18 Where It All Started

Alexis was around two years old when Melissa had sensed a rather extraordinary fact about her daughter. Her daughter had started showing the signs of superhuman ability. When other children of her age were just learning to say simple words and small sentences, Alexis was already able to speak fluently in perfect sentences and carry out conversation with adults.

Not only was she fast in learning new things, she was also stronger as compared to other children of her age. Once, when Alexis was throwing tantrum because she did not get to eat her favorite candy, she grabbed Melissa by her foot and pulled her, causing Melissa to fall down on her back. After this incident, Melissa tried her best so as not to make Alexis angry.

There was another time when Melissa left Alexis alone in her room for a few minutes. And when she opened the door she could not find Alexis anywhere in the room. She looked under the bed, behind the cupboard, in the closet, but Alexis was nowhere to be found. And when Melissa's eyes fell on the single-piece cabinet that was attached high on the wall, she could not believe what she saw.

Alexis was sleeping soundly in that cabinet. And Melissa could not comprehend how her daughter could get inside there. There were no ladders or other things that her little daughter could have used to climb to that cabinet, unless she flew over there.

After Alexis completed her second birthday, Melissa admitted her daughter in the day care center nearby the hospital she worked in. She would drop Alexis to the day care and then go the hospital. Then when she completed her duty, she would take Alexis back with her.

Alexis was a very outgoing kid and she had already made a best friend in her day care center. Her best friend's name was Judy Fortin. They got along really well with each other. They would sit together in the class, they would share their lunch with each other, they would play together, and they would laugh and cry together.

Unfortunately their friendship did not last very long. One day, when the two of them were playing in the day care center, a shiny spaceship caught both of their eyes. Both of them wanted that same toy and they started to fight over it. Alexis, being stronger than Judy, pulled the spaceship from Judy's hand and pushed her.

Alexis did not mean to do any harm to her friend but she did not realize that she was stronger. Her little push made her friend slide two meters away and hit her head on the wall. After seeing what she did to her friend, Alexis started to tremble and suddenly felt pain all over her body.

Alexis sat down and curled up by holding her legs with her hands. She tried to resist the agony but the pain kept on growing. There were no caretakers around so she called her best friend in a voice full of pain, "Judy, help me!" Then she started to glow in azure color. She screamed for a while and then fainted.

Though Judy hit her head on the wall, she wasn't unconscious. She was witnessing the changes that Alexis was going through and then she whispered, "Alien!" After saying this, her eyes started to become blurry and then she fell unconscious.

After a while the caretakers found both the girls knocked out in the playroom and then took them to the hospital. Melissa got a call saying that her daughter was found unconscious. They were brought to the hospital that Melissa worked in as it was near to that day care center. She inquired to the caretaker about what happened but the caretaker had no answer.

Melissa went to visit Judy as both of them had fainted at the same time. Judy was already up and talking, "Hi! Melissa. Is Lexi fine?" Melissa smiled and tousled Judy's hair and said, "She is still sleeping. Are you ok?" Judy nodded her head and said, "She pushed me. And she glowed."

Melissa smiled nervously and asked, "What do you mean she glowed?" Judy simply said, "Glowed blue. Is she alien?" Melissa felt goose bumps all over her body. But she nervously smiled at Judy and said, "You must have dreamt it. Lexi is just like you, she is human."

Melissa had a colleague from planet GN-07, who was one of the Healers. She was also a good friend of Melissa with whom Melissa shared her troubles and sadness. After a few days of the incident, Melissa took Alexis to her Healer friend, Inara. Inara was very tall and slender. She had almond shaped eyes with violet colored pupils which almost looked like amethyst gemstone. Anyone who looked into her violet eyes would get intoxicated in her beauty.

"You seem troubled, Melissa", Inara said in her low, soothing voice. Melissa took a deep breath and revealed, "I think Alexis has superhuman abilities."

"What kind of abilities?" Inara leaned forward as she was curious about Alexis. She had never come across any humans with abilities.

Melissa clutched her hand together and mustered up courage to talk about her daughter's condition, "I always knew she was a fast learner and she was very strong for her age. But according to her friend, she glowed blue. And I suspect that she can even fly."

Inara raised her brows in amusement and touched her chin with her long fingers, "Hmm… Did her father show any of those abilities when he was with you?"

Melissa's face turned grimmer when Inara mentioned about Alexis's father, "He was stronger than normal humans, but other than that he did not have any abilities."

Inara thought for a while and then concluded, "Your daughter must be one of a kind then, a case of rare genetic mutation. What do you want me to do?"

Melissa felt a sting in her heart that she was going to ask this but she thought that this might be the only way to let her daughter have a normal and happy life, "Can you seal off her powers somehow? I don't want her to be found out and then treated as a test subject by the government."

Inara had a soft smile on her face and then nodded, "I understand your situation as a mother. So, I'll help you. I'll seal off her mutated cells from manifesting. If she can avoid extreme emotions then her powers might never break through."

Melissa's eyes sparkled with hope, "Thank you! Inara, I'll forever be indebted to you."
