~Chapter 3~

The time was now eleven o'clock and this is usually the time James goes on break. I sent James a text message. "Hey James, I was wondering if you could stop by my apartment. I have a situation that you might be able to help me with." I sent him the message and I am currently waiting for a response. I didn't hear the cheerful tone I had set for his contact for the next ten minutes. After I got tired of staring at my phone waiting for a message Amber started crying. Since she had already eaten and slept for a while I assumed the next logical thing. She needed her diaper changed. The moment anyone who is a parent or has a baby in their care dreaded. I remember my mother always would say I had the worst diapers to change.

Whenever family friends or family came over, she would embarrass me by telling stories from when I was younger. I think every mother or father did that to their children at one point or another so I didn't get that embarrassed. Christian and Amber were now sleeping on the baby blankets. Then it dawned on me what if I'm not able to find the babies' mother. I am not capable of taking care of two babies between my schedule. Sure I have some parts of the morning where there is no class but then I have to work. Then a knock at my front door grabbed my attention.

I walked over to the door and opened it. It was Ms. Mary checking up on me. "Hello, Ms. Mary. How are you doing today?" I asked her. "I'm doing well Alex. I was just checking up on you to see if everything was alright. It was weird hearing a noise complaint about you since you're one of my best tenants." She told me with a smile. "Yes, everything is fine now. Thank you for checking up on me." I said. "It's not a problem Alex. Since that is all I will be leaving now. Have a nice day." She said before leaving towards the elevator.

I guess James is having a busy day so he didn't get a break. At this rate, I might have to walk down to the precinct with the babies. I hope it will be easy since they are both asleep. I know I bought those baby carriers but it would have been smarter to buy a stroller. Who knows to buy a stroller it probably would have cheaper than two carriers. I went into my bedroom and picked up Amber in one arm and Christan in the other arm. I was just about to shut my apartment door when I heard someone.

"Hey, Alex when did you get those babies?" James asked me. "Oh, what are you doing here?" I asked James. "You do know you were the one who texted me to come to see you right? Did Shakespeare's sonnets mess up your head?" He said while flicking me on the forehead. "Well, you never responded to my message so I didn't know you were coming here," I said. Sometimes he can be so nice than be mean at other times. "Well since you are here, come inside I need to talk to you about something. Would you mind holding Amber for a moment?" I asked James. I didn't want to wait for a response so I just handed him, Amber. I pushed the door and walked back inside my apartment. I slipped off my shoes and sat down on the sofa in my living slash dining room.

"What would you say if I told you I have no clue who these babies belong to. That they were just some stranger's babies?" I asked James. "Well, I would be hoping that you didn't kidnap someone's children because then I would have to take you into the police station," James replied. "I would also hope my friend isn't a criminal and that they have a good explanation. So do you have a good explanation for these babies right here Alex?" James said. "Okay, so long story short. I found them outside my apartment door when I got a noise complaint from a neighbor when I was at class. I figured you would know what to do so that is why I texted you to come here. So can you tell me what to do?" I asked James.

"Well for starters you need to fill out a report for the police department and then we try to find their parents or relatives. I can tell you right now though the social workers might not have space or employees available to take care of two babies. How about we have lunch together and you can be my first case when I'm off the break." James told me. "That sounds like it will work. Do you want anything specific for lunch?" I asked him. "Maybe some soup if you have any. If you don't we could probably go and get some subs at the store." James suggested. "I don't think I have any soup but I will probably get some soon. Want to play rock, paper, scissors to see who has to go get the subs." I said. James nodded and put out his fist. In my head, I said 'rock, paper, scissors, shoe!' I put out scissors and James put rock. "Okay. Do you think you'll be able to take care of Amber and Christan while I'm gone?" I asked him.

"I think I'll be fine and I can always call you if I need help." He said, giving me his signature smile. "I don't know if you'll be able to hold Amber and Christian for how long I'll be gone. If you need to you can put them down on my bed but make sure to keep a close eye on them." I said as I handed him, Christian. I went over and put my shoes back on. "What kind of sub do you want?" I asked James. "A meatball sub please," James said. I nodded and grabbed my wallet while walking out. I hope there aren't a lot of students at the store since it's lunchtime for them and James is on a tight schedule. Meanwhile, I have all day. I opened the shop's door and surprisingly there were only two people in there and they were eating. I walked up to the counter and we had a normal conversation like a customer and worker.

The lady asked me what I wanted and I told them my order. Then there was the "How is your day going?" question. Everyone replies good even if it's bad and then you ask them how their day is a common courtesy. It took only five minutes for her to make the two subs and then I was walking back to my apartment. I also got some cookies and chips with the subs. I was debating whether I should have gotten a meatball sub like James but I didn't. Instead, I got a chicken teriyaki sub. I love their subs but they always add too much dressing to the subs. I usually like to take the stairs up to my apartment because I don't get very much exercise other than taking the stairs. I opened the apartment door and James wasn't on the sofa so he probably is in my room.

"Hey I got the food," I said. I put the bag on the table and walked into my room. Christian was shaking his rattle and Amber was sleeping in one of the blankets. "Hey" James replied.
