Chapter 29

Title: Sleepless Nights...

It didn't take long for Max's new ship to finish building, and it was three times the size of the average marine battleship.

The ship was massive, and last night had the finishing touches put on it. As Kaku and Blueno packed their things and got ready to go on the ship after thanking Iceburg and the rest of the company.

Still though, as Kaku gave a handshake to Lucci the man tugged and pulled him close in a hug. But this was all a cover as he whispered into his ear. "Be careful, he is dangerous, not just physically. Suspected of being affiliated with the Revolutionaries."

After that, they both smiled and waved each other off like nothing was said.

Kaku looked at Kalifa and she gazed back. "What are you looking at? This is sexual harassment you know."

This made Kaku look at the ground depressed. But this was all part of Kalifa's character. So neither of them took it to heart.

"Ah, man… she is still like this? Can't you at least give me a handshake?" He extended his hand.

She smiled and extended her hand. "This is sexual harassment you scum."

At the same time, Max looked at the group with a strange look in his eyes.

Lucci looked up at the helm of the ship and saw Max looking at them with a smile on my face. The secret agent truly didn't feel anything dangerous from the man. But he knew deep down just how dangerous Max could be. After all, before appearing to join the Marines, he had no history, no family, and no relatives. His history was blank. Only Revolutionaries can do something like that. Make someone's history disappear, even from the World Government archives.

After saying their goodbyes, the new crew members also joined the crew. Max was all smiles, his joy was infectious. "C'mon everyone! Time for a feast to welcome our new crew members!"

The crew cheered, Raynare was the only one suspicious. She looked at Max and saw him looking at her. Their eyes met and she immediately understood that he didn't trust the new crew members.

"Oy! Max, what's all this noise?" Sharlia's annoyed voice came out from below deck as she came up. She yawned, her hair was all messed up, and looked at everyone annoyed.

Kaku and Blueno's eyes widened, they had reports about the Celestial Dragon that had joined Max. But it was hard to believe, after all, everyone knew how Celestial Dragons were. This was one of the main reasons that they joined, at least that was what Lucci said since he is the only one who can contact the World Government while on a mission. He wouldn't be caught talking to the World Government due to his animalistic senses, so it was left to him.

In an instant, the secret agents schooled their expressions. This was the first time they had broken character, showing that they knew this girl even though they shouldn't know so. Though any CP9 Agent knew the World Noble's faces by memory.

'This is definitely Sharlia, a World Noble.

The younger sister of Saint Charlos, and the daughter of Saint Roswald. Age, fifteen years old.' Kakau observed this all with a smile on his face, hoping that Max hadn't seen their surprised faces. He met Blueno's eyes and they understood each other without saying anything. But Kaku's eyes widened once he saw a shadow behind Blueno.

Max was behind Blueno and put a hand around the big man's shoulder. "I am glad you are all settling in well. The sleepy woman is Sharlia, she is a recent addition to the crew too. But be careful, she isn't nice to newcomers..." Max looked at her again and smiled. "Actually scratch that. If you aren't me, then she won't be nice to you. But I won't stop you from trying to befriend her."

He then walked off, leaving behind a nervous Blueno. The man felt like she just had a heart attack, he didn't sense Max at all even when he was behind him. They took their eyes off him for a split second due to Sharlia's appearance, and in that instance, he could have killed them both before they had the chance to react.

This mission of theirs would be way more dangerous than they thought. Unlike Iceburg, which was relatively normal, this Max was a monster and one instance where they might drop their guards would get them killed. But both knew that they wouldn't be talking together about anything related to the World Government on this ship… just to be sure.

And so, Max and his crew set sail, a nervous Kaku doing all he could to plan how to make himself seem proper and explain why he might know about Sharlia. Should he say that he was from Sabaody Archipelago? That way it would be easy to say that he saw her there.

But Kaku dismissed such a plan, not only was it too obvious. But he had also told a different origin story in Water 7. Max was a competent man and would investigate if he had any suspicion. He might have gotten suspicious initially when they saw Sharlia and their facade broke for a split second.

'Did Max already ask people in Water 7 about my identity?' Wondered Kaku. 'He might have been drunk when he offered me to join. But the next day he should have investigated me. Am I being too paranoid? After all, Max had hundreds of Marines under him and it's doubtful that he would know about everyone's story before they joined the Marines.'

But Kaku decided to be careful for some time until Max would let down his guard.

It took a whole week for the ship to reach a new island. It was one very close to the Drum Kingdom. Kaku had once again been shocked by Max. Not even once did he drop his guard, even when sleeping it felt like he would wake up any time as soon as anyone opened his door.

Kaku laid down on his hammock, resting, these last nights he hasn't been able to sleep at all. It felt like someone was watching him.

He trusted his instincts and kept quiet during the whole journey. Even when Blueno confirmed that Max was in his room. Kaku couldn't get rid of the feeling that he was being watched.

It was strange, everyone knew that Max had a Zoan Bear Fruit. But doubts started appearing in Kaku's mind. How could someone see through walls? So that led Kaku to believe that someone else was observing him. But he couldn't tell who.

The only other possible suspect good enough to be able to escape his observation would be Ray. The young girl who dressed like a man. But even she had her own room, who was observing him?

Kaku's mind was at its breaking point, he had barely slept this week. And every time he would go asleep, that feeling of being watched would intensify and even coax on with malicious intent. The enemy was playing with him and wanted Kaku to be distressed before anything else.

Blueno doesn't seem to experience the same thing. Even if he did, he could just enter his Door Dimension and it seemed like the observation stopped. But staying in that place for too long would notify Max that they weren't in the ship and that would get their heads sliced off.

But this was a whole other problem though. This ship was a torture device on its own, it was as if it's waiting for them to go and tell Max about their mission. It was only a matter of time now, the sleep deprivation would start getting to them and around the 20th day, they would start developing hallucinations. One could be as strong as they wanted, but no one can stay up without sleep. Even monsters have to sleep…

Though Kaku didn't know that amongst this world, many kinds of monsters existed.

....

None of the CP9 agents will underestimate Max, especially with the 'accidental' show of power that he made. So most of their scheemes wouldn't work this way.

Plus they can't go against him directly, since Sharlia is fond of him, she could order all of the CP9 agents' heads.
