4 Chapter Four

Chris POV

I sit at my desk as I watch her leave through the door. Pondering on my thoughts.

A baby?

Me. A Father?

What about the marriage?

I grab my phone out of my coat and call Colt.

"We need to talk." I say as he answers the phone. "It's important."

"Get your ass over here then." he says through the phone.

Impatient I hang up, grab my keys and go out to my car.

I end up arriving at the place where we are meeting. A high end restaurant of course. Colts favorite picks.

I go to sit down in my seat as he greets me.

"Hey man, whats happening?" he says taking a sip of his whiskey.

"Remember that chick from a month ago at the bar?" I question, already knowing his answer.

"Um, No. Why would I?" he chuckles.

"Well I got a problem." I state firmly.

"What kind of problem?" he looks at me, confused.

"Shes pregnant."I say taking a sip of my jack and coke.

"No shit. Really? Is it yours?"

"Ya, she's only been with two people apparently." I say running my hands threw my hair.

"I would still get a DNA test man, you never know nowadays." He says shrugging his shoulders.

"Shes going to make a doctors appointment to find out how far along which should also determine if it matches when we were together." I explain.

"Do you even remember?" He chuckles.

"Surprisingly, I do. It was the night before we announced the engagement."

"This might not be as bad as you think." he grins at me rolling his cup in his hand.

"What do you mean?" I question.

"Well, think about it. She gets pregnant, your marriage is this week. Do you think Jaime will want to be a step mother? This may be your golden ticket out of this marriage." His words pierce through me.

I form a smile on my face, as I finish my drink. "I have to go I'll call you later." I say, grabbing my coat, leaving.

The Next Day

I'm sitting in the office going through papers, when I get a phone call from a unknown number.

"This is Chris." I answer the phone.

"Hi Mr. Miller, This is Dina. We spoke last night."

"You can call me Chris." I chuckle. "I think we are far from the formalities."

I lean back in my office chair waiting for her to respond.

"I'm sorry. I just thought I'd give you a call and let you know, that I made an appointment for later today."

"What time?"

"3pm with Dr. Rasmond. 303 Drive." she replies.

"Alright, I'll be there." I say hanging up the phone.

I call down to my secretary to have her reschedule my meetings for the day and tell her at 2:30 if anybody calls or comes i stepped out for an important meeting.

I anxiously wait for the time to pass until finally its 3pm and I'm walking into the Dr's office. Dina is already here. Shes wearing a black dress with some high sweater boots to match.i walk over to greet her.

"Hey, how are you feeling?" I ask.

"Hi. I'm a little better how are you?" she replied.

"I'm good."

We sit in silence until the nurse comes to call us in.

"When was your last period Ms. Smith?" the doctor asks.

"October 3rd" Dina says.

"So that would make you one and half months pregnant based on your last period, but let's do a sonogram to make sure. Please change into this." The doctor says handing her a gown to change into.

Dina goes into the bathroom and sitting a few minutes shes dressed in a white grown.

"You may feel some discomfort, please try to ignore it. It will be cold as well." The doctor says as Dina nods her head.

We are both looking at the screen as a bunch of white and black show up.

"There's the baby. The heart rate looks good. I'm just taking measurements now."

"Thank you" Dina says staring at the little screen.

"The baby looks to be around 5 or 6 weeks." The doctor responds.

"So thats what October 17th?" I ask.

"I will have to look at calander, but based on her last period, yes that would be around the time of ovulation. Sperm can live inside the body for up to 5 days. So it could be that day or 5 days later. You can't really narrow it down to an exact date. Did you use protection or was this an accident?" The doctor asks scrunched her nose and raising her eyebrow.

"We used protection." Dina says.

"Actually, I don't believe I did." I say, grabbing the back of my neck.

Dina whips her head back and eyes me.

"What?" she shockingly says.

"I'm going to print these pictures and I will give you two a moment, before I draw some blood for the tests." the doctor says quickly hitting some buttons on the machine, and handing us the pictures. She turns as she opens the door, "You can get dressed now. Ill be back in a few moments."

I nod my head as I watch the door close.

"You didn't think to tell me this?" She scoffed crossing her hands over her chest.

"Well I thought you were on birth control, and to be honest I was really drunk that night and completely forgot. I mean, I thought about you since then, but I didn't expect this." I explain to her holding my head down while rubbing my hands threw my hair.

"A simple note or something you could have left. Is this what you do to everyone?" She yells.

"No, your the only one. It wasn't on purpose. I'm sorry, getting upset about it isn't going to change this factor. However, we need to figure out moving forward what we are going to do." I explain, hoping she can reason with me.

She scoffs and rolls her eyes. "So what are you suggesting Mr. Miller?"

"Call me Chris." I state firmly.

"Fine. Chris. What are you suggesting that we do?" she says again.

"Well, I think we should go to dinner and discuss this. Don't you?" I suggest.

The doctor knocks back on the door and starts to draw her blood. After we are done, we make an appointment four weeks from now.

We make our way down to my car to head to the restaurant that I have in mind.

We arrive at the restaurant within a few minutes and I'm greeted by the same hostess thats there all the time. Its a small family owned restaurant right off of a lake. The outdoor seating is closed during this time, but the views inside are stunning. Open windows everywhere except the kitchen area.

"Here are the menus, the waitress will be with you guys in a few moments to take your drink orders."

"Thank you Stephanie." I say while grabbing Dina chair for her to sit down.

"You come here a lot?" Dina questions, while grabbing a menu.

"I try to. I enjoy the food, the owners are very nice people and they don't treat me like a celebrity. To them, I'm an ordinary person. Its refreshing. Most of the staff know me as well." I share shrugging my shoulders.

"Good Afternoon Chris, Do you want me to get your usual?" The waitress asks.

"Yes, please." I say nodding my head and turning to Dina.

"And what about for you dear?" She asks.

"I guess I'll have a water and a salad please."

"You got it. I'll grab your drinks and be right back." she smiles grabbing our menus.

"That's Lisa. She is the owners daughter." I say to Dina.

"Oh, she seems nice." Dina shyly says.

"She is, when she wants to be." I chuckle trying to break the silence, "So, about the baby." I start to say, before she cuts me off.

"Listen, if you don't want to be apart of the baby's life, you don't have to. I'm not going to force you. I just felt that it was right to tell you, I know that you have a fiancée. However, I couldn't wait until after you were married. It just felt wrong.Your right I can't get upset at you, because we both made the choice to sleep together. I was just caught off guard at the doctors." She explains to me very calmly while smiling at Lisa whose coming back with our drinks. "Thank you." she tells her.

"Your welcome, hun. Your food should be here shortly." Lisa says before walking away to attend new customers who just sat down.

"Its not like that. You see, I want to be apart of it's life. It's my child. I will not give up on my child. I can provide for them, just like I will provide for you, since you are my child's mother. We may not be together or know each other very much, but I will love them more then anything." I say. reassuring her of anything doubts that she has.

"Really? What about your fiancée?" She questions.

"Jaime? What about her?" I ask, confused on why she would even care.

"Shes your fiancée, shouldn't she know?" Dina says puzzled by my reaction.

"Its not her business to know. Personally I don't see why it concerns her." I say, grabbing my jack and coke.

"It is if she is going to be the step mother?" she retorts.

I laugh.

She gives me a confused look, her eyebrow is raised and scrunched up.

"How can she be a step mother, if I call off the wedding?" I proclaim.

Dina spits her water out of her mouth, just as lisa comes up with our food.

"What?" she coughs.

"Here's your food. Enjoy." Lisa smiles walking away.

"I'm not going to get married." I firmly state.
