Today’s The Day

With deep shuddering breaths Jason takes in his surroundings confirming what he already knows. It was just a dream. Looking over at a clock that reads 2:00 am he groans. "Why today of all days?" The nightmare is one that he's had since that day eleven years ago.

"Why'd I have to remember him like that?" He mumbles to himself. He gets out of bed, knowing he won't fall asleep anytime soon, and goes to shower.

Once he's showered and dressed he leaves the house and goes on a walk to clear his head. He needs to be ready for the entrance test to get into the hero academy today. Everyone knows about Japan's UA and Shiketsu, well America has Fort Lewis High School in the west and Regis High School in the east.

The acceptance rates for Fort Lewis and Regis are low. About one in every three hundred. And there are supposed to be around twelve thousand applicants over the next few weeks and Jason will be one of them. The entrance exams change every few years so you don't alway know what you'll get. There is obviously the written portion but there is also the test to see your potential as a hero.

As Jason walks and contemplated what he has to do the sun begins to rise so he turns around and heads home.

As he enters his family home he can hear smell the cooking bacon, hear the knife hit the cutting board in quick succession and as he enters the kitchen he sees his mom. Busily preparing a meal for him on such an important day.

"Hi sweetie. I thought you were still in bed. Where did you go?" His mom asks.

"I had a nightmare... about dad." The chopping of vegetables slows a bit "So I went to clear my head ya know."

"I see. You know son. He would be very proud of you." She says somberly. "Anyways how many of your friends are applying?"

"Well, George and Lillian are the only ones. Hopefully we make it in. I want to follow in dads footsteps."

"I'm sure you'll all do great. Now hurry up and eat so we can get you to the entrance exams." She says as she places a plate of hash browns, eggs, and bacon.

Jason scarfs it down in record time then gets up and cleans his dishes. "Don't forget we have to pick both Lillian and George today."

"Then you'd better get moving. There only an hour till the exams." She gently pushes him towards the bathroom with a laugh.

Now in the bathroom Jason looks in the mirror. He has a scar taking up most of the right side of his face and part of his neck from the day his dad died. His brown hair comes from his mom but his blue eyes and strong jaw he got from his dad.

After he goes about brushing his teeth and cleaning his face. Stepping out of the bathroom "Ok mom I'm ready to go."

"Alright let's go then. Who's closer George or Lillian?"

"George is. His family just moved a few streets away. Lillian is closer to Fort Lewis."

"Then off we go."
