1 Infection Day

It was late at night, Dr. Hyakutake, Souta was filing up medical records, when suddenly a loud explosion near the area of his workplace occurred, glass were broken and flew everywhere while Souta was suddenly thrown off the ground due to the impact while he was still pilling up his recorded files in his desk. He was knocked down cold for a few minutes when he woke up his vision and hearing was blurry. When he adjusted it, all he could see was his office was wrecked and the televisions were barely even working, all he sees was the destruction outside, a meteorite landed all over the city including the damage of his home town out of the city. He was so worried that his family might've also gotten struck by the disaster of the meteorites, even though his body ached he forced himself to stand up and rushed to his car to go home not minding the horrifying disaster his in workplace.

He was so focused on driving home, it took him nearly an hour or so because of the chaos, the road was blocked with so many cars and people panicking. So he decided to take a shortcut through the woods and after 40 minutes he finally reached his home town but all he sees was the people of his town, turned them into savages that's been yearning for human flesh, some became mutated like monsters. They didn't look human any anymore and moreover cold chill run down his spine when he made eye contact with one of them, he saw how dead the eyes of one of the residents when he stared at him like he was prey. He stepped harder on his pedal to speed it up for him to come home to his residence.

He finally got home, shocked, he quickly rushed over to his broken door, and began to look all over their house, there to be found no one except for a faint voice crying, hiding to his daughter's room. He quickly ran to where the voice was and found his daughter.

"Miku!? Oh, thank goodness. I'm glad you're safe. Where's mommy?"

Miku was cowering in fear like there was no tomorrow and stood silent until they heard something down stairs. They heard screams, rummaging, and snarling in the kitchen. Souta acted but Miku held his hands and said:

"Please don't leave me dad, there's a monster in there. Mom was trying to save me. Dad, I'm scared."

He ignored the fact that it was dangerous to go in there but, he had to check if his wife is still alive. He entered the kitchen and saw a corps of a man lying in the floor and saw Sora, injured and hurt with a bite on her neck, holding a bloody knife in her hand, he quickly grabbed some towels to stop the bleeding saying "it's going to be alright. Just stay with me okay?" she looked him in the eyes with great sorrow and said:

"I'm sorry, I-I'm really sorry to leave you with our daughter. Please promise me that you'll protect her. Here, take my necklace it'll give you hope, they knew this going to happen, so please don't let anyone t-take it…"

Miku was devastated that she had to see her mother die in front of her. As Sora struggles to breathe, she whispered to the air saying to her daughter, "You…have…my…eyes..." The last words she said to her and died. Not long Sora suddenly stood up growling and attacked her own husband. He struggles to push her back and yet he looked at his daughter and saw fear as she watched, so he gave it all his strength and shoved her away and ran out the kitchen with Miku. They ran upstairs to their bedroom and locked the door Souta grabbed the gun, hidden under their bed.

"Are you going to kill mom?"

"We don't have a choice Miku, I have to keep you safe."

She broke through the door with bloodlust in her eyes then attacked Souta, he shot her countless times, but she just won't fall until she grabbed him and struggles again for his life. Miku then bashed her head with a nearby hammer and Sora went down, she then grabbed her father's gun and shot her countless times in the head.

*BANG*

*BANG*

*BANG*

*Why can't I stop? Why am I shooting mom? It's so cold. Why is everything black? Dad, I'm scared. Please, someone I help me!*

As she screams out of sadness and fear, Souta grabbed her and held her to calm her down. He held her like there was no tomorrow and said to her in tears: "Miku that's enough. It's alright. It's over, you did well." She looked at him feeling relieved and at the same time guilt in her heart that she killed her own mother for the sake of their lives.

"Dad, I'm so sorry. I-I killed mom."

"It's alright Miku. I'm just glad that you're safe."

He wasn't sure of what to do next. He needed to know what kind of disease that infected her, so he took some samples from the corps of that body downstairs and decided to take it to their basement, where he studies biological specimens, but he was surprised when he sees the sample is mutating rapidly every second. It was a new discovery for him. However, it was too advanced for him to make an antidote, so he decided look and ask for help from an old friend that he used to work with.

"Miku, we're going to a friend of mine. He's going to help us, so you don't have to be afraid"

"So we're just going to leave mom here? Shouldn't we bury her fist? I mean that's the least we can do."

"Miku. Your mother wanted you to survive. We don't have enough time and we don't know what's out there. But we can be sure if leave here, now."

"…Okay…"

And off they go headed north where Souta and Miku took off with their lives, heading into the unknown, and hoping for a chance to survive.
