254 The Past

Imani pulled away from Lucas when she heard voices behind her and she glanced over her shoulder to see five people walking down the path. They seemed drunk as they walked past the both of them without looking at them so either they were too drunk to notice them or they just decided to ignore them.

She faced Lucas again and he wiped away the tears on her face as she held his arms tightly. "You didn't... you didn't deserve that. Nobody deserves that. I'm sorry," she said, not able to stop the tears from flowing again, and he cupped her face in his hands. "I'm so sorry," she repeated.

"It wasn't your fault," he muttered because she kept apologizing and he wiped her tears away again. She then realized that he must have blamed himself for what happened to his family because none of them would have died if he'd stayed at home that night and her heart tightened in her chest again.

"It wasn't your fault either."
