8 Sorting

Dumbeldore POV.

Ahh, finally it is time for Hadrian to arrive. I still remember his shenanigans from when he was a year old. I only hope he hasn't deviated from the light but considering the rumors that the new neutral faction is headed by the boy who lives and the escaped prisoner fo azakaban, I have nothing to worry about.

The children have already seatedand are waiting for the new batch of first years. Just when I was about to see what was taking so long, the door opened in dramatic fashion and I saw Mcgonagall followed by Hadrian but the curious thing was that the rest of the student body was looking up to him. What had happened in the 3 minutes it took for Mcgonagall to enter?

Harry POV

I walked down the hallways of the great hall as the rest of the student body followed me like sheep. I saw Dumbeldore adopt a curious face as the hat started singing in this horrendous voice.

"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

"Well Mr.hat, I would have thought that you would have to wait for the teachers and the students before starting to sing. But let us begin the sorting." I said as I stopped walking, and the entire first year population behind me.

"Well I made an exception this time but as you can see. We are wasting time, let us begin".

"Arrogant brat." I could hear the mutter all the way from Snape's chair on the teachers row, and our eyes met in a clash. Not a word was exchanged but we never looked away. Both our faces were completely stone cold but both of us looked away at the same time after staring for an awkwardly long period of 3 seconds.

Mcgonagall cleared her throat before explaining about the basics of the houses that I tuned out and focused on observing the entire hall. The movies never did this place properly but the entire building, especially the grey hall, was dominated by a dense magical air. Not a oppressive or an active aura either, it was a welcoming passive aura of magic that made you feel like hogwarts is a home.

"Potter, Hadrian"

I was snapped out of my mental conversation as Mcgonagall called out my name. There were many gasps but I ignored them as I sat down on the stool, it was pretty uncomfortable so I took the liberty of changing it into a chair fit for a prince as it had armrests and a comfy and smooth lining.

I could see draco clenching his fist after remembering our little talk in the hallways just before the sorting itself and hermione looking at me like a weird and exotic puzzle while Hannah and Susan were the only ones who weren't suprised.

"Mr. Potter. What are you doing?" I heard a squeaky but excited voice from the teachers tables ask me.

"Well the stool was uncomfortable and pretty dirty so I made it better. Is that a problem?"

"No none at all, though I hope we could discuss this in detail later." Dumbeldore intercepted with grace and finesse that he built up from years of politics.

Mcgonagall cleared her throat as she was about to place the old but moldy hat on my head but she was intercepted again but this time by the very artifact she was holding.

"Do you mind?" He asked me politely.

"Not in the least." I whipped out "a" wand and casted a quick scorgify without a chant and any wand movement.

No other words were exchanged before he was placed onto my head.

(Note- '.....' is for mental conversations)

'Well, what do we have here? A mental defense so strong? Do you mind lowering it?'

'Well, yes I do mind. I don't like anyone poking around my mind especially artifacts older than most civilizations and noble families.'

'I am sworn to secrecy'

'That doesn't mean you are entitled to dive into my mind. How about a compromise?'

'Sure. I will ask one question, what are your opinions on the houses?'

'Well each houses values are either incomplete or misinterpreted and mistreated'

'Really? Could you elaborate' (Bit of a philosophical rant that you can skip if you want.)

'Yes. Gryffindor's value of bravery is not complete without caution and humility. He was a great man who ,while prideful, was smart enough to work hard and know when it is time to acknowledge his faults. Modern gryffindors are bullheads who have no sense of self reflection or humility and a gain ego. In the words of student slang, they are "Mindless idiots with no preservation instincts"

Hufflepuffs values are also incomplete without equality and the ability to agree to disagree. She was a great woman who believed in equality and included everyone who worked hard but she knew some people will excel and dragging them down would be bad for them. Modern hufflepuffs discourage any sort of uniqueness in favor of false unity. They believe anyone not practicing their views as an opponent or disloyal. In essence they are "Mindless groups of the leftovers"

Ravenclaw values have been misinterpreted the worst. Instead of sharing knowledge or propagating new innovation, ravenclaw shave become people who learn for marks and not for the knowledge. They learn to show their superiority, not to increase or share knowledge or even to learn something new. A,so I know that you will probably our me in ravenclaw cause only a ravenclaw would analyze the house system so much. In essence the ravenclaw are the "teachers pets who view others as of lower worth."

Slytherin was the worst in terms of misinterpretation. His value was of cunning but his house has been reduced to crybaby's who wouldn't know cunning if it *********. They are just crybaby's who don't truly understand the world but believe themselves to be the best of the best for being born. In essence they are the "backstabbing dark morons."

So in summary the houses are a fraction of what they were supposed to be. Also they are divided into different schools. The intent of the creators was a family of children where their house was just a trait that they had in highest quantity. They wanted a smart, loyal, brave and cunning student. Not a mindless child who thinks the other houses to be worse than his own.'

'Well that was quite a rant but I have decided you belong in...
