A friendly competition, part 2

The hall prepared for the Games' participants to show off their skills could, indeed, have been a training hall. It had much fewer embellishments than any other part of Belpaese's tower that Cael had seen until now, and much stronger protections.

The net of magic on its walls was visible with the naked eye. Several mages were throwing spells at it as Irmilla and the group she led entered.

Before Cael's eyes, a pulsing white ball of energy hit the wall with great force. The mana in that ball would've been enough, likely, to break the thick stone the wall was made of; but the net of protective magic caught the spell with ease.

Cael noted the elegance with which it has done so. Unlike the protective spells in his father's tower, this net didn't just let hostile spells break over it and spread their mana all over. Instead, it seemed to unravel the weave they were made from, and spread their mana over the entire net.
