Chapter 14: Daily Life in the Navy I

Boom!

"Rise and shine, you lazy recruits!" The resounding crash of the door filled the room as Officer Dante, adorned in a navy uniform and a white coach's robe, stormed in. His face bore the marks of a seasoned soldier, rough and scarred.

Once a skilled sailor, he had chosen to step away from the front lines and now focused on training new recruits.

Taking in the scene, Officer Dante noticed Isaac poised defensively on his bed, while his roommate sat calmly on the floor, gripping his sword. In truth, Isaac had been jolted awake by the sudden clamor, his instincts kicking in.

"It's good to see you're awake. Get your bed made and put on your uniform. We're heading to Section G for training. You have thirty minutes. Be late, and you'll face severe punishment." With those words, the officer exited the room, a peculiar smile lingering on his face.

He had personally come to assess the talents of these recruits, and their reactions had pleased him greatly. One of them remained composed even as the door was kicked open, demonstrating a commendable composure in unexpected situations.

The other swiftly leapt into a defensive stance upon waking, displaying excellent reflexes and training.

After the officer departed, Isaac regained his composure and stepped down from his bed. He proceeded to open the window, only to discover that the sun had yet to rise. He felt a deep sense of annoyance regarding the early wake-up call.

It wasn't that he minded rising early, but lately he had been deprived of sufficient rest, and on the rare day that he managed to sleep in, they promptly disrupted his slumber.

"You seem a little lazy and not fond of early mornings," a childish voice sounded from the side of the room. Isaac turned to find Hattori sitting on the floor, calmly sharpening his sword. It appeared that he had awoken earlier and already tidied his bed.

"Oh, I completely forgot about that guy. What a nuisance. Why did they assign this idiot as my roommate? Are they trying to create some kind of competition between us just because we're both talented?" Isaac muttered to himself, feeling surprised that he would have to share a room with the gifted kid he encountered during the auditions.

However, he didn't really care about him. While Hattori may be talented, Isaac believed that talent alone is not enough in this world. Anyone can become strong through hard work, so even talented individuals need to put in the effort.

"It's rude to ignore someone when they're speaking to you. I didn't expect you to be so arrogant. Talented people like you always think you're the best," Hattori retorted before storming out of the room, annoyed by Isaac's dismissive attitude.

He considered Isaac as a rival but despised being treated as insignificant and ignored.

"What's wrong with this guy? Should I teach him a lesson so he knows his place?" Isaac muttered to himself, growing increasingly irritated by Hattori's behavior.

While he didn't pay much attention to him initially, if Hattori continued to annoy him, Isaac didn't mind putting him in his place.

After tidying up his bed and freshening up, Isaac left the cadet section and made his way to the workers' section to change into his uniform.

The uniform was plain and simple, consisting of a white shirt adorned with the navy symbol on the back, blue pants with a white stripe, and a blue baseball cap with the word "Navy" embroidered on it.

The Navy headquarters sprawled over a vast area, encompassing numerous departments and sections. The main department housed tasks and commanders, while various sub-sections catered to different functions such as workers, equipment, trainees, officers, and six training departments.

Due to the immense size of the headquarters, Isaac found himself disoriented and struggled to navigate his way, resulting in him being significantly late for the scheduled exercises.

When Coach Dante saw him, a sinister smile crept across his face. Despite multiple warnings and reminders not to be late, Isaac had disregarded them and now faced the consequences.

"Hey, recruit, come here," Coach Dante called out.

As Isaac heard the summons, he realized he would be subjected to some form of punishment, but he had no choice but to comply.

"Yes, Coach, did you call me?" Isaac stood before Dante, his expression void of any emotion, which only served to further enrage the coach.

Navy cadets were expected to salute and speak respectfully to higher-ranking officers, but this young man standing before him ignored these rules. It wasn't that he was unaware of them; he simply chose not to adhere to them, a choice Isaac had made for valid reasons.

"You will run around the G-section 30 times, then lift the 50kg weight 100 times, and finish with 500 push-ups," Dante commanded, a sneer playing across his face.

"Let's see how far you'll go, you vagabond. Skilled officers struggle to complete these exercises in succession," he added, intending to discipline Isaac. There was no place in the Navy for those who didn't respect the rules.

"Yes, sir," Isaac responded obediently. He wasted no time and immediately began performing the exercises. Although the challenge was not difficult for him, he chose not to exert himself to the fullest, mindful of attracting too much attention.

...

After three hours of intense physical exertion, Isaac lay on the ground, panting heavily. He had successfully executed half of the exercise, which earned him deep respect from Coach Dante. Sensing this, Isaac decided to play up his exhaustion, pretending that he was on the verge of passing out.

This diversion allowed Coach Dante to be momentarily distracted, giving Isaac the opportunity to rest. He remained lying on the ground for a while longer, enhancing the authenticity of his act.

...

Isaac sat in the quiet library within the gear section, surrounded by the scent of aged paper emanating from the bookshelves. The ambience of the place enticed him to delve into his reading. In his hands, he held a weathered book titled "The Basic Rules of Naval Officers," its cover displaying the words in faded print.

"Still not what I'm looking for." Isaac sighed in disappointment as he set the book aside and reached for another one. He had been spending hours in the library, hoping to find valuable information about the world he was in. However, his search had been largely unfruitful.

The books he had explored so far had provided little of the specific knowledge he had been seeking. The information seemed vague and incomplete. Despite the disappointment, Isaac knew he couldn't leave the library empty-handed. He had managed to gather some fragments of information, even if they were not as substantial as he had hoped.

He acquired a wealth of knowledge regarding the naval ranks, expanding his understanding beyond the higher-ranking officers. As an avid follower of the anime, Isaac was already familiar with the Admirals and their deputies, but he now recognized the importance of familiarizing himself with the lower ranks and the requirements for promotion within them.

To his surprise, the number of ranks within the Navy was greater than he initially anticipated. The ranks he discovered were as follows:

1. Seaman Recruit

2. Seaman First Class

3. Chief Petty Officer

4. Warrant Officer

5. Ensign

6. Lieutenant Junior Grade

7. Lieutenant

8. Lieutenant Commander

9. Commander

10. Captain

11. Commodore

12. Rear Admiral

13. Vice Admiral

14. Admiral

15. Fleet Admiral, the most powerful and highest-ranking position in the Navy.

"If I were to assess my current strength and rank myself accordingly, I would estimate that it aligns closely with the level of a Lieutenant Junior Grade." Isaac's self-evaluation may appear conservative, but it reflects his grounded perspective.

While he draws upon his military experience from his previous world, he recognizes its effectiveness primarily against opponents of lesser skill.

However, he takes pride in his proficiency in the cutting sword attack, even though he acknowledges that he still has room for growth in refining this technique. He eagerly anticipates the progress and eventual mastery of this skill.

Considering the significance of the naval base he has joined in the southern sea, Isaac notes that the branch commander holds the rank of Commodore, with two captains serving as deputies.

This information gives him insight into the hierarchical structure and the pivotal role of these commanding officers within the base.
