11 We'll See How It Goes

LUCAS

The icy grey sky restlessly rumbled as lightning cut crazy zig-zags into the sky, each of them painting a previously unseen path as the rain poured over the city.

The air in the medical centre's hallway had an undertone of bleach. The walls were painted a magnolia colour and the tiles on the floor were slate grey. Above, the ceiling was made from those polystyrene squares laid on a grid-like frame.

Lucas had just stepped out of the decontamination chamber after visiting the infected people. He had been made to wear personal protective equipment before seeing them but he still had to be decontaminated because of how contagious the virus was.

They had been very happy to see him. There were one thousand and eight infected people with most of them being elderly people. The people that didn't have serious symptoms were currently isolated in the building next to the medical centre and Lucas was going to visit them in the morning.

The symptoms of the new virus were fever, severe muscle and joint pains, fatigue, bloodshot eyes and skin rash. Haemorrhaging, vomiting and dehydration were the final stages. It was the same symptoms as the Sirizan virus which is why everyone was shocked when the cure for the Sirizan virus didn't work for it.

Lucas had guessed that the reason the cure didn't work might be because the werewolves were immune to the Sirizan virus when it was spreading.

He didn't mention anything to anyone about a new scientist trying to find the cure except for his two betas, Ella and Vinay.

Parisa had told him after dinner that she would set up a meeting between him and Jacob tomorrow and she'll text him the details.

Some of the rooms on this floor had viewing windows. As Lucas walked by one, he watched the nurse's eyes emanate a blue light that scanned the length of the patient's body. All the doctors and nurses that interacted with infected patients were humanoid robots.

Humanoid robots had been a must have in a lot of companies before the virus.

After the virus, most of them were tossed aside to create jobs for humans since their population had dropped drastically. Lucas had only decided to use the robots because he couldn't risk more werewolf doctors getting infected since some of them already were.

They really couldn't afford to lose doctors due to the fact that a lot of medical schools didn't accept werewolf or vampire students.

According to those schools, werewolves and vampires were trouble and they didn't want to be associated with either of them.

Barnes Academy of Science and Technology was the first prominent school to begin to accept werewolf and vampire students this year. Lucas thought it was probably because they needed more students after the population drop.

A couple of doctors and nurses were in the hallway and they all muttered a 'good bye sir' which he responded to with a smile as he headed for the glass double doors of the medical centre.

He was soaked in less than a minute after stepping outside the hospital.

The rain hit his skin like it would go right through and the droplets that ran down his face clung to his lashes. He quickly headed to the car he had parked in front of the hospital and pressed his thumb against the thumb scanner on the door handle.

The rain tapped out a peculiar tune as it hit the roof of the car before the door clicked open.

"Lucas!" a voice called out from behind and he looked back to see Vinay jogging towards him.

He got into the car and left the door open. Soon enough Vinay joined him, closing the door behind him.

"You still drive this Renfield whatever?"

"I'm not the one driving," Lucas muttered. "Sutton."

The car beeped and the blue neon lights came on. "Yes Lucas."

"Is she flirting with you? Vinay asked with a surprised look on his face.

Lucas gave him a blank stare for a couple of seconds before the corner of Vinay's mouth twitched and he averted his gaze from him.

"Anyway, when are you meeting Jacob Peterson?"

Lucas had texted Vinay and Ella the things Parisa told him on his way home. He had also told Vinay that he was going to visit the infected patients at the medical centre which was probably the reason why he had been outside the building.

"Parisa will set up a meeting between the both of us tomorrow. She said she'll text me the details."

Lucas picked up his phone from the small table in the middle of the car and checked if Parisa had texted the details. She hadn't.

"Sutton, drive home."

"Driving home. Destination Wolfborn. Calibrating... Calibrating... Werewolf Territory. Proceed?"

'We're already in werewolf territory,' Lucas thought as he rolled his eyes. "Proceed."

"Driving to Wolfborn."

"Well this is one rude car. I'm pretty sure Renfield put that setting in the car by himself," Vinay stated as the car began to move.

"Ah, that reminds me," Vinay continued. "I got the list of the internship applicants for Harrison Corp. today."

Lucas raised a brow at him. "And?"

"Tyrone Bridges' son, Kyle Bridges, is on the list."

Lucas let his head fall back to the head rest. The way he felt about Renfield Sutton was the same way he felt about Tyrone Bridges. He hated the both of them equally.

"Imani Tallerico's brother is also on the list," Vinay added and Lucas perked up.

He remembered what Parisa said about not wanting to try to convince her and he leaned back in his seat. He really wanted Imani to help him but after what Parisa said, he didn't want to push the scientist.

He wasn't sure of what to do.

"Should I accept the both of them?" Vinay asked and Lucas muttered a 'yeah' absent mindedly.

"Parking..." the car was slowing down after it got to Lucas' house. "Arrived at destination, Wolfborn. Caution. Werewolf territory."

Vinay had an incredulous look on his face. "Did I mention that this car is really rude?"
