Chapter 1Prologue: How It All Began

Location: Unknown…

Time: Tuesday, November 1, 2025 at 17:58…

Dr. Bug was at his desk, wearing a white lab coat and finally finishing up the last of his paperwork. He had a long workday today. Hopefully, his hard work was finally going to pay off and he and the rest of the lab were one step away from mutating some animals and making them into a new breed of species. After that, he was going to take his portion of the money and work at a different lab. He couldn't really stand all the smaller minds that he had to work with. He reached into his side drawer and pulled out a tape recorder. After pressing the record button, he spoke the following words:

"Date: Tuesday, November 1st, 2025 at 5:58 P.M.. Our progress has increased drastically. The experiment itself of seven years has taken most of our money and brought us to financial instability for the most part, but we've come up with a few more combinations of the mutation serums, which I am hoping one of them will be successful. Hopefully, this will be the day my partner and I will have the new species come to fruition. I must check in on him now. I don't want to keep him waiting." He put the tape recorder in his pocket, got up out of his chair and exited his office.

He walked down the stairs with his lab coat waving behind him and entered the main laboratory, where dozens of other scientists were experimenting on other animals. Looking down, he could see one was injecting a yellowish chemical into a fox. Another was experimenting on a turtle. One other was experimenting on a salamander while having a candle near it after injecting a red chemical into its body. And still others were experimenting on other animals. Dr. Bug reached the bottom of the stairs and met up with the only other person he could tolerate in the whole facility, Dr. Joshua Longan.

"Ah, Dr. Bug," Joshua greeted, "Nice of you to join us again. We've come up with the biggest breakthrough of the whole experiment." "So it's going to work this time?" asked Dr. Bug, "I don't want a repeat of last year. I still have nightmares about that darn chihuahua you brought into here and made it go bouncing off the walls. That thing was rabid and infected seven hundred people. It took us a miracle to wipe out that kind of infection quickly, and yet we still had our buttocks' chewed out by the government over the whole experiment your boys ran. We nearly ran out of money because I had to pay them in interest with my hard-earned money to keep us running."

"Okay, I admit that was a bad experience," Joshua replied as he rubbed the back of his head, "But I assure you that this is going to be much better. We've come up with a brand new combination of the mutation serums, acquired new stem cells, and we're going to place them all into one test subject in a brand new set of measurements. We're just minutes away from going into the final procedure." "I question the logic in using every serum we've got," Dr. Bug said, "but so long as each one is at a reasonable quantity. Did you make sure the machine is still completely operational?"

"Yes, Doctor."

"Did you confiscate all electronic devices for this task? Cellphones, headphones, iPods, and whatnot?"

"Yes, sir."

Dr. Bug nodded and headed to the isolated room in the lab with Joshua, "Good. Let's begin."

Both scientists walked in and looked at what appeared to be a cat in a glass containment field, connected to diodes and wires. "A cat?" Dr. Bug asked as he raised an eyebrow, "We're doing the final procedure… on a cat? Really?? And look at the wires on it! I could've done a much better job than that!" "Blame Marcus later, sir," he said while pointing at another scientist outside of the room who was having a lunch break. Dr. Bug looked at him and rolled his eyes. Joshua smiled and got his clipboard ready. The doctor eyed the clipboard which had the calculations that Joshua had written. He glanced back at the subject and said, "So would you mind telling me why the wires, Joshua?" "Huh?" Joshua looked at Dr. Bug.

"The wires on the cat. Why does it have wires on its body?"

"Oh, well the serums we're giving to the specimen, as you know, are full of electrolytes, which as you know consists of energy within fluids," Joshua explained, "And… well, this is going to sound kind of ridiculous to you, but…" "But?" Dr. Bug pushed on.

"Well… I kind of got the idea of hastening the process from a coil gun video."

"You mean to tell me that you expect the electrolytes within the serums to travel through the subject's system quicker, thus hastening the mutation?"

"In summation."

