6 Chapter 6

She spends the last two months like that. Her only break is when she helps her mother in the mornings with preparing the food for the restaurant. She doesn't have hobbies as the hobbies of her past life were reading and drawing, two things she can't do now that she isn't able to see.

Also, she or better be said, 'he' has gotten more used to his body. Mostly thanks to her Mihawk's template which has reached 9%, some of his memories have started to leak through. Katara's strangely enough didn't start doing that until he was at 20% of synchronization. Now he has some basic knowledge of swordsmanship which he uses by practicing with a thick bamboo plant. Katara's techniques are used by practicing with a bucket filled with water.

Anyway, one week before the start of the Academy, all the students are told they must go through a physical exam. He wonders if it will be like in the future where they used this test to deny the not fitting to be a ninja. He doesn't think so though as it's a time of war and they need cannon fodder, too.

Is it bleak to think like that? Yes. Is it any less true? No.

From what he can perceive everyone is mostly doing an obstacle course and some shuriken and kunai throwing. They're also asked if they know any jutsus before letting them go. He's also heard from the applicants that they will be separated by classes depending on the prowess they show, which doesn't surprise her as one won't teach the clan children the same stuff that the cannon fodder learns.

Yuki must not be cannon fodder if he wants to survive.

So when it's his turn, he squares his shoulders and prepares to go for the obstacle course, which frankly is a piece of cake with his Kenbunshoku Haki. He's one of the top ten, actually, which makes him beam with happiness through the next stage.

Which is shuriken and kunai throwing.

As soon as the guy who monitors the exam approaches him, ready to give him the ninja tools, she bows his head. "I'm sorry, but I can't do it."

And she really can't. He can see better than before but while people are easy to see because they've got blood inside of them, objects are slightly harder and mostly a blob to her senses. She doesn't want to injure someone accidentally because she doesn't know how to throw.

"Why?" the teacher asks him, tone slightly annoyed. Probably because there are still other kids behind him waiting for their turn.

So, trying to ignore his cold, clammy hands, he answers, "I'm blind."

That stops everyone nearby. From the kids complaining to the annoyed teacher.

"What?"

She nervously looks up, as always, her use of pronouns going wonky when she's nervous or experiencing strong emotions. "I can't see… May I move on to the next test, sir?"

Yuki can see from the teacher's posture that he's more than annoyed but glancing at the kids that have gotten rowdier, he just shrugs. "I'll mark this test as failed, but I will write what you have said on your file. If you're found to be lying, be ready for the consequences, brat."

Then he nods at the next kid to go to her place. She nods absently to the teacher, absently sighing in relief at not causing more commotion. Though she can still hear the whispers of the kids commenting about her.

Anyways, HE ignores it, they're children after all.

When Souma arrives at the last place where the test will go through, he realizes that there are more children than in the previous tests. It takes her just a couple of seconds to figure out why. Most of the previous applicants haven't gone home, they are watching the jutsus the ones that come from ninja families are capable of doing.

He just has to wait for ten minutes before it's his turn. When he walks to the center of the training ground, he breathes out before opening the water pouch he has around his waist. Then with slow and Tai chi-like movements, he moves the liquid out until it forms a snake of water in front of him. Then with a sharp move of his hand, it turns into a whip that crashes against the ground, leaving a small trench on it. Then he returns the water that has not turned into mud to his pouch. Then he bows.

"Good showing kid," the teacher says, appreciatively, before writing something on his pad and motioning him the next kid to the center.

And it's over like that. Two good showings and one null. Let's hope for the best.

His parents are waiting outside even when he told them they could return home first. It fills his heart with warmth so he doesn't comment and instead tells them about what he went through.

Is not until a week later, that he's once again in the Academy waiting for her schedule and class number, that she starts feeling nervous.

When a teacher calls out, "Yukihira Souma!" she immediately stands up, easily evading anyone near.

"It's me."

"Good, here. And now go to your classroom."

He gives her a piece of paper and looks down to continue reading the next name when she calls him once again.

"What?"

"Excuse me, but I can't read it, can you read it for me?"

"You don't know how to—whatever. Your class is 1-A. If you want someone to read the schedule part, ask your teacher."

She nods and walks away, knowing he's a bit impatient and rightly so.
