Prologue

January 1995

Jessica's POV

"Jessica I cannot believe that you are still packing! Do you want us to miss our flight?!" My mum yelled, standing by the doorway of my room.

The look on her face could best be described as intense anger. I was so done for!

We were moving to ocean city for a short vacation and my mum was the most excited and nervous about it.

We have heard so much about the town and my mum was the ever curious type. She wanted to see for herself the tales they told about Ocean city, the town that lurks with the supernatural.

I knew that my dad was doing this because of her.  He would do anything for her and me, and I would do anything for them too.

"Mum I'm done I just need to pack some few things and___!"

"Jessie I'm giving you five minutes and Nothing more. If after five minutes I do not see you downstairs you will be very sorry!" My mum warned pointing at me. She hissed and stumped out of the room.

African mothers were the same everywhere. My mum looked so young to have birthed me, but her looks didn't stop her from acting all motherly.

I didn't know why she was always too strict on me, maybe because I was the only child. It was times like this that I wished I had another sibling. One would think that since I looked just like her she would cut me some slack but no, never.

I put the remaining of my clothes in my box, not folding them properly. I didn't bother putting on make up.

I ran down the stairs with my box hitting the ground and making a hell lot of noise. I hoped that my mum doesn't complain about the noise, at least I didn't spend more that the supposed five minutes she gave me.

My dad was making a call when I got down. His tone was soft as always. He saw me rushing down and smiled at me.

I smiled back coming closer to him.

He put his hands on my shoulder and led me outside to were he had parked his car. Then he helped me put my box in the boot of the Mercedes.

My mum rolled her eyes saying something like keep spoiling her.

I bit back my laughter. Sometimes it felt like we were both struggling for the love of my father. Ridiculous right!

My dad was so handsome, dark, tall, and good. We both loved him so much.

My dad was just about to open the car door with his right hand while struggling to manage the phone on his left. But my mum would hear nothing of it. She shoved him off the door. "You shouldn't make calls while driving, I still love my life."

She said taking the car keys from him. My dad chuckled and pecked her, then he moved to the other side.

He stayed on the phone till we got to the airport, only then did he tell the person on the phone that he would call later as we were already in the airport.

It was a lie though as I've heard that while in Ocean city you cannot contact other places.

Ocean city was like they said it would be. It was unbelievably cold and chilly. Snow fell heavily even though it was autumn.

Immediately we got to the Airport the wind hit me with such velocity, I felt my thin bone would break. I started shivering and shaking and my fingers felt numb. The pants and long sleeved shirt I wore did nothing to protect me from the cold.

We had to start checking our bags for sweaters and jackets to prevent us from dying in the cold.

I was slimmer than my mum and dad so they gave me their scarfs. My mom wore her jacket and sweater. Which made her look fuller than she already was. My dad just put on a hoodie. He didn't look like he was suffering from the same predicament as we were.

Everyone in the airport were staring at us. I didn't know if it was because its weird for an all black family to want to spend their vacation in Ocean city or because there was something else. I felt as if I had just entered a death zone.

My dad hired a taxi to the house we were meant to stay in. As the driver moved to the house I came to know why my mum loved it.

Ocean city was a beautiful quiet town and the cottage we were meant to stay in was in a secluded place with lots of trees and a small hut in the middle surrounded my a lake.

The place was beautiful but it was secluded. I felt the hairs on my body stand up. There was a strong feeling of doom in the air.

Welcome to the darkest night!