"I have to tell you, Dr. Longan, you've had better theories than this. Electrolytes and mutation doesn't hasten in the way you're trying to make it happen. There's tons of cellular reconstruction to--"

"I know, I know," Joshua said, then tried something else to persuade his friend, "Okay, how about a bet, then?" "A bet?" the doctor raised an eyebrow. "I heard from another colleague that after this, you'll be taking your family to a two-week vacation to Paris," Joshua began to explain, "If this experiment is a success, you have to bring me and my family along with you." "That vacation seems to be pretty bleak, though," Dr. Bug pessimistically said because he knew that if this experiment was a failure, he wouldn't be getting the money from it for said vacation. "Hey, we did the math with this combination of serums," Joshua said, "We also measured out how many stem cells would be needed for this experiment. It should work. Now do we have a deal or not?" Joshua put his hand up for a hand shake. Dr. Bug looked at the hand, then at Joshua. With an exasperated sigh of irritation, he looked back at the test subject and said, "Well, we're going to be bankrupt soon, so I suppose we'll have to go out with one more try." "That's the spirit," Joshua said as they both shook on it, then told the rest, "Begin the procedure."

One scientist pulled a switch. Gas was released into the field and the cat was put to sleep. The scientist looked at Dr. Bug, who looked back, and nodded at him. "Subject is asleep, sir," she said. "Very good, Angela," replied Joshua, "Next sequence." A breathing mask was quickly placed on the cat by a scientist who stepped in wearing a white hazard suit. He walked out and then the field was filled with a suspending liquid. The cat floated in the middle of the field. "This is it. The moment of truth," Joshua said. Dr. Bug nodded and said, "Final sequence: Administer the serums and stem cells." Robotic arms were inserted into the field around the cat. On each arm was a syringe containing both the stem cells and the experimental serums for mutation. They watched the readings on the heart monitor as the needles pierced the flesh of the cat, injecting them, one by one. For a while, the readings were normal. People started writing in their clipboards quickly. "Well, well, Joshua," Dr. Bug said, "It looks like we'll pull through with this one after all."

Joshua smiled and looked on. Little did they know that behind them, one of the other scientists who were trying to keep the serums under control had a difficult time trying to keep the readings steady. The one tasked with monitoring vitals and administering a charge when needed to speed up the electrolytes and proteins within the serums accidentally pressed a wrong key on the keyboard in front of him. The result was an overdose on one of the serums, mixed with a discharge from the coils and electrodes - a serious mistake. Suddenly, when everything seemed fine, the cat started seizing frantically; the readings on the heart monitor started spiking and everyone got a look of worry on their faces.

"I knew this was too good to be true!" Dr. Bug said in irritation, "What's going on now?!" "It's my fault!" the one behind the keyboard shouted through the blaring alarm, "I hit the wrong key at the wrong time! I'm not sure I can stop it!" "Shut it down!!" Joshua shouted to him.

The scientist in charge of the vitals started working frantically to reverse what he did, but to no avail. The cat was seizing beyond rescue. After five minutes of frantic activity on the scientist's parts, the monitors finally let out a long, loud shrill. The subject had flat-lined in the tank.

All of the scientists were upset with this. Two of them hung their heads low. Marcus had looked so sick he couldn't finish the rest of his lunch. The one who pulled the switch for the gas just covered her mouth with her hand and a tear shed from her eye, knowing that she was probably going to get fired along with some of the other scientists. The one with the headphones just looked down guilty and tried to sneak his headphones back into his pocket. Nobody saw him do that. Joshua fell to his knees and looked at his deceased test subject in a combination of awe and disappointment. Dr. Bug turned, wiped his brow with his hand and frustratingly slammed his fist into the railing, which left a huge dent pointing downward.

"ARGH!!!" He exhaled in frustration as he slammed his fist on the railing, "We're ruined…" Joshua looked at the doctor, wanting to know what would happen now, as did the rest of the scientists who were with him. Looking down, he simply said, "We're through for the evening. Return home. All of you." All of them left except for Joshua, who decided to stay a little longer to go and pack his things from his office because he was pretty sure he was fired.

