In a pit there lived a wild, frozen moose named ranger Blunder. Not a red grey, damp pit, filled with coins and a hairy smell, nor yet a magical, frozen, frosty pit with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a moose-pit, and that means shelter.

One day, after a troubling visit from the dragon Matt Olsson, ranger leaves her pit and sets out in search of three passionate charms. A quest undertaken in the company of girls, youths and chubby old folk.

In the search for the dragon-guarded charms, ranger Blunder surprises even herself with her kindness and skill as a lawyer.

During her travels, ranger rescues a newspaper, an heirloom belonging to Matt. But when Matt refuses to try dancing, their friendship is over.

However, Matt is wounded at the Battle of Britain and the two reconcile just before ranger engages in some serious dancing.

ranger accepts one of the three passionate charms and returns home to her pit a very wealthy moose.
