Chapter 1
1
'Fuck!'
Feeling his head spinning, Ken clutched his head to get some sense or stability.
'What's going on'
The dizzying sensation starts to recede and he looks around confused. He noticed through is blurry eyes the building that looks like a hut.
Everything is blurry and since he couldn't see, he closed his eyes and starts to remember the last thing that happened before he lost consciousness.
Body aching, he tries to remember the last thing that happened before he got here.
'I was pushed down the cliff by my brother.' His eyes flashed in anger as he starts to regain his memories.
His younger brother, the favorite prince of the empire pushed him down a cliff of death just because he's the trash. At the ruins of inheritance he visited with his brother. Being an unawakened in a Kingdom full of mages and warriors. Ken was a disappointment to the Kingdom and his family alike, although his father does not value him. His mother loves him and make sure he knows that she does from time to time.
As one of the best Warriors in the Kingdom, she made sure to train him in the art of swords, spear, arrow, knife, daggers, pretty much every weapon she could teach him
Although his talent was average at best, the dedication and time he put into training without rest, even with a weak unawakened body was staggering and his stamina was unmatched.
When most children awaken at 12-14 years of age. At 16, Ken was still unawakened. He lost all his friend at that same year as they all started to butter up to his brother and call him trash. Ken's brother, Jake, in his 12th birthday awakened with the power of lightening with high grade talent.
This sent Ken into more depression but there was still hope for him because although rare, cases of late awakening happens.
Jake grew from a kind person and changed into an arrogant prince. Every faction in the Kingdom were behind him as they all see his brother as trash.
The royal family challenge which happens every 50 years happened just 2 years after that. During these two years. The Queen died and everything changed for Ken.
Slaves were treated better than he was in the palace. Ken decided to join the army maybe the battlefield might stimulate his awakening. He spent a year and half in the army and became matured but his awakening was not happening even after being in near death situation many times.
"Tsk trash don't walk in front of me!" the voice echoed in the hollow tunnel that is occupied by two youths walking in armor and with weapons in their hand.
Jake the owner of the voice was seething because his brother that was popularly known as trash in the Kingdom was walking in front of him confidently just the same way he has been doing from the start and ignoring him too.
'how dare he? That unawakened trash ignore me! The crown prince. I'll show him. Hmph'
Lightening mana was coursing through his veins as he prepared to attack his brother but he remembered the last time he tried such.
Ken beat Jake up till half his bone were broken and that was the day he felt the biggest pain he ever felt. His father did nothing and told him that if he as an awakened cannot beat his unawakened brother then he does not deserve to be a prince. Jake who has always been doted on felt angry and instead of trying to get better, he decided to eliminate his brother lest the day he awakens come and overthrows him. Not that he was officially announced as the crown prince but he believes he is already the crown prince.
Thud!
His bum hit the ground when he stumbled on his brother's back.
"We are here" Ken's annoyingly gruff voice spoke out. That act alone enraged Jake but he still put his emotions in check because he knows his brother doesn't need any reason to end him in the ruins which as frustrating as it is to admit, he's capable of ending him swiftly.
Jake bypassed his brother and step forward walking towards the inheritance in shape of a floating box.
"Wait" Ken called out but Jake ignored him, charged lightening around his body and zoom forward with his fastest speed. If he had been a hair breath slower. He'd have been skewered by all sorts of arrows and spear traps coated with poison and that would have been the end of his life.
He turned to look at his brother and smirked at him even though his back was soaked with sweat.
Ken's indifferent face was the response he got which frustrated him further.
'I will kill him in the ruins one way or the other'.
Ken walked forward looking nonchalant but his every move and step was calculated to avoid triggering any of the trap. With deadly precision he passed through the trial with no trouble at all and his face remained indifferent even after that.
Jake scoffed, obviously angry at his brother and when he wasn't looking
A small smile appeared on Ken's face.
To him, it only seemed like Jake was throwing tantrum.
Only silence ensued as both of them continued on the path of the altar that held the floating box.
No more surprises or traps as brothers walk side by side to the inheritance.
The altar suddenly brighten up and a soul shaking screech assaulted brothers.
They had no defense against the unexpected attack and both lost consciousness.
The first to open his eyes was Jake. As an awakened, he has a stronger soul but his brother woke up only a few minutes after.
Ken looked around and they were just on a cliff, both of them. There's only black smoke below the ground surface and even a bit far away from the cliff, there was black smoke in the air but as if some kind of barrier was protecting them, they couldn't come close to them.
[Welcome To Erendale!]
A screen appeared in front of the brothers and they glanced at each other to confirm if they're seeing the same thing.
[There are two inheritance but only one will be allowed to leave alive]
A solemn frown on Ken's face as he could already guess what's going to happen.
[You will be scanned and a treasure will be allocated to you based on the quality of your soul.]
A red orb came down from the black sky and shed red light on the brothers.
They felt like they were naked, all their secrets out in the open.
[Complete]
After that prompt, two disc came down with great speed and hit both brothers, with a grunt they both went unconscious.
Ken opened his eyes but everything looks dark, he looked around but couldn't find anything of worth.
'where is this? I can't feel anything, not even my sense of touch.'
"This is the astral realm. Well your astral realm." A sweet voice answered him
"Who is there?" Ken asked looking around warily. He looked up and saw a young woman, everything about her is gray, even her eyes.
"Who are you?" He didn't drop his guard even when seeing the seemingly harmless woman above him.
"Hmmm What a strong soul." She started hovering around him like a scientist that found a rare specimen.