Dr. Bug kept contemplating on what to tell the government about their failure. Joshua walked back into the room with his stuff in a box. He laid them down on the table for a while and then approached Dr. Bug. He placed his hand on his shoulder. "I'm really sorry, Doctor," Joshua said, "Really, I am." The doctor just swatted Joshua's hand away in irritation. He reached out for his tape recorder and pressed the button.

"Date: Tuesday, November 1st, 2025 at 6:30 P.M.," he began, "The procedure was a failure. Mutation never showed, and the subject has ceased to show any signs of life. Probable cause is from Jeremiah, who once again had his blasted headphones in during the procedure. Note to self: Be sure to fire him and refuse his final paycheck. As for Longan…"

He paused, trying to figure out what to say next. And it was a good thing he paused when he did, because at the third second of his pause time, both of them heard the shrilling sound stop and heard a beep loud and clear. Both of them turned to face each other slowly as two more beeps were heard. Joshua looked at the heart monitor. The line was going up and down again. Satoshi widened his eyes and looked at the test subject in the tank. Satoshi spoke into the microphone of his recorder.

"Hold on a second…"

After that, he looked straight into the tank, placing his hand on the glass, and staring at the test subject. The cat slightly twitched its tail as the readings on the heart monitor grew stronger. "Come on," Satoshi quietly rooted, "Come on… you can do it…" Joshua looked back and forth at the cat and the readings. Eventually, a smile formed on his face. "Doctor," Joshua said, "the test subject is back. All life signs are restored. The mutation may be delayed, but it should work eventually."

Dr. Bug turned away, a bright smile on his face. "YES!!" He said under his breath as he brought both hands down on the railing he punched earlier. This was the best thing he'd ever experienced ever, as it was the biggest breakthrough for science. "We've done it," Dr. Bug said into the microphone, "At long last, we've done it; a successful procedure. The mutation may be delayed for a bit, but it definitely worked."

Joshua looked at the life readings again, but widened his eyes at what he was reading next.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," he said as he looked at the screen. These readings couldn't possibly be making sense. "What is it?" Dr. Bug asked as he turned to him. "These readings are shooting through the roof," Joshua responded, "I've never seen brain waves go this high! They just keep climbing!"

The doctor widened his eyes a bit and looked at the cat which was suspended in the tank.

"Now its vitals are spiking!" Joshua exclaimed, "I don't purport to be a genius, but vitals don't perk up this much! Not in anything! What is going on here?!" The doctor looked back at Joshua before returning his gaze back to the test subject.

It, for some reason, started to glow and change shape. Before either of them could continue watching, the alarm started going off and the lights started flickering. The computers got so glitched up that all the monitors ended up showing the blue screen of death or just flat out shut off. Numerous machines started malfunctioning and electricity started shooting everywhere. This was too much for Dr. Bug to stand.

"RUN!!" the doctor shouted, "CLEAR THE ROOM!!!!"

Dr. Bug and Joshua ran out of the room as fast as they could, and as soon as they reached the door, they both got out and were sent back by an explosion in the isolated test chamber. Glass broke and flew everywhere, lights from the ceiling dropped to the floor, the walls cracked, things were tossed around somehow, and sparks flew everywhere from every electrical machine and outlet there were in the two rooms. Joshua and Satoshi blacked out after that, as the whole facility powered down in a power outage.

After two hours of being unconscious, the doctor opened his eyes slowly and got up. He felt his forehead and felt that it was sore. He looked at his hand and found a bit of blood on it. He probably had a little cut on his forehead and was bleeding from it. He looked at his companion and shook his shoulder.

"Joshua…" he said as he shook him. "Dr. Longan, wake up." Joshua got up groggily. "Ugh…" he groaned in pain as he looked around. It was dark where they were at the time. The room was dim and was shining red in a few spots from the ceiling – probably signaling that the backup generators were currently being used. He looked at the ceiling, and some cords were hanging out.

