6 CHAPTER THREE

Internship

I could hardly believe my luck. We were standing on the driveway of the great Hilton Enterprise. I turned to look at Erin who was smiling as usual before looking at the building again. Men and women dressed in suits were hurrying in. Not a single one of them had alighted a cab. They all had cars! Or maybe they alighted blocks away from the building just like Erin and I.

The few cars in the driveway, note the humility, were sleek looking and definitely expensive.

"Are you sure I got an internship here?" I asked for the umpteenth time.

"Yes stupid"

"Like seriously!? Regina Worth!?" She face palmed.

"Regina Ice Worth. Didn't give my boss a resume. I just put in a word for you"

"Pinch me,please"

"Lets make that a slap." I dodged her itching palm. "Lets go in. Ms Higgins would kill you if you're even a second late."

"Really?"

"I'm exaggerating,honey"

Few minutes later,"Am I really inside the elevator of Hilton Enterprise, the greatest and most influential company in the whole of London!?" The lady beside Erin held a laugh.

"Want a slap?"

"I'm good" She laughed. The elevator opened on the twenty sixth floor and on her lead,we left the lady to laugh to her fullest.

"Welcome, newbie." A guy on blue suit passed with a file. His blonde hair was tousled expertly. I didn't get to see his eyes.

"That's Jacob. He's a big flirt. Stay away from him." I nodded, too shocked to still believe I was in THE HILTON!

Erin opened the glass doors to a beehive. The occupants all paused as if being remote controlled, scrutinised me and then, like someone never came in,went back to their works. The office was open planned. Laptops were everywhere,my palms itched to touch one. My eyes scanned the environment. There were only three pot flowers around. An aquarium was at the far end of the room and a cola pay machine at the other. Erin led me to a desk.

"Good thing you're beside me. First time I was here,I was very nervous and these people...all of them, didn't really help out."

"How long have you being here?" I asked as she helped me with my controls and switches.

"Three months." She went to her desk and opened her own computer". "I had to win everyone's heart by not complaining, running errands and being diligent."

"Doesn't sound tough to me." She only smiled at me. "Am I not supposed to like sign some paper works or something?"

"Ms Higgins would call when she wants you." Everyone became quiet almost immediately. "Speak of the devil" She whispered.

"New intern, meet me by 11 o'clock. Don't miss a minute" She commanded as she walked to an adjoining personal room. Ms Higgins was a tall blonde. Trust me,her eyes were totally scary although the colour screamed cool. Every pair of eyes in the room turned to face me.

"You were supposed to reply" Erin nudged me with a laugh. Was I?

"Newbie,I need a coffee. Milky as you should be when I..." He slurped. It was the guy from outside the elevator. Now that I see it,his eyes were grey. But ew,that was disgusting. He winked at my crinkled face.

"This is an office,Jacob." I smiled at the voice until it said, "I need donuts"

"I need a cappuccino. Cafeteria is on the fifth floor, honey." I smiled at the lady. She was polite,at least.

"And you're getting no money" Erin smiled at me. What. The. Fuck!

At 11 o'clock,I missed three seconds though,I knocked on Ms Higgins door. After a small 'come in',I entered the room.

"Good morning ma" She didn't even look up from the files she was staring intently at. She began signing in a rush. Wouldn't she read the terms!? In an attempt to make conversation and make her notice me,I said "You have beautiful eyes ma'am" She looked up and almost immediately, looked back down shaking her head. Had I say something wrong?

My eyes then toured around her office. It was black, just like her soul. The wooden shelves were filled with trophies. I wondered what competition was held and who won among the team. Not even a single picture, mirror or flower was in her office. There was a painting though. The artist must had thought it beautiful to paint a person's puke. I chuckled at my imagination.

At exactly 11:26 am,she closed the files she had been working on and turned her attention to me. Her hands were crossed and placed on the table while her head whipped towards me with no smile.

"You'll sign no paperwork until you've gotten a job here fully. Your description is still as the rest of the team only a bit lighter. Take this time here under Hilton Enterprise as a trial period. Do well to keep your internship because if you lose it,I doubt any other company would want you. I wouldn't hesitate to let you off if you make a single mistake. You may leave. Tell Mr Grey I asked for him."

I smiled even though I was fuming inside. I seriously stood for twenty fucking six goddamn minutes to be told there would be no paperwork!? She was downright cruel.

"Oh and Miss Worth?"

"Yes ma" I turned around immediately.

"Never ever call my eyes beautiful again" I did say the wrong thing.

"Yes ma" I nodded.

"Remember to stay in line with your duties. Like I said,I wouldn't hesitate to let you off whenever you err even slightly."

"Yes ma"

"Never interrupt. Talk only when you're asked to." Her eyes bore into mine sternly. "And keep off the top floor". I nodded and left her office in shock. She was harsh, simply put. And what was in the top floor exactly? Some kind of non extinct dinosaurs being preserved? My curious buds itched for knowledge as I laughed at my imaginations again.

This internship was going to be tougher than I thought.
