Chapter 1

POWER MIND

Chapter 1

In the absence of reality, there becomes infinity.

Robert was a fine young man, a senior in high school and an above average student. He was six feet tall with short black hair and blue eyes. He was very handsome. He was of German descent, the only child his parents had born before they were both killed in an auto accident. Robert was raised by his grandparents since the age of two and he loved them as his own parents.

At school, Robert was well liked by his teachers and fellow students. The girls liked him especially. They teased him about everything. How

he dressed. The way he walked. Whenever Robert made a comment in jest, the girls would always laugh and then smile. They all wanted him, but Robert could not be satisfied with just one. He wanted a little bit from each of them. Robert wanted perfection or he wasn't sure what he wanted. His feelings of love were complete but they demanded full devotion in return. His mind

was made up. He would settle for no less than perfection. He would wait for her, the girl of his dreams.

Today was Robert's day to buy groceries. He was in a hurry to get back

to see a movie so he jumped into his grandfather's car and immediately began backing out only to knock down and run over his ten speed bicycle. Robert

got out of the car and looked at his smashed bicycle and simply began laughing. He was laughing at himself.

It was now the weekend and Robert, without his bike, decided to walk downtown and buy a cassette tape or two. On his way,

he passed a nursing home. He was walking slowly now. Something was drawing his attention. Something or someone inside, but Robert could see no one and didn't understand as he continued

on his way.

Robert finally arrived at the music store and was trying to focus

his attention on some of the tapes he wanted to buy but that feeling

he had had at the nursing home remained the focus of his attention. He

finally bought a couple of tapes and began his journey home, taking

the same streets of passage on his return.

Robert was nearing the same nursing home now and that same feeling

was growing stronger as he approached. There was an

old man sitting in a wheelchair, out on the porch in front of the

building. He had long grey hair and his head was leaning forward as

though he were asleep. Robert stopped for a moment and looked at the

old man. The feeling Robert had felt, suddenly ceased. Robert was

confused for a moment or two and then he

just blew it off and continued on his way. He only got a few steps

when he heard "What is the meaning of love". The crippled old man had

spoken. Robert turned his head and then his whole body to face the old

man. There was no one else around. Robert stared at the old man as the

old man was now facing him. Robert replied: "Truth is the meaning of

love"

"You are correct. I welcome you as my brother. Here, sit

beside me".

Robert hesitated but his curiosity overcame him. He slowly climbed the steps to the porch, not taking his eyes off the

old man who was sitting there with a welcoming smile on his

face. Robert sat down beside him. The feeling he had had suddenly returned and was stronger than before. It gave Robert a feeling of belonging, a feeling of friendly attraction.

The old man had the face of experience. He looked mystical with his long grey hair and clean shaven face. There was a secretive look in his eyes. Robert's fascination was growing stronger. He no longer saw a wrinkled old man beside him. He felt the presence of divine providence.

The old man reached up and rubbed his forehead slowly.

He then turned to Robert and said: "Listen to me young man. I've been

in this nursing home for six months now. I've tried to get back on my

feet but I have failed and my health worsens by the day".

"Do you need medical attention?"

"No. Neither doctors nor medicine can help me now but I

have something to offer you and maybe you can help me in return. Here, take my hand." The old man reached out his hand, palm

up, toward Robert. Robert took his hand and noticed the intensity of heat his hand possessed. The old man looked at him and simply said "Now close your eyes." Robert did so and instantaneously, his mind began to flood with information. He understood all of his thoughts in the purest form. And then his mind became

void. There was infinity, if he wanted or serenity if he chose. Robert's concentration was no longer needed. He was completely free to indulge in any particular thought he might choose and the information he received from each particular thought that passed through his mind was enormous. More than

he had time to comprehend. In the knowing, there came ecstasy. Robert gripped his hand tighter, hoping never to turn loose.

It did not matter. The old man had delivered Robert's ability and he slowly released him to his original self. Robert was speechless as he opened his eyes. He just sat there and reminisced on what he had just experienced. He finally came about and turned to the old man and smiled. There was a glimmer in Robert's eyes. He released the old man's hand and started

to speak but the old man spoke first: "My name is Samuel."

He spoke with a complete sense of awareness. "I am unlike anyone you have ever met. I have the power of the mind."