"How… how long were we out?" He asked. Dr. Bug looked at his watch, "Two hours." "Seriously?" Joshua said, "That long? That was some explosion…" That sentence brought the doctor back to reality. He remembered what had happened and looked behind him. As soon as he looked, his eyes widened. "Joshua, look," he said as he pointed to the entrance of the isolated test chamber.

Joshua looked where he was pointing and widened his eyes as well. Both of them saw what looked like a pink glow emitting from the room. Both of them got up and followed the light straight to the source. Joshua had to move the automatic doors by force since there was no power in the facility, but managed to get both of them inside. The isolated test chamber was a huge mess. Many of the computer screens were blown out, and the controls were fried. There were broken pieces of glass - from both the screens and a coffee mug or two – littering the floor, along with papers, pens, a few clipboards and broken and cracked tablets. But all of that was merely proven to be inconsequential compared to what was seen next. Their eyes widened until they couldn't widen anymore, their mouths were hanging open slightly, and they both slowly approached the source of the glow.

Inside the tank, they found what looked to be the test subject, but it was completely different. The back legs were much bigger than what it had earlier. The front legs had turned into stubby arms with potentially tiny paws. The head resembled a feline, but the mouth was nowhere to be seen. The nose was covered in its new fur, which was a light pink, and it seemed to have bigger eyes. Its tail was longer, and had a fluffy end to it as well. The subject was suspended in a pink bubble that radiated energy, and the wires, diodes and oxygen mask were disconnected and in pieces.

Dr. Bug looked into the tank at the newly formed creature and then eyed the emergency mallet. He took it out and broke the tank open, spilling the liquids that suspended the creature in the tank all over the floor. Joshua went ahead, walked into the tank and got closer to it until he was an inch away from the pink bubble. As he did, the creature opened its eyelids to reveal its big, blue eyes. The bubble popped and the creature started floating in the air in front of both of them. The doctor watched and dropped his arms in surprise as he saw their little creation floating in the air like that.

"Incredible," Joshua said under his breath as he looked in awe and fascination. The creature looked up and tilted his head to the side cutely. It looked around and then hovered to the doctor who started smiling at their new creation. "Wow…" he said, "Look at you, little guy." "It's actually kind of cute," Joshua pointed out as he smiled slightly, "Well, cuter now than before."

The creature looked at him and gave off a small giggle as it floated back into Joshua, who held it in his arms lightly. "How is it able to float around like that?" Joshua asked Dr. Bug. He then looked around and saw other objects floating, such as a cellphone, a pen, and one of the many clipboards in the room, "And all that, for that matter."

Dr. Bug thought about it for a second and came up with a hypothesis. "Perhaps the serums not only changed its image," he started explaining, "but the combination, along with the subject's will to survive. It must've caused some sort of mutation that changed the cellular structure of its neural and cerebral network, thus enhancing its mind. Even more brainwaves are being emitted from its being as we speak. This must be the explanation on why it's being allowed to levitate."

"So it's able to levitate, and move things with its mind?" asked Joshua. Both were equally surprised when the new creature disappeared from Joshua's arms and then reappeared on the doctor's head. "Apparently, it can teleport as well," Dr. Bug added while chuckling as well.

"What should we call it?" Joshua asked. The creature floated to them and somewhat spoke its first sound cutely: "Mew." "Mew?" Dr. Bug asked, "Your name is Mew?" The creature nodded and giggled lightly as it floated back to Joshua. "Mew it is, then," Joshua said with a smile.

Mew looked around and flew out of the window to where the other animals had been left on the tables. The first table it got to was a little turtle. Mew tapped it on the shell lightly. As soon as it did, the turtle started to glow a bright light and changed its form. When it stopped glowing, it looked a lot different. It was a foot bigger, its body was blue, and had brown eyes. It stood up on its hind legs and made its first sounds.

"Squirtsquirt! Squirtle!"

Dr. Bug and Joshua looked in amazement. "Doctor, what's going on?" Joshua asked as soon as he saw the new little turtle. Mew went to another table and tapped a salamander. It shone a white light, and it looked different as well. It looked orange and looked more like a lizard than a salamander. Its tail gave off a little flame at the tip of its tail and looked around with its big blue eyes.

