1 Chapter 1 - Why Me?

Xiao Zhan's POV:

It happened in the morning, on the day of the math examination.

~~~~
The sharp ringing of the school bell cut through the air signaling the end of morning assembly.
The lecturer commanded us to put our bags in front and get ready to start the exam.
Swiftly raising my hand to get the lecturers attention, I rose from my seat along with all the other students who scrambled to the front to drop their bags.
"May I go to the bathroom, please?"
Though, I was given an irritated glare, a small nod of approval granted my wish.
My close friend, Oscar gave me a smile when he saw me walk up the stairs to the back of lecture room.
"Hey Hotshot, getting nervous before an exam again? Did you drink too much water?" he teased me.
"Shut up Oskie! I always go to the bathroom before exams, you know that." I shot back, restraining myself from smacking his head.
"I hope your nervousness does not affect your performance in the exam too much." he said in all seriousness.
My heart felt touched by his words so I gave him a soft smile and assured him, "Aww Oskie, don't worry. I am f-"
"Not that your performance would be any better without your nervousness. I mean, you were bad before. Will you like get a single digit this time!" Oskie cut off my words, laughing, making me regret I ever opened my mouth to thank him.
Just as I was going to whack the back of Oskie's head, the lecturer threw her whiteboard marker at the back of my head.
Sick aim, I must say.
"Sean Xiao! The exam is going to commence! No talking is allowed! You are in a Polytechnic already! Should you not know the rules by now?! Either you go to the toilet now or you get back to your seat at this instant!"
The class let out a bunch of silent giggles causing the lecturer so give them a harsh glare too.
Before I could shamefully make my way out of the lecture room, Oscar grabbed my wrist holding me back.
He looked into my eyes with a serious demeanor and whispered, "Good Luck".
Before I could wonder what happened with my carefree friend, he resumed to his usual state, a smile curling on his face as he released his grip on my wrist.
With that, I winked at him whispering a quiet 'Good Luck' back and walked out of the lecture room.
~~~~

I trudged slowly to the washroom at the end of the hallway, with every step the words of teachers reading the exam rules drowning out more and more.

I stopped in front of the bathroom and stared into void darkness.

The lights were off.

I then proceeded to stick only my hand into the bathroom hoping for the light sensor to detect my motion.

I was pretty sure how ridiculous I must have looked like but I definitely was not going to step into a dark bathroom with my safety at stake.

When the lights finally flickered on, I walked into a cubicle and started my business.

I should have predicted what was going to happen next because it was not the first time bathroom lights switched off with no alarm while I was still in the toilet.

Left with no choice, I grabbed the toilet roles which were laying next to me in abundant numbers, for some weird reason, and started throwing them from my cubicle all over the bathroom in hope that the sensor would activate again.

However, within seconds everything got worse.

The door of the bathroom, that stood wide open and provided the last source of light for me to be able to see my hands, was suddenly slammed shut.

I finally understood why we, men, urinated while standing and that was because escaping from creepy situations like these by running away was extremely convenient.

I let out the most unmanliest scream possible, pulled up my pants, pried open the cubicle door and dashed to where I presumed the exit was.

I stumbled and tripped over my own feet a few times before I grasped the handle of the washroom door and pushed it down.

I pushed the door open with marked difficulty and only when I got all my body parts out of that washroom safely, did I slam my back against the door and slowly slide down to the floor.

My eyes were still pursed close, sweat was dripping down my face and my heart was beating at what seemed like two hundred beats per second.

I was trying hard not to choke on the air I was sharply breathing in, as I was not ready to die just yet.

Giving a little whimper of relief, I opened my eyes to face yet another shocking sight that left me in great distortion.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it. Leave a vote or a comment to make me smile :)
