In the time it took to complete Mahito's template completion quest, I went into the forest a few times and experimented on animals, and once I used AoE expansion on a big bear and the template only increased by 1%.

In the graduation exam I took with Kakashi, the template progress increased by 4% with the black flash skill that I used to hit the chunin with anger.