"Char! Char!"

Dr. Bug looked at Mew who was already going at another table, turning a snake purple and having a yellow rattle and yellow ring around its neck. "It must be transferring its genetic signature into the other animals and turning them into different creatures," he answered his colleague, "It's like their… evolving."

Mew got near a horseshoe crab in a tank and it changed into a dome shell, which started to climb out of the tank it was in."Kabu…to!" it exclaimed as it escaped the tank and started crawling around on the floor. Still another was changed into something like an egg with weird markings. It woke up and walked around, waving its stubby little arms in the air while walking cheerfully.

"Prrrii! Toge togeprrrii!"

The fox from earlier was changed from its light colored fur to a little bit of a darker brown and instead of one tail, five more were seen; it also had more curly hair at the top if its head. It sat down and looked around as it made its first noise

"Pix. Vulpix vulpix!"

And many others were changed from their former physical appearances to new creatures. Dr. Bug and Joshua looked around and saw all the new creatures that had been created and smiled as Mew floated near them. "This is incredible!" Joshua said in wonder, "We did it, Doctor! This is going to change the world forever!" "We're going to be rich," the doctor said, "And it's all thanks to our new little friend."

Mew's eyes then looked straight into Joshua's and before he knew it, Joshua's vision went white for an instant, then he looked around. To his surprise, he wasn't in the lab anymore. He was in a vast, lush green meadow, with mountains behind him, and surrounded by flowers and trees. Beyond the trees where he was were buildings – cities, he figured. But the biggest thing that caught his attention were the new creatures, and there were even more than he had seen in the lab. For a while, it seemed like all was well, until they all seemed to be frightened and seemed to flee from Joshua. Joshua wondered why they had run off so scared. Was it him? Were they scared of humans? Or were they running from a predator? Joshua soon got his answer when he noticed the area he was standing in become overshadowed by dark clouds, darker than naturally possible. And what he saw at that moment made him wish his question was never answered. Below from the center of the dark clouds, rising from an explosion from one of the mountains, he saw a dark figure with giant wings like that of a giant bat and crimson red eyes glowing from its head.

"Destroy, and wipe these despised humans off the face of this accursed world!!" he heard this dark figure roar.

All of a sudden, he saw hundreds of gas clouds and quadruped skeletons with horns like rams charge out across the earth. He saw that these creatures that spawned around the dark creature bit the newly made creatures and turned them into twisted, darker and more evil looking versions of their original forms. In their eyes, where he once saw contentment and light, were now filled with hatred and lust for destruction, just as the skeletal creatures were. The next thing that happened was most horrifying to him. The creatures that had been contaminated started slaughtering every man, woman and child that it came into contact with along with their contaminators. Joshua screamed as he saw one of them jump at him, and the vision was over. He dropped to his knees in a frightened heap and started breathing heavily.

When Joshua opened his eyes again, he hoped to be back in the lab. Instead, he saw he was standing on a high mountain, and looked around him. The sky was dark and cloudy, vast lands were on fire, and a battle was raging below him. All of the creatures, along with humans, started fighting against the dark creatures and the contaminated creatures. The dark creatures along with the contaminated struck, and the humans and clean creatures fought back, but their numbers were dwindling and they were growing tired. Joshua looked in fright and regret. "Are these… visions I'm seeing?" Joshua asked himself, "Is this going to happen? Is this the end of life on earth?" However, his thoughts were cut short as were his worries by what he had next seen and heard, giving him a shred of hope.

