It's 2019, 10 hours left before the start of a new year, a new decade that could change how people act just like any other year. My name is Dave Vegas a 17-year-old boy living in a town far away, north pass, known for its amazing grades in north pass high and famous football players. Its 10 miles away from our worst town. Long dale, the worst people you can mess with. Yes, they are rich for their drug business and sex toys. But they are the worst. Their parents being gangbangers and rapists, killers, and drug dealers. More like satan's city. When I said that we were far away. I meant by our lifestyle, very old schooled yet modern enough to be with the world. My family being the Vegas own one of the most popular online news company in north pass, me being the second child am a disappointment to them. They never liked me for the trouble I did.my brother Evan Vegas is not really with us, he isn't dead he's just studying abroad. My dad Jacob and mom Alaina are one of the worst parents you might wanna be with at times of crisis cause when they see drama, they are talking and posting all day long with no mercy to anyone. I go to north pass with my 3 close friends, Jessica albas, hope Dovano, and my gay best friend Kal albas, twin brother of Jessica albas. They don't get along a-lot as their parents got split and twins choose their separate way of life, one wants to be a clothing designer and the other a professional dancer shortly.
"y'all are ready for the dance," I asked.
"of course, I got my dress yesterday and guess who asked me out?" Said Jessica.
"who?" We all got closer.
" Mark Edelman," said Jessica, me trying to smile as much as I can trying not to ruin my friend's first-ever relationship. why you may ask? well first off the guy she's going with is my worst enemy since kindergarten. We always were fighting for the least problems, we were competing for who gets good grades and who has more awards, all of a sudden when he started hitting puberty he changed, got packs and all the girls for him, going from an intelligent nerd into a Zac Efron with the brain of Albert Einstein. He got grades and awards better than I did, went to the championship, and even got a scholarship to Harvard University. Above all that, he plays football for the north pass high.
"I'm happy for you," I said with a smile on my face while screaming for help in my head.
While Jessica, hope, and Kal gossip about the tea of the week.
"Jason is going out with Daniel, can you believe it," said Kal. I sipped my coffee, "It looks like someone is jealous?".
"I'm not, I'm just not ready," said Kal while pressing himself onto my bed.
"you said that 3 years ago when are you going to make your first move to Jason, you always loved him" I replied while handing out cookies from my mom's room.
"These taste amazing, and yeah you always talk about him but never make your move," said hope while trying to get a glimpse of my new neighbor.
"ooh hell no" I stopped with fear.
"dave what's wrong ?" Asked Kal, he turns around and looks at what he's staring at and looks at his sister sleeping
"what's wrong?" Said hope while stalking.
"she's doing it again" I replied closing the box of cookies and leaving my room. Kal grabs hope and leaves to lock my room. The reason you might ask if she sleeps there is no way in hell anyone can wake her ass up. All you going to see is a hungry monster coming right at you and mind me saying a 5 foot 8 inches girl who goes boxing every week.
"what's wrong?" Asked Alaina, my mom, " do you wanna wake her?" Asked Kal.
My mom's brows went all the way up," oh no boo I have some things to do" she replied as she left quietly trying not to wake the beast up.
"so what are we going to do? We have 2 hours left for 2020 to come" I asked hope and Kal.
" Circle of fire?" Said hope under her breath. I grab the lighter from my dad's office room while hope and Kal get snacks from the pantry. I open my door slowly trying not to wake jess up. I look through my window that shows my neighbors and sees a red-headed girl, tall and beautiful. Red painted nails and gorgeous blue eyes, She had the body of a model.
"DAVE" shouted Kal from downstairs, I run down to see what's up.
"you are out of chocolate chip cookies," said hope while looking out the window still trying to get a glimpse of our new neighbors.
" It's a girl, there is no new boy," I said, hope looks at me and rolls her eyes. Kal giggles, they both carry on and we all head to the backyard, a bit away from our parents so we can celebrate on our own. We do this celebration in the woods away from our parents, we get a paper and write something we hate so it can leave with the year we're leaving. My friend Jonathan told me about this tradition when we were in 5th grade. He sadly passed away 2 years ago after someone crashed him while illegally driving at night. It was his 15th birthday and was the last.
"Let us start," said Hope.
"what about jess? You know she's going to freak out and get angry" said Kal.
" Do you wanna wake the monster? Your choice" I replied.
We started writing everything down, what we hated, what we want for our year to have, and what is it that we need at this time. For me its always the same, I hated losing or failing, love is what I need and cant get cause I'm a person with issues and cause their always scared of my parents. But what I need is time, a lot of it to be able to spend as much time with everyone.
"okay 5 minutes left guys" I stood up grabbing both their hands, we start hearing the fireworks from across the street and hear everyone cheer. We throw the papers and hug each other and start celebrating, of course, a celebration wouldn't start without songs.
"Hey Siri, play I like it like that by Cardi B," said Kal.
We all start dancing around, we slowly started taking our clothes off and jumping into the river, it was cold and refreshing but still the best feeling of having fun. Splashes and dancing, snacking on our favorite snack. Just like usual a night never to be forgotten.
"so, what do you think of our new year," I asked. Kal lying down on the ground covered with Hope.
"I don't know, I kinda wish I had a normal family, where I would wake up with both my parents with me, smiling and talking about others like a normal family would do, a family where I can just be happy instead of taking care of my alcoholic mom," said Kal while glazing at the stars.
"why don't you just go with your dad?" Asked Hope.
"you know I can't just leave her," said Kal while crossing his legs and putting his back on the tree next to the fire, " she would be destroyed, literally destroyed. She drinks a-lot and without me, she would just be dead, she can't even take care of her self and that's a reason dad left her. He knew he couldn't just live with her".
"well" I put my hand around him, Hope gets closer and we look at each other, " even though Jessica isn't here, we're all a family together, no matter what," I said comforting Kal.
We start dancing again until we heard the sound of something break, I lower the sound and start looking around.
"I'm going to check someone, just a minute" I took the flashlight from my phone and start looking around.
"Dave, you good?" Asked Kal.
"Dave you're scaring me," said Hope holding Kal real tight.
I look around and see nothing, " sorry guys just heard something, it's all good nothing here to see", I turn around seeing Kal and Hope turn the sound up all the way and start dancing like no one is watching at all.
"guys its 2 am," said Hope, "shit my mom and dad are going to kill me, shit shit shit" Hope starts wearing her clothes and head home " by you guys," she said as she leaves running from fear.
"aren't you going to go?" I asked Kal while wearing my pants.
"I don't know, to be honest, I'm just going to take some time here, don't worry you can leave," said Kal lying his head on the tree with some piano music on the speaker.
"okay well, I'm going and if you need anything you know how to even and your sister is all with me," I said giving him a huge hug.
I start walking away towards my house, good thing my house has the view of the woods and can see our spot and Kal. I head to the guest room and put my head on the pillow thinking of my brother Evan, missing him a-lot, worst of all this is he never asks about me, even when he's home he never liked being with me. Always said I was a mistake to mom and dad and that I'm the reason they fight a-lot. I close my eyes hoping all this can just be better this year.
