76 The Dream

Edward was in a meeting with a prospective client. They were discussing how his company would plan the client's event, showing examples, and talking about about pricing.

Edward's phone began to ring. He reached over to mute it. Several texts vibrated in succession and then the phone vibrated with another call.

"Do you need to take that?" The prospective client asked.

Edward glanced at the texts.

Gordon: Call me now!

Daniel: Emergency. Sara hit by car.

Andrew: My sister said Sara was in a bad accident picking up Bella.

Gordon: Call me. About Sara.

He was going to be sick. He jumped up and ran. All he could think was how stupid he'd been to hide his feelings for her. What if she died not knowing?

"Thirty year old female, hit and thrown by a car. Suspected acute subdural hematoma. Lost consciousness at the scene and hasn't regained it. Oh, and doctor, her blood type is rare. She has panda blood." A nurse informed the head neurosurgeon of the hospital.

"Get her to radiology stat. I want an MRI and EKG of her brain, and I want it yesterday, people! Also, someone check if we have enough of her blood type on hand. She lost plenty already. We most likely need to prep for a craniotomy. Get me an operating room ready." the neurosurgeon yelled.

The tests were quickly done and as the neurosurgeon stared at her MRI he groaned. Subdural hematoma, depressed skull fracture, diffuse axonal injury. Not pretty.

"Alright, get her to the operating room. Let's get this done."

——————————

Edward felt eerie standing outside the operating room with so many of his friends. This time it was for Sara. The woman he was in love with.

His cousin Daniel and Grace arrived with Bella. Bella was sobbing, worried about her mom. His heart clenched. She was too young to bare such a burden.

Anna and grandmother Stella took Bella and left.

A representative from the hospital came out and asked for Sara's family. Edward immediately spoke.

"I am."

Everyone turned to look at him, but no one contradicted him. Most of them understood how he felt about Sara.

"She has some pretty serious skull and brain trauma, which Doctor Yao will discus with you after surgery. I need your permission and payment." The man explained.

Edward signed his name and handed him a black credit card. The man's eyes widened. Who was the woman they were treating that her husband was so wealthy, the representative thought.

They settled in to wait. Several hours had passed. Edward was restless. His mind tortured him. What if she died, like Mia? What if she lived but was never the same and never understand his love? He fought tears, but still they came. He walked to the other end of the corridor to be alone with his tears, but Gordon soon joined him.

"I know I don't often have much to say, but I thank you for loving Sara. My brother would've been pleased she found a good man." Gordon comforted the best way he knew how.

"But what if she goes with James tonight? She may join him in the afterlife." Edward said solemnly. His wealth and connections were no match for the powers of life and death. He learned that with Mia. Gordon had no words. He just stood quietly with the man who loved his brother's bride.

"Hi, Gorgeous!" She heard the familiar voice she had longed for.

"James?" She asked softly.

"Yes, it's me." He said.

"I've missed you so much! Did I die?" Sara asked.

"Not yet. But you did an amazing job protecting our little girl. I'm so proud of you." He said.

"I haven't done the best job with her." Sara admitted.

"Yes you have! I'm just sorry I can't be there with you. But someone else is going to help you. Don't be afraid to let him in your heart, Sara. He's broken too, but he's who you and Bella need." James said.

"What do you mean?" She asked.

"I'll always be in your heart but there's room for Edward too." James told her.

"Edward? He doesn't love me. He's still in love with his wife." Sara said.

"He's conflicted. He doesn't understand there's room for both you in his heart. Be patient with him." James told her.

"You were the patient one, James. Not me." Sara laughed.

"You have to go back now, but I'm always with you." He told her.

"I love you!" Sara said as he seemed further and further away.

"I love you!" He called out. Slowly, the bright light faded and she overlooked her own body as the surgeon yelled.

"Suction! She's bleeding out! Hurry up so I can see the tear! Get the other bag of blood going before she crashes!" The surgeon barked orders. Sara looked on in fascination but she wasn't afraid.

"There, I closed it. We're almost done now." Relief could be heard in his voice. Slowly, Sara sank back into unconsciousness. Her last thought was that she certainly was having strange dreams today