A ray of light pierced through the dark clouds and shone around the contaminated creatures, while a mystical tune was heard from the sky, like the sound of a flute playing. The melody was unlike any other he had heard; so soothing that it even put him at ease, despite what he was witnessing earlier. It was the type of music that could reach the soul when mere words failed and too wonderful for man's limited vocabulary to define. As the light grew, all the creatures turned back from their evil forms, while their contaminators dissolved without a trace as the light touched them. In the center of the light, he saw two bird-like creatures. A white, winged creature that had wings like a bird, but the body resembled a dragon. The other had its feathers vibrant with many colors, but was flaming and resembled a phoenix. The vision turned white, and from the blinding light, he saw a boy who had on a blue cloak and hood, standing there with a sword; he had to be no older than 11 or 12. His eyes were shown to be filled with a feeling so great he felt that nothing and no one could faze him. In his other hand, he held a strange red and white device which was estimated to be the size of his fist.

"… Today you face judgment for your crimes against our friends and against humanity," he heard him say, and a yellow mouse looking creature with a tail in the shape of a lightning bolt gave a battle cry from his shoulder.

He stood in front of the dark creature which gave off a low growl of hatred and contempt; his eyes shown a ghastly crimson glow and bared its teeth, which were jagged and stained with crimson liquid. The boy pointed his sword at the dark creature, looking as if he was ready to fight him. Everything flashed white, and the vision was over. He looked around and saw that everything was back to normal. He was still in the lab, Mew was still there, and he looked up at Dr. Bug, who had his eyes widened and his hands on his shoulders; apparently, he was trying to snap Joshua out of whatever was happening to him.

"What just happened, Joshua?" he asked, "It looked like you were seeing things." "I was," Joshua said as he got up, "It seems like Mew is also telepathic. He sent me a vision of the future. Some… dark force… something vile and gruesome… came out of nowhere and started slaughtering everyone. This is not something to take lightly. It appears Mew has been created for this specific purpose – to warn us of this event." Dr. Bug widened his eyes. "Wh-when will this happen?" "I don't know…" Joshua said.

"Is there no hope?"

"There is," Joshua answered, "Someone… a survivor – a boy will stand up to this creature and destroy it. He'll restore everyone, and bring back peace." "Will he really be able to pull something like that off?" he asked Joshua, "Are you implying that making these creatures was a mistake?! If this creature is as vile as you say it is, then I'd find it hard to believe that a mere boy can defeat something that horrifying. And if that's the case, then we've doomed our planet!"

Joshua got up, grabbed Satoshi by his collar and brought him to eye level by force, which was unexpected seeing that Joshua was never one to do that to anyone, let alone his boss. "Now you listen to me, Dr. Satoshi Bug," Joshua snapped as the doctor looked shocked in Joshua's eyes. "If someone were to lay his life on the line for Earth's sake, and I mean at least ONE , then there's no doubt in my mind that it'd be him to stop this thing. I will not rest until I see it all happen with my own eyes! Do you hear me?? I will make sure that I don't die until it all happens!!"

"Alright, alright," Satoshi said as he raised his hands in defense, "No need to get all melodramatic on me." "Sorry," Joshua apologized and let go of his boss, "This experience, though not unprecedented in general, was a bit too much for me to handle." "It's okay, Joshua," he reassured, "I understand. It must've been mind-boggling enough to know that your scientific method was actually valid, and now that vision."

"Yeah," Joshua said, then came to a realization, "Oh!" Dr. Bug raised his eyebrow. "That reminds me," Joshua began with a big smile on his face, "I won that bet. So now you have to take me and my family with you to Paris!" Satoshi nearly forgot how to stand after hearing that and inwardly wanted so badly to bang his head on the nearest wall as hard as he possibly could. But he quickly composed himself and gave a civil reply. "Yes, I suppose I did promise that, didn't I?" Satoshi looked at their pink levitating new friend and asked, "Do you want to come to Paris with us, Mew?" Mew looked at them both and cheerfully responded with a high pitched, "Mew!"

Centuries had passed since then, and the world changed. And Mew helped it all change. The new creatures multiplied and grew numerous. So numerous, in fact, that they had made the animals of today obsolete. The old creatures died off and the new ones took their place. Later on in life, the creatures that were newly formed were given a proper class name, called Pokémon. This story has been told to you to show you how it all truly started. Now, without further delay, you will hear the main story.
