20 Extended Prologue | Part 19

Two massive earth spikes rose from the ground going towards Dabi like a living snake. Dabi used his flames to propel himself upwards, missing the first one, as he started running on it. The other one crashed into the first spike destroying it, Dabi was quick to move away with the help of his flames, but some of the derbies smashed into him mid-air making him fall on a rooftop.

Kai seeing an opportunity hurdled up small earth rubbles throwing them in air. Dabi was a bit confused at first, but he felt the horror of the situation later when saw the ground twisting into small earth spike snakes moving towards him. They weren't that strong, but were huge in number. Dabi would have moved upwards but the rubbles from the sky came down making him hard to use his ability.

Dabi was mostly on the losing end, as he was trying to counter Kai's ability. Still, he was holding on, but the wounds started building up.

He needed to attack Overhaul directly, so he moved towards him with his flames giving him speed. Overhaul seeing his opponent get near surged a massive number of earth spikes towards him.

Dabi didn't have time to dodge all of them, and worse enough he was still midair, with his flames on his feet, making his way towards Overhaul.

Kai Chisaki smirked, Checkmate.

But he was wrong.

"Prominence Burn." Dabi's voice came. And the night sky just for a second witnessed a second sun. A blue sun.

The destruction of his flames destroyed the surrounding area. All the glasses in the neighborhood shattered due to the huge explosion and the earth quaked for a second.

Time seems to slow down for Chisaki as he saw the living Blue ember make his way towards him. For the first time in his life, Chisaki felt fear. The man unconsciously took a step back.

But Dabi was already there, his hand a few feet away from Overhaul's face. "Fire-flash Fist: Jet Burn." There was a huge wave of blue flames as it burned everything in sight to ashes.

Even Dabi was propelled backwards due to his own flames. With a few bounces, he fell onto the ashen ground. His breathing was ragged, almost out of air.

He smiled weakly, so that worked. He looked down on his own body finding it hard to believe that his clothes didn't catch fire. The agency sure knew their stuff. At least he wouldn't have to go back naked.

But the moment only lasted for a while, before Dabi heard an angry gruff. His eyes widened as he held his head up, with much difficulty to look at his opponent.

Standing there was something that only could be described as a huge pile of flesh, bulbing around and taking shape of a humanoid monster. There was no sight of Overhaul or his two associates, standing in their place was a ten-foot monstrosity that had four arms thick as logs, and a bird mask covering their face.

The creature looked at Dabi with angry red eyes as it slammed the ground. Hundreds of earth spikes erupted from below making their way towards their target.

Dabi looked in horror as he saw them coming. 'Move' He said to himself. 'Move damn it.' But his body jumped back, avoiding a few, but he wasn't going to make it in time to dodge them all.

They were fast and large in number. Even though they didn't follow him like before there were too many to avoid.

He gritted his teeth for another surge of pain, as he fired off another 'Prominence Burn.'

It was far less smaller than the previous one. But it did the job. But this time Overhaul or what was left of him didn't stop. As continues barrage of attacks landed on Dabi.

But the flame user didn't stop as he kept jumping back using his flames to gain distance in short bursts. His whole body felt like hell due to using 'Prominence Burn,' he needed to cool off. Or he might just pass out from the heat.

But before he could, suddenly he tripped and fell.

The ground beneath Dabi moved itself as it threw the fire user mid-air. A few of the earth spikes followed him, landing blows that tossed him out of the area. One of the spikes even managed to pierce his lungs almost making him loose his vision.

As he was falling his life flashed before his eyes, he knew this was the end. But at least Eri was safe.

But a sudden cry brought back Dabi's consciousness. Even while falling he followed the source of the cry as it landed on Eri. Who was being rough handled by Overhaul's subordinate. The man was pulling her up on a cargo ship, that was moving away from the city.

So they had already people stationed there. Dabi's worst thought came true.

He failed. He failed the mission. He failed himself. But most importantly he failed Eri.

Even as he crashed into the sea, he fired off a shot towards the ship. It should be able to signal any hero if they got the message. But even that was his wishful thinking.

Regret ate up his last ember of life. The last thing he remembered doing was a small attack on the cargo ship's engine. Before the sea buried him.
