The officers asked the man what happened, and he just said Kenji attacked him for no reason. Kenji played the recording. The police cuffed the man and carted him away.

James asked Kenji, “Are you okay?”

“Yes, quite.”

“Are you really a black belt? Do you have PTSD?”

Kenji smirked. “Yes on the black belt thing. No on PTSD. Never been in the military, but I like to say Ihave it. Makes people wary of me. We need a lawyer. I’ll take tomorrow off work and start on that.”

James spent a week chatting with a particular guy he met on the dating site. He lived in San Francisco, fifty miles north of San Jose, further than he’d normally drive, but the man seemed special. James was always suspicious and refused to give his personal email out so soon, instead communicating via the dating site.
