What Paullulus did he thought he did out of love. He loved Dawn he did but he was selfish like most of us are now of days, we don't know how to wait or listen. Dawn would have worked those four thousand years two times over if it meant she would be with Paullulus David with no problems.

Paul came to Dawn and begged her one last time to help use her powers so that they could be together but Dawn said she would work the time so they could be together safely, they were immortal, what's four thousand years?

That's when he stabbed her and in her weaker state (you have no form just a orb of energy when weakened) you can absorb it to make yourself more powerful or you can put in a human body instead of a human soul. He carried her to the body of an infant child on earth that died not even seconds before and puts Dawn's soul into that body. Each time he make her fall in love with him over and over again but before Dawn could have a child she would come to untimely demise. Each time forgetting a little more and growing to dislike the man who claimed to love her... He grew angry and bitter and she would come to see his true colors. Paullulus found a loop hole every a hundred years or so. he would put her soul into an animal and he would turn into that animal. They would have offsprings but with the mental capability of that kind of animal. So the animal was special but not a threat like a human could be. It would remind Dawn of her past life over and over again but almost always she died minutes after remembering. This cruel existence was killing the poor girl.

But he needed a human child to break the curse. So he was willing to break her if it meant getting out of the curse they were in.

Dawn was angry and bitter and darkness started to grow in her heart and Devil sense this and came to her.