"You took me to places in my mind that I have never seen or could

possibly imagine to exist. How is this possible?"

"It is the unlimited realm of infinity my son. I have the power

to dispose of reality and venture into the unknowns of infinity. It is there that I have learned many secrets and abilities.

I have many powers in the extension of my own mind."

Robert was deeply involved with Samuel. He was excited by his initial experience and the only thing he wanted now was more of the same.

An elderly nurse stepped out on the porch and spoke to

Samuel in a stern tone of voice. "Samuel, it's time for your medicine. You know when you're supposed to be at the nurse's station." Samuel rotated his chair toward the nurse and said:

"Samuel has already taken his medication and you are ready to

go back inside with no need to return." The nurse did as he

said, believing it as her own intention. Samuel rotated back

and slowly closed his eyes, seeming to meditate. After a few moments, he began to speak, speaking slowly and calmly. "You

have just witnessed the power of persuasion and you have experienced the power of inner sight. If you desire, you shall

have the power of the mind. With it, you can impose your own unlimited intellect, helping those you choose, including yourself You will be able to read the thoughts of those who come near

you and when you are in trouble, you can instill unlimited fear upon your foe. There is telepathy, but only with one. Your telepathy will

be with the only woman you love. The first

woman you make love to. She becomes your eternal partner in

love. The telepathy between you and her will only consist of feelings but there will be a deep and loving bond between you

and your lover. The two of you will be as one as your hearts

will beat together. She will be your only and complete desire. When you feel her calling, you will feel her direction and she will feel yours."

"Would my wife have these powers?"

"Only telepathy, but she will be touched deep inside

herself and she will be your guide as you will be hers no matter

how far you may wonder. She is the part of you that can never be

reached by yourself and you are the same to her."

"Where is your wife?" Samuel opened his eyes and lowered his head

in dismay.

"Somewhere to the north, I have not seen her for two years."

He spoke with a vengeance. "We were separated one day and she called me mentally, pleading for me to come. I could feel her fear. I traveled to her direction but she kept getting farther and farther away. If only she could have given me some information but I could only receive her feelings and only send my own feelings of disgust and hopelessness. It took me eight hours

to get a flight in her direction, but by the time I had arrived in Washington D.C., her direction had changed. I attempted to follow her again but someone had surely taken her captive and knew exactly how to evade me." Samuel raised his head and faced Robert, who was intently concerned.

"I never gave up trying to reach her until six months ago when I suffered a severe stroke. Two weeks ago, I finally got

out of bed and into this wheelchair. I don't think I will get any better than this, but something new has occurred. For the past three weeks, my wife, Linda, has been stationary. She has been calling me only from the north. She is calling me repeatedly,

and I don't know how I can bare it any longer. Wherever she

is, she is most surely guarded or confined. If I only had my health, I would go to her and annihilate her captors. But here

I am, in the conclusion of my life. And justly so, I take upon

the task that was taken upon me. I am passing on my secrets to you,

dear Robert. Do you accept?" Robert lowered his head and thought for a

moment. There was no disbelief in his mind or his conscience. He

slowly looked up and faced Samuel with a glare of intensity. "If I

receive the power, will I be able to help Linda?"

"Yes. You will hear her as I do."

"Then I surely accept for I believe that a man should not be blind to himself or to others ... I will do my best." Samuel put his hand on Robert's shoulder. "I am proud to have you as my successor ... When

you have reached the power of the mind, my powers will diminish as

they flow toward you. You will be

the Knight of light and darkness. You will become brave, valiant and dauntless. It is the way of those who see infinity and live. All of this is yours. Once you have acquired the power, you

will return to me and I will answer your questions and teach

you all that I know."

"The more information you give me, the more questions I have."

"In time, my son, in time." Another nurse appeared on the porch and walked toward Samuel, stopping in front of him. "It's time for bed Samuel. You know you're supposed to be in by eight." Samuel looked up at the nurse and then at Robert, both of them smiling. Samuel looked back at the nurse and said: "Samuel has already gone to bed and you want to go to your post." The nurse cooperated fully.

Samuel faced Robert and looked deep into his eyes. "There is much

for you to learn and time is growing short. Can you be here at eight

in the morning?"

"I have school, but I can be here." "I'll see you then."
