When you looked at the sky, you could see the moon, and when you looked down, you could see the moon reflected on a beautiful lake, but today, this lake would light up.

Every year on a spring night like this, tiny specs of lights bounced throughout the forest, looking for a purpose. As the specs of lights bounced through the grass, they made a beautiful tune that could be heard by a restless girl on the porch of a tiny wood house. She couldn't see them as the bouncing lights were hidden among the bushes and trees, but she recognized the song.

The mid-teen girl was definitely curious, but the sorrow in her heart was more potent than her curiosity that she turned the unexpected tune into comfort as she hid her face between her hands once again. Suddenly, a strong wing passed by the forest in front of her porch. The girl gasped with surprise as a big bulky tree fell, creating a big thud.

"Nina, what the fuck did you do?" Mara asked as she opened the back door and peeked her head. The strong wind and the beautiful song suddenly stopped.

"I didn't do anything; the tree suddenly fell." Nina responded with an annoyed voice.

"a tree?" Nina's big sister squinted her eyes and could not see anything but total darkness. "how would you know it was a tree?"

"because I saw it, genius."

"Yeah, of course, and I breathe underwater." Mara rolled her eyes, and under her breath, she said, "it was probably just something she threw. Why she always has to make herself interesting?" and peeked her head back inside.

"if you won't believe me, why ask me?" Nina sighed and closed her eyes. She didn't understand why people treated her differently. Nina lived like anyone else her age and was honest. But everyone said she lived in a fantasy, and although she was only 15, people would tell her to grow up. "why?" she whispered.

As Nina took one more deep breath and decided she had spent too long outside, she opened her eyes but was surprised by a strange sight. The fallen tree had opened view to the lake she had played so much throughout her childhood, but that wasn't the strange part; this lake was lit up light blue. Of course, it couldn't be. Nina's dad, Mr. Sanz, has always warned his kids not to go out to the lake at night as it was too dark. So what was this?

Nina tried to clear up her eyes with her index finger's knuckles, but as soon as she opened them again, the sight became even odder. Nina could see the bouncing lights. Her eyebrows raised as she looked around to make sure no one was seeing her. She went down the porch steps, and her petite feet touched the grass. It felt as if a strong force was attracting her, but she had been prohibited from being in the woods in the dark, but it didn't feel scary at all, and something in her told her it was okay to keep walking towards the lake.

The grass beneath her feet lit us as she kept taking steps, and the song played once again. She didn't think much of this as it always happened to her, although nobody believed her. Mr. Sanz was an exception, but he would simply dismiss it as fireflies, but how would he dismiss the tune?

It was not dark anymore as the big pond lit up its surroundings. Nina didn't have her glasses on, but she could see the tiny specs of lights bounce on the water. There were millions of them, and they were just passing by to make their way into the deep forest as they lit up their way.

"definitely fireflies," Nina said while smiling. She had seen this phenomenon on the internet before and even gasped for hours at its beauty, but she never thought it would happen in the forest behind her house. She felt the whole thing was magical.

Suddenly, a heavy feeling rested on her chest. They wouldn't believe her if she told someone about what she was witnessing. Nina wasn't sure it would work, but she took her phone out and pointed the camera at the fireflies. It looked great on her screen, so her petite index finger touched the button.

"NO!" she screamed. She had forgotten to turn off the flashlight. The insects had all disappeared, and the place became pitch dark again. "no, no..." she muttered. Once again, she felt like she had ruined something great. This was her first time seeing something so magical, and it was probably the last time as well.

Nina sighed and turned around, intending to trace her steps back to the house since the pond wasn't that far anyway. Then she heard a splash in the water and turned around. Something was lighting up a tiny part of the lake, "oh no, " she gasped, "what did I do?" She said, concerned. Nina was about to go back, but many thoughts came into her head: crocodiles, scary Loch Ness monsters, although she didn't live in Scotland. But she had confused the firefly, and now it had fallen in the water. It was the right thing to do, so she stopped thinking, she walked to the edge of the lake and rapidly reached in the water and trapped the insect in between her hands, and ran back to her house.
