31 The Investigation

In a boardroom seated around a conference table were Michael Fu, Andrew Xiao, Mark Rong, and William Liu. They waited for Gordon to speak.

These men were his trusted confidants. They were loyal, hardworking, and thorough.

"Have there been any developments not the investigation?" Gordon asked the men.

It was actually Charlotte who had assigned this task to them when Gordon was drugged. However preliminary investigation revealed that the target was Charlotte, not him. The CCTV footage revealed that a man had prepared a drink with an added substance and given it to Charlotte. Gordon had drank it instead. He was hoping his men could say who and why.

"Yes, Boss. We're holding the scumbag at a warehouse in the city limits but he refuses to say who paid him." William said.

"I think it's time I pay him a visit." Gordon said. He and the other men headed toward his car.

"I won't say anything!" The man yelled out as Gordon and his men filled the room where he was being kept.

Gordon signaled some of his bodyguards who lifted the man into a standing position and held him.

"Do you understand that if you want to live, you will tell me what I want to know?" Gordon replied in a cold, uninterested voice.

"I want to know who paid you to harm my wife, and why. You have thirty seconds." Gordon said.

The remained silent. Gordon snapped his fingers.

A man stepped forward with a gun.

"Do it." Gordon commanded.

The gunman shot the man's knee.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" The man's screams echoed in the warehouse.

"Now, same questions, thirty seconds. If you don't tell me then your other leg will be shot." Gordon explained.

"Okay, okay! It was some rich girl. Lucy. I didn't get a surname. She said your wife had stolen you from her, that you had been engaged to her first. She paid me to make it look like your wife cheated on you so that you'd leave her." the prisoner yelled.

"Get him out of here." Gordon commanded.

"Wait, don't kill me! I told you what you wanted." The man cried.

"Take him to the hospital entrance and drop him out of the car." Gordon instructed.

Gordon had sent Charlotte out of his office on an errand while he took his next appointment, hoping to hide some of the reality from her.

His phone buzzed and he answered. Andrew's voice could clearly be heard.

"Miss Mu to see you, sir."

"Send her in." Gordon's brusque voice commanded.

Lucy Mu glided into the room, a haughty aura emanating from her body. She was dress in a short, tight dress that showed her cleavage.

"Gordon!" She cooed. "I knew one day you'd want to see me. What can I do for you?" She gave him a flirtatious smile, her question held an innuendo.

"You can get yourself out of this country. For starters!" Gordon's voice thundered.

"Wh—What?" She stuttered.

"I know everything about your little plan, and I'm telling you, if you don't get out of China and stay out, I'll forget the friendship our families have shared when I deal with you." Gordon's words came through gritted teeth.

Lucy's face went pale, but she stubbornly raised her head.

"What proof do you have?" She demanded.

Gordon silently played a recording on his phone where the hired man confessed his wrongdoing and who had hired him.

The strength drained from her and she stumbled into a chair.

"Gordon, I did it for us. Can't you see that you and I belong together? We are of the same class, we were raised together. We were once engaged. Why can't we be again?" Lucy pleaded.

"Three reasons. Number one, I have never been attracted to you. Number two, you tried to harm the woman I love. Number three, because of your little plan Charlotte and I are already married. We got our marriage license after I woke up from the drug." Gordon informed her.

"Y—you? He was supposed to drug her." Lucy was confused.

"I don't want Charlotte drinking alcohol so I drank her glass as well as mine. When Charlotte realized something wasn't right with me, she helped me get home safely. And then I made mad, passionate love to her." Gordon told Lucy, emphasis placed on the last sentence.

Lucy was horrified. Her plan had failed miserably and had actually driven Gordon into Charlotte's arms. Bitter tears rolled down her face.

"You have one week to leave the country for good. My people are monitoring you and will make sure you leave on time. Do not appear before me again." Gordon's words were deadly cold. There was no compassion in his eyes whatsoever.

Lucy ran from the room in tears, nearly knocking Charlotte down.

"What happened?" Charlotte asked in confusion.

"Lucy is the one who drugged me. I handed down her consequence for her offense." Gordon said simply.

"Why would Lucy drug you?" Charlotte was confused.

"It was meant for you, in order to put you in a compromising position. She thought I would leave you if you were involved in a scandal." Gordon said honestly.

"How wicked! What are you going to do to her that had her so upset?" Charlotte asked.

"She must leave China and not return."
