An Old Fool's Fate

*Pat* *Pat* *Pat*

In a dark, musky room, the sounds of footsteps echoed. The rhythmic steps eventually coming to a stop in front of a cell that has been fortified with hundreds of runes.

Sitting in the corner of the cell is an old man, malnourished and chained, but still holding a blazing passion in his eyes. When he looked up at the new arrival he gave a him a proud smile that seemed to show an unending confidence.

"Well, good morning Sir Richard. I trust your new accommodations are doing you well?" The new arrival said as he looked down at Sir Richard with mocking eyes.

"Hahaha! I'm doing just fine Little Tommy-" Sir Richard began, but was interrupted by an angry and powerful roar.

"DO NOT CALL ME THAT YOU OLD FOOL" The new arrival named Little Tommy screamed.

"Ha ha ha! Still gets you even after all these years! I guess some things really don't change..." Sir Richard began reminiscing.

"And others change all too much you old fool. From the top court wizard to nothing but a lowly prisoner awaiting his public execution." Stated Little Tommy with an emotionless tone.

"That is true, but at the same time change is important. Just as I shut my door, another opened for that person. If an old fool like me can help save this world by sacrificing my life, then so be it." Sir Richard, the court wizard who summoned Roy to this world proudly declared.

"Just what in the hell did you see that drove you to this point?! To use not the power of the national treasure, but the treasure itself? Do you not understand the importance of such an item? It is not only of great cultural importance, but is vital to our understanding of souls and the process of reincarnation!" Little Tommy screamed, fury seething into every fiber of his being.

Sir Richard just stared at his old apprentice, seconds passing in silence. Finally he opened his mouth and spoke, what he said shook the new top court wizard to his very core.

"I have discovered life on other worlds Little Tommy, and they are hostile." After speaking this earth shattering sentence, Sir Richard closed his eyes and ended their conversation.

Roy slowly began to open his eyes as he heard the faint humming of birds. Sitting up and stretching, while taking in the morning air.

*Yawn* 'This isn't so bad now that I can move around easier. It even feels like a really pleasant morning!.' Getting up with a nice amount of serotonin, Roy felt upbeat today. As he was munching on his leftover critters for breakfast, he decided to check out his stats.

'What! Did I get this when I was asleep? Maybe the clay bucket finished drying out? But that doesn't make sense, I remember doing clay projects in art class. Back then the teacher said that without baking it, clay can take 1-2 days to dry. I need to go check it as soon as possible...'

After slowly standing up, Roy made his way over to the river where he left his cup to cure. On the way he read up info on his new skill as well as what jobs are and what they do.

'Interesting, though if I need a hundred levels to get a new job, then I can't possibly take a crafting job that will give little to no stat buffs as my first. I need to save that slot until I can get myself a combat oriented one. Maybe if I level up this skill I can make some primitive stone tools later. Just need some flint and a rock for flintknapping. Probably gonna be a pain in the ass though, since I have no idea how to properly do it.'

As Roy was planning out his next steps in his head he arrived at the river. A little ways down the stream he saw the boulder that he left his cup on. When he arrived at it he could see that it had indeed yet to cure so he was very confused as to why he managed to unlock this skill.

'Is it maybe the makeshift bed I made last night? It can't be... right? It was just some leaves and soft dirt. Hmm, I guess I'll try appraising this cup I made.'

'Neat.' Roy said looking amused.

After finishing his inspection, Roy went to the river to drink some water.

'Ahh, never get tired of that refreshing cold feeling hitting the back of my throat.' Roy happily gulped down a few handfuls of water, then went over to find more bugs to kill.

Notes:

An even weaker existence than one of the weakest beings on this planet.

Almost no lesser creatures survive in the wild, since they cannot escape their predators that live in close proximity.

'Well damn. This little guy and I seem to have a lot in common huh? Maybe I'll try and keep it as a pet. Might be nice to have some company so I can avoid a Wilson situation.'

"Buhihi"

After collecting the rolled up critter, Roy walked over and set it in the still drying cup so it couldn't get away and went to collect his food. After sticking it all on a leaf and setting it next to his cup, Roy went to watch the other roly-polies to see what they eat.

Finally after about an hour he found one that was munching on a dead blade of grass. As a test he picked a living piece of grass and the one the roly-poly was eating and set them in another pile of roly-polies he found under another rock.

Most of them went for the decaying grass blade, so Roy decided to go pick a bunch of dying or decomposing plants and break them apart for his new pet. After breaking them into smaller pieces he tossed them in a pile.

After finishing the manual labor, he decided to have some fun and make a little habitat for his new pet out of clay. He collected around twice as much of the stinky clay as he did for the cup, since he wasn't planning on moving it. He made a small platform, then stuck some small sticks in it for support. After that he started building the walls up and finally made a little hole inside for water.

"Whew" 'That was fun! Guess I should get some water to fill the hole.' Roy thought to himself as he walked over to the river and cupped his hands. Carefully he brought the water to the habitat and let it seep between his palms into the indent. After that he added the dead or decaying plants on the floor of the habitat, then lastly moved his new pet to it.

Wiping the sweat off his forehead Roy pleasingly thought, 'Job well done!'
