10 Chapter 8

Chapter 8

***

The following days consisted of me heading out to work, the Shay would pick me up afterward.

I still couldn't get myself to tell Shay of what happened. I know she's been itching to know about it, but I couldn't find the exact words to say to not sound like a madwoman.

She got kicked out of school due to her absences, I told her I was sorry because it was kind of my fault. She didn't attend her class for two straight days to give me company and I felt bad about it. She kept on insisting that I wasn't my fault, it was her choice to look after me and she's been skipping class even before she found me. She was getting bullied in school and dealing with them infuriates her because she looks like a mother scolding little brats.

Lisa, on the other hand, is a bit off. One time I tagged along with Shay in her new school—she was asked to submit some files of her she said—I was alone that time because I told Shay that I would wait outside. Lisa came right in front of me, everything happened so fast I couldn't make a word out of my mouth. One second I was standing, the next I was on the ground, in the middle of the road. When I looked up, Lisa wasn't there.

There's been a couple of times Lisa tried to push me…I don't know, but I set my thoughts aside thinking Lisa was just tripping on her steps…

I looked up to see who just came in, it wasn't a surprise to see a group of guys. They've been visiting since the first day I have worked in the Diner. They were wearing a varsity jacket with the symbol of Shay's new school…hmm..that would make them her schoolmate, right?

I walked towards their booth, with my pen and pad in hand. "A strawberry milkshake for me." he had blonde hair and blue eyes.

"Dude! What are you, a girl?" the guy with dark brown hair and hazel eyes said.

"Stop it, Drake. I'm getting it for my mate. She'll kill me." he lowered his voice on the last part but I heard it loud and clear. I continued taking their orders even though I could feel their gaze at me.

"Your orders will be up in ten minutes. Just call me if you want to add." I gave them a half-smile and made my way to the counter. I gave their list and waited.

While waiting, I looked around and saw the smile plastered on the customers' faces. On the far right corner sat a family of four, besides their booth was a group of odd-looking people which I gave to my co-worker to take their order. On the second aisle on the left, the second booth from the right sat a man and a woman who came in minutes ago.

I said a quick 'enjoy your meal' to Drake's group—yeah I do first name basis so that I won't get confused with the customers, don't worry I only keep it in my head.

The couple that just walked in waved their hand, I walk towards their booth. Once in front of them, I said: "Hi, may I take your order?"

But instead of a response, I only got a cold stare from the woman. The man cleared his throat and told me their order. I could feel the woman's gaze but I disregarded to focus on my work.

I made my way to the counter. I was sweating. My heart was beating like I just took a run and was like oh how about taking orders at the diner?

I was pulled back in reality when I heard the bell chime.

I took the couple's order and headed to their booth. I placed it on their table, "Just call me if you need anything."

I was about to turn when the woman suddenly grabbed the knife. She swung it, but before it hit me, I dodged. It happened in slow motion, the noise awhile ago was like on mute.

As soon as I realized what was happening, the noise came back as a radio turned to max.

I was now holding her wrist, "I don't think it's used for playing" my voice sounded like another person.

I let go of her.

She smiled and apologized.

"You won't believe what happened."

"Why? Did something happen?"

She glanced before focusing back on the road.

I told her what happened and that I was fine because I wasn't hurt. I also told her about having customers with the same symbol of the school she transferred to. I noticed she went silent…maybe it wasn't a good idea to tell her that detail.

I shifted uncomfortably on my seat and leaned on the window. Shay has been waiting for my shift to end during the past days. She's been good to me. I don't know how I could repay her.

Shay broke the silence by telling me about her day in school.

During my stay with her, I noticed she doesn't go out with friends. She's always beside me. She treats me like I'm her family member, not that I'm complaining. It's nice to have someone treat you like your family.

"Thank you," I said, cutting her off. "I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude…I just want to say thank you, because you are always there for me. You treat me like I'm family and I'm so thankful for that."

She looked at me with tears.

"Does saying 'thank you' make you cry?"

She laughed heartily.

I couldn't stop thinking about my parents, however, not finding me would be the best. I thought.

The house was eerily quiet as we arrive. I stepped out of the car while Shay rounded and opened the trunk.

"Do you need help?" I asked, thinking she would need some. For some reason, I didn't want to enter alone.

She said, "Nope" popping the 'p' "You should go and turn the lights on. I'll be carrying these myself."

"Yeah…I should."

Something inside me is stirring making me uncomfortable.

Shay said, "Can you get me the Scissor? I left it on the coffee table." raising her voice so I could hear her. "…bloody hell..."
