11 Chapter 11

James ran over. “Dad.”

The paramedics checked him out and took over with the CPR. Dad came around. They loaded him and whisked him to the hospital. Kenji drove James and his mom there.

James paced. His mother sat in a near-zombie state. She prayed.

It seemed like forever, but the doctor came out. “He’s had a heart attack, medium level. He’s medicated, but you can see him. Just don’t expect too much from him. We want to keep him in the hospitalfor a few days and schedule him for follow-up with a cardiologist. He’ll likely need bypass surgery.”

Two hours later, Kenji drove James and his mom back to James’ place. James rode in front and held Kenji’s hand.

“I am so grateful to you for all you’ve done for us.” He wiped tears. “How did you know about CPR?”

“I went to college in Oregon, rural area. They needed EMTs and the like. I went to school in the summer to be certified. I worked my way through college working as an EMT.”
