(XVII) The Assessments 2/2

Isaac approached the man who stood with his arms crossed over his chest. He looked to be slightly older than Isaac but his hair was much shorter. He had a brown leather jacket with fur along the collar and jeans.

"Hey, I'm Isaac Firenze, I'm here to participate in my Physical Assessment. Are you the instructor?" Isaac asked extending his hand with a smile as he stared into the eyes of the taller, masculine man.

"Good evening, I'm Karl and that's correct. You have the option between three different scenarios. You can choose to be at an advantage, no advantage, or at a disadvantage." The man replied, his stern expression not faltering as he took Isaac's hand and firmly shook it.

"Could you explain further?"

"First, you can be at the advantage by having more Pokémon than me and all level 5. Second, no advantage, we both have the same number of Pokémon, and all are below level 10. Finally, a disadvantage, you will have fewer Pokémon than me, and all are level 10."

"Hmm..." Isaac said, shifting the weight onto his other leg as he grabbed his chin and began thinking, 'I'd be a fool to select the disadvantage, I've never battled a trained Pokémon before, and to have to battle 4? No chance, no matter how good the rewards are.'

"I'll take the advantage." He ultimately declared.

"Surprising. Considering how well you did on the written assessment I assumed you would have at least chosen to have a fair fight. Maybe I misjudged you..." Karl said with a disappointed look on his face.

Isaac sighed and rubbed the back of his head as he looked away feeling the embarrassment, "Fine... I'll take no advantage!" He grumbled wanting to take the easy way out.

"The battle will be a 3 on 3. To match the status of your three Pokémon, I've selected three to be a decent challenge and of equal caliber." Karl explained as he grabbed the three Pokéballs on the top of the cart and placed them onto his belt and tapped the device on his Pokétch.

Karl turned around and began talking to take his mark. Immediately the ground beneath the cart began lowing it to the subdivision and raised a moment later, the cart missing. He turned around which prompted Isaac to move to the other end of the field.

On a floor high in the PokéCenter, the trio who performed the written assessment were observing the field. Some bystanders bored noticed them and began gathering around the edges of the field to watch the battle.

Karl started by throwing his Pokéball first. It burst open and with a red laser, light brown, canine Pokémon appeared. Isaac pulled down his visor as he stared at the Lillipup.

After thinking for a moment, he threw his pokéball sending Elisabeth out, immediately Karl ordered Lillipup to use Howl. The puppy lifted his head and howled as a red aura surrounded his body.

"Stop Him, Elisabeth! Use Charm!" Isaac shouted as his Nidoran began shaking her body, hearts appeared in the iris of the Lillipup as the red aura disappeared.

"Tch!" Karl clicked his tongue, "Use Work Up Lillipup!"

The small doggo shook his head and began running around in a circle before jumping up and down as the aura reappeared.

"Quit playing games!" Isaac shouted at Karl, "Elisabeth, once more!" She nodded and shook once more captivating the eyes of Lillipup.

"Quick, use Scratch!" Isaac followed up. Elisabeth began running toward the Lillipup as white energy gathered around her forelegs.

"Snarl and dodge Lillipup!" Karl ordered.

"Arf!" Lillipup barked as he began baring his teeth and growling loudly as the Nidoran charged toward him. He snarled loudly as he jumped out of the way.

Elisabeth's attack missed and she took damage from the attack, 'Thankfully Lillipup has a terrible Special otherwise that could have been worse, I'll need to take him out before he can use too many of those...' Isaac thought to himself, "Quick! Get in close and use another Scratch!"

"Dodge and use Work Up!" Karl countered as Nidoran charged once more, Lillipup jumped out of the way prematurely and began charging Work Up but Elisabeth quickly closed the gap as the white energy gathered in her tiny claws as she scratched diagonally with both arms knocking the puppy onto his side.

"Great job Elisabeth!" Isaac cheered, 'I wish she had more abilities to work with, maybe I should switch her out...' He thought before pulling out his pokéball, "That's enough for now, get some rest!" He said returning her to rest.

"Thanks for the breather! Lillipup use Howl!" Karl shouted as Lillipup howled into the air as the red aura returned around his little body.

"Come on out Ava!" Isaac shouted throwing the pokéball into the air as the red laser revealed the small energetic Eevee.

"Quick! Get in there and use Double Kick!" Isaac shouted!

"Vee!!" She replied dashing back and forth as she quickly approached the Lillipup.

"Lillipup! Dodge and use Yawn!" Karl quickly shouted surprised by the speed of the little Eevee.

Lillipup began jumping around the field but Ava wasn't giving up her pursuit, he stopped trying to avoid and began charging the white energy into his throat.

Ava jumped toward Lillipup flipping in the air as her hindlegs rapidly kicked Lillipup who was sent flying after a cloud splashed against Ava's face.

"That was amazing Ava!" Isaac shouted jumping in the air.

"Vee..." She replied drowsily.

"Shake it off Ava! You can do this!"

Karl returned the Lillipup to his pokéball and rubbed it affectionately, "You did a good job, rest well..." He whispered, throwing out his next Pokéball, revealing a pink, bipedal, bulldog-like Pokémon with blue polka dots covering its body.

Snubbull roared as Ava cowered due to the Intimidate, a blue aura revealing her reduced attack.

"Ava! Come back!" Isaac ordered needing to remove Ava from the field due to the Intimidate and Yawn, he couldn't afford to be down a pokémon. He returned her to her pokéball and threw his last one, the red laser revealing Artorious.

"Artorious! Quick use Poison Sting!"

"Snubbull! Use Scary Face!"

Both trainers shouted at the same time. Nidoran charged energy into his horn as he charged toward the Snubbull who was making obscene faces using her hands.

Artorious had covered most of the distance but once he saw the faces made by Snubbull, he slowed down drastically, but it was too late for her to avoid the attack as he rammed his horn against her stomach knocking her onto her back as she gripped her waist as the wound was poisoned.

"Damn the luck of this boy..." Karl muttered to himself before shouting his command, "Snubbull! Use Ice Fang!"

"Great job Artorious! Quick use Sucker Punch and follow up with a Venom Drench!" Isaac shouted as the Nidoran jumped into the air as a shadow punched Snubbull, who brushed off the attack.

Artorious braced his body as purple energy gathered around his stomach, while Snubbul got up and shook her head before she charged closer with a cool breeze trailing behind her as her canines were frozen solid. She leapt into the air opening her mouth wide to chomp hard onto him.

Right before she slammed her jaw shut, a poisonous stream was shot out of Artorious' mouth covering her and drastically reducing the damage from the attack he suffered.

"Clamp down and follow up with Bite!" Karl ordered as Snubbul opened her mouth as her teeth became shrouded in shadows.

"Finish her off with Poison Sting!" Isaac shouted as his Nidoran shrugged off the bite from Snubbul and hit her once more with his horn, knocking her through the air and onto her back unconscious.

Karl returned her to her pokéball and nodded, "You did for going against a mismatched type." He whispered to her returning her to his belt and throwing his last pokéball.

Out came a small, pale-green, quadrupedal Pokémon with dark-green buds around her neck. On her head was a large leaf and had big red eyes.