"Oh-ho, your soul is sealed. At least 90 percentage of it is sealed. It's a pretty strong seal too but it's nothing to me pfft…" she was just muttering and she waved her hand and multicolored light wash over Ken who was already in a defensive position even though he was sure he couldn't do much.
Expecting the attack, he tried to dodge but the light washed over him before he could move and the expected pain never came. Instead it felt like a burden was released from his heart and he felt at ease.
All of a sudden the light went off and Ken stared at the lady who was staring at him with shock.
"The seal is more complicated than I thought… anyways it will loosen up gradually but this kid's soul is no joke" she muttered but Ken couldn't hear what she was saying
"Ah welcome Ken, I'm the guardian of this altar. I will oversee your selection. Since before your entry your soul level was medium at best and that's what this altar has recorded, you will only be granted entry up to the third floor. Pick only two things. If you pick more than two your soul will be extinguished right on the spot" she said with a professional smile and he felt a chill run down his body.
"Of course I'll be here to watch and guide you so you will not waste your soul. Please head on to the stairs!"
Ken quickly skipped the first and second floor because something seems to be calling him from the third floor. It's a weird feeling but he has trusted his gut feeling and it has never failed him
The guardian watched in amusement as he kept skipping treasures kingdoms will fight for.
As he got to the third floor, he kept ignoring even the most alluring treasures, at this point it's starting to annoy the guardian but he suddenly stopped in front of a book. It's dusty and dirty and looks like a old piece of shit.
He tried to touch it when the guardian suddenly warned him.
"The moment you touch it, you've picked it. Are you sure that's what you want to pick"
From the beginning Ken hasn't said a word. He stared at the book but for some reason his heart was beating wildly and like a voice in his head screaming at him to take the book. Promising him it's the key to his awakening. It was very strong.
Without hesitation, he put his hand on the book and the book turned into a burst of light and shot at his head. He felt nothing
He looked at the guardian inquisitively and she just snickered
"All will be revealed when you're out of the trial."
Just when he thought he found what his guts started screaming again.
'what the fuck'
"Language please" she frowned at him.
'Wait she can hear my thoughts?
That's invasion of privacy!' he frowned back at her knowing fully well she can hear what he's thinking.
"Ahem ahem" she coughed with an embarrassed expression on her face. "You are in your soul form, there's no such thing as privacy ".
Ken clicked his tongue and picked the stone right behind the book he touched a while ago and he was expecting it to turn Into light but the purple stone remained a stone and shit at his chest with unbelievable speed knocking him out in the process.
The guardian watched with wide eyes because even with her authority as a guardian, the stone didn't reduce in speed at all and launched him across the wall and he ended up touching many treasures while he was unconscious before he faded out of the place. She couldn't even do anything with the speed that it all happened and that boy must have had like 20 treasures linked to his soul.
She smiled wryly before she waved her hand and the scattered place arranged itself back to order and then she also faded out of existence.
[Are you ready?]
That was the first thing Ken noticed when he woke up. Then he looked at his brother who had a spear in his hands. Lightening coursing through the elemental spear and his body.
[Only one would be allowed to leave, the other shall stay and serve. The two contestants shall fight and the winner will be allowed to leave.
Jumping off the cliff will lead to immediate death.
Punishment will be meted out if you kill your opponent.
Contestants can admit defeat and the fight will be stopped instantly.]
Then under that screen was another one
[Are you ready]
Ken looked at his brother. Although he was treated like trash, he never held any grudge against his brother. They have always been close before the awakening ceremony and he never went too far with his tantrums before he left for the military.
He wanted to admit say ready and then admit defeat but he underestimated the hatred in his brother's heart for him.
"Ready."
The screen changed to [Fight]
"I admi…" he coughed out blood before he could finish what he was going to say.
"Hehe" Jake laughed as he strolled over to his brother. The he kicked him in his face making him roll over and vomit more blood.
"W.. why?" his voice grew raspy and he struggled to say a word before vomiting blood again.
"Trash like you don't deserve to leave. You are a stain on the royal family. Father has asked me to wipe that stain off the family for good. You see He even gave me the poison I injected you with" horror was shown visibly and Ken's usually indifferent face when he realized his own family were the ones that planned his death.
"If I kill you here I won't get punished. See this talisman?" Jake brought out a talisman from his ring and dangled it in front of Ken.
Of course he knew what it was. It was the talisman of authority of this ruin.
When he saw that, he lost all hope of himself leaving the place alive and just stared at the black sky.
"You see at first I wasn't going to kill you when I found out that you will be here forever but the book you took. The art of Precision… Father specifically kept that book for me and since it's bound to your soul, you will have to die for me to have it. Say hi to mom for me bastard!"
'So this is how it ends huh' looked at his fourteen years old brother that was laughing like a maniac enjoying the hopeless look on his face.
'After many life and death situation on the battlefield, after all my training, all my hard work. I will be killed by my own family because I was unable to awaken even though my battle prowess is comparable to the strongest low rank awakener.'
A sigh left his mouth and he refused to give his brother the satisfaction of torturing him and killing him so he smiled at Jake.
Jake already knew what he was going to do from that smile and also smiled back
Boom!
Something exploded on Ken's chest and threw him to the edge of the cliff.
'ah so that's what it is. They carefully spread foreign lightening mana in my food, they must have been doing this for days to create a bomb in my chest'
Ken smiled wryly as he realized that survival in this place itself is futile.
His brother's cold face came into view and Jake kicked Ken into the black smoke under the cliff.
From then to the point of his death, his memory suddenly became hazy
[Poor Child] was the last thing he remembered before his death
