~Chapter 7~

Max had started talking to me while I was waiting for James. I had put my backpack down because it hurts to sit with a backpack on. "It is a sad thing that it isn't uncommon for babies to be abandoned outside stranger's doors. It is going to be winter soon and it's hard to support a family if you have no home." Max said. "True. It still confuses me how people can do that though." I said. Max nodded. "So what are these little guy's names?" He asked.

"I'm holding Christian and the baby you are holding is Amber," I informed Max. James came back right when I finished telling Max the babies' names. "Okay, Alex and Max I'm back," James said. Max gave him back Amber to hold. "Okay. Well, I'm going back to work James. It was nice meeting, you Alex." Max said. "Okay, so Alex I'm going to ask you a few standard questions. I will also have to do a background check to make sure the babies are in good hands." He said. "I know they are it's just what I have to do if I don't want to get reprimanded," James whispered.

"Okay," I told him. I hope the questions don't take too long to answer. "So first question. What are your name and age?" James asked me. "Alex Caviler and I am twenty-two years old," I told James. "Where do you live and what is your phone number or email?" James asked me. "I live in the apartment complex on Cherry Lane," I said. I grabbed a pen from his pen cup and wrote my number down on a sticky note. "Okay now that we have your contact information. I'm going to ask you some questions about the babies and how you found them. So let's start with how your day was going until you came to the police station. " James said.

"It was a routine day for me. I woke up and played on my phone for a little while. I got ready for school. After making a quick breakfast I left my apartment and knocked on my neighbor's apartment door." I said. James nodded. "Do I have to talk about my walk with you to your work and my college or do you already have that typed up?" I asked James. "You only have to tell me about what happened after I left you," James told me. "Okay," I said.

"So once I went away from my neighbor who left for work I went to college. When I got to my designated room I was early because we had a test. Everything was normal we did our tests and I was on my way to the next class when I got a call. It was from my landlady. She had called to tell me that my neighbors complained of hearing babies crying coming from my apartment. I had typed up an email and sent it to my teacher for the class saying I won't be in class.

Then I went to my apartment." I told him. "So what were you thinking when you got that call from your landlady?" James asked me. "To be honest I don't know. I thought there was a stray animal that got into my apartment but that was unlikely." I told him. "Okay. You can continue your statement now." James said. "So once I got to my apartment I saw the two babies in a basket. They had a note attached that said their first names and to take care of them. In the basket, there was some formula.

I have a friend who is a police officer now a detective. I figured they would be able to help me with the babies. So I got a few baby products and took care of them for a few hours until I came here." I told James. "Okay. Thank you for giving me your statement. Now I have to do a quick background check to make sure you didn't take the babies." James told me. I know James trusts me it's just part of his job. I haven't committed any crimes so I think I'm in the clear.

After staring at his computer screen for five minutes James looked up at me. "I don't see any crimes that you've committed so you are cleared from the basic background check. My work here is done so I'm going to go report to Captian Green real quick and then show you to our Child Protective Services officer." James told me. "I'm going to take you to her now and give you Amber," James said. "Okay," I said before grabbing my backpack. I put on my backpack and adjusted the way I was holding Christian. James led me to the elevator.

We got into the elevator and went to the third floor. "The third floor is where most of the offices are. The first floor is where the police are and the second floor is the courtrooms." James explained to me. "That makes sense," I said as the bell chimed. "I believe it's Nancy who is working today. She is very helpful and will help you if you have any questions." James told me. We walked to the end of the hallway where her office was. There was a name tag on the door that said "Nancy Clem Child Protective Service Officer" I think we are at the right office. James knocked on the door before hearing a cheerful tone say "Come in."
