezer was right this time!

I wanted to laugh at them.

"I told you all it's going to happen! I laughed happily." I shouted in excitement.

Wait

Why am I happy?

I realised that the Apocalypse really had come, there was nothing to be happy about! Damn, humanity is finished!

Wait, let's not jump to conclusions. I knew that I was prepared but not the rest of humanity. I don't even know what percentage of humans had turned and if it's even a virus. The zombies were not natural either. They looked strong and smart.

I looked at the Deviant that had stopped chopping on the person and sat down on the ground. Its belly bulged beyond comparison.

Normal zombies would never do that. Besides, I checked my body once again and I had indeed become way stronger than before. My hearing, smell and eyesight had improved dramatically as well. I felt way beyond my prime when I was young.

"Quickly check your bodies, do you feel any different?" I asked the four.

"Why, what is it?" Jason asked in surprise.

"When I woke up I had become stronger and I don't need my lenses or glasses anymore." I said that as I started doing push-ups with one hand.

Telos eyes bulged, "Wow grandpa, I never knew you were this strong!"

I sneered.

I could do push-ups with one hand before as well, but not with this power!

I wasn't just preparing supplies for the Apocalypse I had prepared my body as well.

Telos started practising martial arts and checking his body. Archi, Sunlight and Jason too.

"Hmm, Grandpa I feel a little bit of a difference but not as significant as, you." Telos said.

The other three nodded in unison.

"Well, we all improved physically that can only mean one thing. The Universe wants us to kill the Deviants!" I said in excitement.
