8 CHAPTER FIVE

The Top Floor

The chicks got drunk and mama bird settled them in her nest safely. That's right. Before I returned from the washroom,I met them saying meaningless words and laughing at each other's lame jokes. I didn't know how much they consumed but they were totally screwed.

I kept thinking of the stranger even when I took a cab to the Enterprise the next day. It was almost 7:30 am. I was still trying really hard to get into Ms Higgins' good books, that's if she kept one.

"Hey newbie"

"It's Regina,Mr Jacob."

"Regina. Sounds hot. I prefer newbie though. You're new to my system although I'd love to explore. " I rolled my eyes. This guy sucked at flirting. He was using way too cheesy lines.

I inwardly wished for the elevator to get to the twenty sixth floor. I watched as it rolled up. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen. Fifteen.

"Are those space pants?" He threw at me soon.

"What!? No,I got these at Viv's. Its a really popular shopping line and..."

"Calm down, newbie. I only meant to say your bum is totally out of this world" His signature wink followed and fortunately, the elevator doors rolled open.

I quickly left hell to face a more tolerable one.

Rebecca, the chirpy blonde in our team sent me a thousand messages and I smile-glared at her a million times. I'm almost two weeks old here but they still treat me like I just came in yesterday!

Lunch came quickly but I didn't get a chance to eat. Erin bought me a toasted bagel but I was too occupied to eat and besides,Ms Higgins made it clear eating in the office was strictly disallowed. So,I fasted for the day.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, four o'clock came but while the others were let off,Ms Higgins decided to make use of her goddamn superiority. She made me stay to finish the chart I was working on. I looked hopefully at Erin but it turned out she was having a date.

And so,I stayed.

Two more hours, a bit of yawning and stretching here and there, a full page of curse words for Ms Higgins passed and I still wasn't done. A little editing for my essay was the only thing left. I yawned, deciding to do that little piece the next day. My desk phone rang.

"Miss Regina Worth. How can I help you?"

"It's Ms Higgins,Miss Worth. I forgot something in a rush. Could you help me deliver something?"

"Yes ma"

"Good. Go to my office. The Passcode is 3578. Go in,take the pink folder by the left side of the table. I want you to deliver it for me."

"Okay ma. Which office,ma'am?"

"The CEO's office." I gasped.

"But that's-"

"The top floor, yes of course. You're under my order,so you can go there just for tonight. And note, you're not to be seen by him. Avoid the cameras at all cost"

"But ma'am?"

"No buts,Miss Worth. He needs the file for a meeting tomorrow morning. And besides,my job is on... I really shouldn't be explaining to you, should I? It's an order!"

"Yes ma'am". I muttered with a small voice.

"One more thing. Office hours end by 4 o'clock. Never ever pick your phone after that time." She ended the call. Speak of being a total bitch!

I screamed inwardly.

***

The top floor was really beautiful. Despite the pounding in my chest during the elevator ride,I felt at peace immediately my legs touched the glassy tiles.

The decor screamed wealth. The wallpaper was a shimmering gold colour. Was this a kind of monuments keeping place? Animals statues of different sizes were scattered around the wall. It felt like a hotel. A secretary's open office was adjacent a door and I walked towards it. I was met with another hallway which I quickly entered. Just one door was on this part of the floor.

I scanned around for cameras as I finally remembered what the old witch had said. I was beginning to seriously hate the woman.

I pushed the door and it came open. I slipped in,holding the folder like a thief would hold a gun.

The office was dimly lit with just the desk lamp beaming brightly. The room had another feel to it. I looked around, pleased with the interior. I couldn't make much of how it looked because of the poor lightening but I could pick out the wall to be a pale blue colour. The colour always blended with my eyes. I loved it.

I made my way over to the mahogany desk to place the folder. I slipped kicking a side table and fell to my face. Two notes flew from the folder.

I picked them up quickly and put them back intact, not without seeing the words first though. Damn Ms Higgins! She had taken the first chart I made on managing the new product Hilton Enterprise produced. The lady had called it trash! Talk about more reasons to hate her!

And then,I heard footsteps and whistling coming from the other end of the office. I froze at a lost of what to do. Sure,I'm going to lose my job.

Rule was,'don't be seen by him'. Yet,he was not less than ten feet away from me. I screamed inwardly. Mr Hilton continued whistling a familiar tune. Turned out it was One Love by Bob Marley. I smiled at the imagination of the hard CEO listening to songs. I heard he was stern.

Marley had been a legend though. I loved his songs but was a bit pissed I didn't get to see him before his death. He was one of the few artist I fancied but he died at a very young age.

Stop being equivocal,Regina Worth! I screamed at myself. I had this habit of not facing my problems until they became worse and that was what I was doing now. Avoiding confrontation.

Gently,I stood and placed the folder on the desk. The CEO was facing the wall, still whistling with just a towel around his neck and shorts.

I placed a careful step back while watching him. I placed another, then another and another. Quickly,I turned and dashed for the door. A stupid side table at the other end of the couch was in the way and I tripped. Falling again,I cursed today. And beside what was it with the side tables!? I cried inwardly.

"Who's there?" The fine whistle turned into an annoyed shout before the lights went on.

"Who are you!?" The fine looking CEO asked in a shout as I quietly turned to face him.
