5 Change of Plans

I turned around, startled, and my brown eyes met twinkling blue ones. "Krys mama!" I hugged her willowy figure tightly. "Weren't you moving to Oklahoma? Why are you back in Tennessee?" She pulled me out to arms length and smiled.

"I WAS in Oklahoma. But this stupid small town keeps pulling me back." I was so glad to see her. She was my only female friend and we've been together since I first moved to town when I was in the sixth grade. She'd suddenly had to move away and I had no way to contact her. I remembered screaming to the heavens at the unfairness of the world. But now she's here and everything will be okay. The only thing that would have made this even better was if Richie was here too. I updated her on everything that had happened while she was gone. "So.... you're dating Richie now?" she summarized, "And on top of that, tonight was supposed to be your first date but he flaked out on you?" I nodded, slightly disappointed since he was the one who initiated this. "That's okay Zu Chima! You can come and be my date instead! I'm going to watch Speed Racer! Come on! You already got the ticket so you might as well watch SOMETHING and not lose out!" So we go into the room showing the movie.

About halfway through the movie I remembered I still had my mom's phone so I told Krys that I needed to go into the other room and give my mom back her phone. We waited until the person watching the doors left before sneaking into the other theater room and give my mom her phone. I take a second to watch the movie they were seeing and feel slight disappointment. I had been reading the book series on this and the movie was doing it complete justice. I wished I was watching this instead of Speed. I sighed and got up from my seat. Even if I wanted to watch this, spending time with Krys was more important. I haven't seen her in over half a year after all.

When I met her outside the door, she told me she needed to step outside for a breather so we both went outside the theater to sit and just talk for a bit. After, we trudged back inside and finished the movie. Even though it was a good night, it still wasn't the night I was hoping for. I regrouped with my mom, brothers, and sister and we all drove back home.

Dinner that night was a rambunctious affair like usual and my brothers were telling me the awesome scenes that I'd missed, making me even more disappointed that I'd not seen the movie. After dinner, I asked mom a little guiltily if she enjoyed the move as well and apologized to her for not sticking with her like I'd promised. She said it was okay and that she enjoyed the viewing. She then pushed me gently to my room and told me to do my homework since it was late already. I did my homework then read my book until I fell asleep on the bed with my little sister beside me, overall feeling a little guilty but definitely more like a normal American teen.
