He nodded at her and turned to talk to Ray.

She walked into the office of the station. She sank down into the chair there. It looked like it had oil and grease all over it but that didn’t matter. She was off her feet. 23

There was an old payphone hanging on the wall. She rolled the chair closer, slipped a few coins into it, and dialed Maggie’s home number.”

“Hello?”

“Maggie, it’s me.”

“Cameron? Where are you? Are you all right?” There were men’s voices in the background. They sounded excited. “We thought you were dead.”

“Dead tired, maybe,” she replied. “I’m still alive.”

“Where are you?” Maggie’s excitement could be felt through the phone.

“I’m at a gas station on Route 9 in Halltown, north of Ranson, West Virginia.” She was surprised she remembered that in her condition.
