Chapter 159: What Is Luck? II

...........

Never in her entire life had she seen a person with not an ounce of luck, yet as she touched Yovan, she stole absolutely nothing for there was nothing to steal.

Normally, with how her powers work, taking all the luck of someone will make them very unlucky while she becomes extremely lucky to the point of invisibility.

However, if Yovan's luck has always been Zero, doesn't that mean that luck was never on his side? And that's without considering the days of misfortune, the end of the countdown.

Perhaps Yovan had realized that long long ago, thus why he never stops pushing himself, always going through torture greater than that of hell, all for the sake of survival.

Now, it's different. What he desires is very different. His ambitions now are to never have to feel that sense of urgency and anxiousness ever again.

But the only way for his ambitions to come true is for there to be nothing capable of threatening his survival, and he obviously can not follow the path of the previous Limitless... The latter had taken his own life after all.

"Congratulations Sir!!" Barraca congratulated the seemingly lucky but also unlucky handsome man as he won yet again.

She tried her best to hide her ever-changing expression as she watched him play.

He didn't always win as sometimes he didn't have the best cards, but he never lost much either, almost like he can see through all the cards on the table.

"Mind being a dear and bringing me some wine please?" Yovan asked Barraca as he let out a yawn, the more than a hundred million Beli on the table not really getting a reaction out of him.

"Of course Sir," Barraca elegantly nodded before turning around, her face instantly turning cold. She was certain that he was cheating, and he wasn't doing much to hide his seemingly limitless 'luck'.

He must have some kind of Devil Fruit that helps him win. There is simply no other explanation considering his nonexistent luck.

So she naturally contacted the proprietor of the country on the way, just in case the enemy's Devil Fruit is too dangerous.

She soon came back with a glass of wine and a smile. Although her face couldn't help but twitch at Yovan's doubled winnings, "It seems that your beginner's luck never ends, Sir." She remarked.

"Maybe. I'm starting to think it's just skill." Yovan shrugged as he lazily made another bet, feeling her hands on his shoulders, even lightly brushing against his skin.

Some might think that she's interested in him, but he knows. That's why he's here after all, but he allowed her to mess around because just as she is observing him, he's also observing her.

He can see it, her luck growing little by little as she walked around the table, sometimes 'helping' some players with their chips, but accidentally brushing against their skin.

He could see their luck instantly reaching zero, vanishing only to become hers. Then she came back behind him, and he noticed that while his luck remained nonexistent, her own overpowering luck influenced things around her.

He started getting bad cards and only bad cards. It's not that he became unlucky, but that she was so lucky that everything started going her way.

Seeing a single crow is often thought to be a bad omen, but seeing two could indicate good luck is coming. This single phrase allowed Yovan to see through luck and even slightly influence it.

Such is the power of the World Crow. However, with so many powers, Yovan found it extremely difficult to master, and he was certain that it would take many thousands of mastery before he can awaken it.

Perhaps his current World Devil Fruit would only evolve after reaching the ten thousand marks, or even higher.

That's why he decided to accelerate the process. How? With the help of another Devil Fruit. Barraca's devil fruit happened to be a good alternative way.

So Yovan stopped, something almost no one in the casino seem to be able to do. He stopped while he was up, an impossibility literally just took place.

Casinos are brainwashing machines, and they're always working against you but at the same time with you. They'll make sure you enjoy your time inside, and never stop losing money until you become worthless.

Yovan's actions stunned Barraca, but she regained her composure very quickly, "Have you gotten bored? Would you like to visit our slot machines next?"

She asked though she wondered where the proprietor of the country is. She would feel much more confident in dealing with Yovan with him around.

Yovan opened his mouth to say something, but unfortunately, Laffitte was faster than him as the ship shook, and that says a lot considering its unrivaled size.

Yovan's mouth twitched as he released a smile, "Perhaps I've grown? I suddenly don't feel like being chaotic at all, just some peace before I leave... But well, let Laffitte be Laffitte."

Barraca wanted to ignore him and quickly attend to whatever emergency is happening on the ship, but his words made her stunned as she halted her steps. She was after all an executive of the city of dreams.

"You... What do you mean? Laffitte?" She had heard of his name. In fact, very few people didn't know about the Strangers, especially Laffitte.

Laffitte had after all surpassed the bounty of all the other Strangers after years of work, creating chaos everywhere. He wanted to clear the stain on his name so that the Strangers no longer laugh at his bounty.

"I'm gonna kill you, but I do wonder, what can your luck do against me? What misfortune can it bring that I haven't already faced?" He had to wonder since her ability can only suck away the luck that he has while true misfortune is that which is brought by Limitless at the end of every countdown.

However, if she was extremely lucky, beyond imagination, would he be able to hurt her? That's what he wondered and why he allowed her to accumulate so much luck.

Horror emerged on Barraca's face as she watched Yovan's appearance change, showing a face and golden hair that everyone knows... It was none other than the Stranger.

The bounty of ten billion Beli was naturally a shock to all, and word of it spread quite far to the point that only a few souls don't know of him.

Yovan took a step forward, and she took a step back, coinciding with the fall of a chandelier, right upon Yovan's head, but he didn't evade it.

He continued to move forward even as she begged, "Plea... W-what do you want? Jus... Just leave me alone!"

A bullet collided with his bulletproof skin. Many other things fell on him. The entire ship even seemingly started moving erratically, somehow.

However, nothing affected him. In the few steps he took, just about hundreds of misfortunes fell upon him, not because he's unlucky, and he is, but because of her luck trying to protect her... To no avail.

Luck gave up on her as she stumbled her steps backward, falling on her butt, "Why!!? I haven't done anything to you!!!"

"So luck can be overcome with pure force and perseverance. I guess that's kinda what I've been doing all along." All along, he has only been talking to himself, as if she wasn't in his eyes, as if she was just a test subject.

He crouched to her level, and finally seriously looked into her eyes, making her confused, especially as his eyes shone with a golden light, the fascinating light of the sun.

If only for a second, he looked into her eyes, but she no longer had eyes, only two dark tunnels, made by two golden beams... She was dead.

Yovan stood up, opened a door by his side, and brought out a basket of fruits. He waited awhile before her Devil Fruit manifested itself amidst the fruits.

Without further ado, Misfortune appeared and took out a tiny piece of the fruit before allowing it to drop down its throat, and that's it.
