Chapter 59: Wolf Pack Invasion
The town could no longer be defended.
Clark gripped his longbow tightly, staring at the mass of wolves outside. His jaw was clenched, and his expression was filled with anguish. Those damned magical beasts were almost upon the walls, and he felt utterly powerless against them.
He turned his head, looking at the militiamen beside him, who were already in a pitiful state. Although the walls offered some protection, the flames spewed by the black wolves had still burned many. These magical flames were nearly fatal for ordinary people.
"This place is done for."
Clark sighed deeply, then turned his gaze to a young girl not far from him. She had golden curls, and the pure white robe she wore was now stained with deep red blood and dust. Yet, despite this, she continued to try to heal the wounded around her.
The girl extended her hand, and a faint white glow soon appeared, enveloping the injured, dispelling the black mist clinging to their bodies. Under the illumination of this holy light, the once pained expressions of the wounded gradually became peaceful. But Clark knew this was merely a drop in the bucket.
"Little girl, leave this place!"
Clark sighed again, looking at the girl beside him. "You still have time. There's no need for you to die here with us! This is our home, but you're just a traveler!"
"But I am a priestess, a priestess of the Temple of Order!"
Hearing Clark's words, the golden-haired girl wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes and shook her head. Her voice was a bit hoarse, even trembling slightly, but still, she refused to leave.
"Protecting order and fighting chaos is my duty! I will never flee from the battlefield!"
"Ah..."
Hearing her reply, Clark sighed again. He raised his longbow and looked down once more. By now, the black wolves had already reached the base of the wall. They raised their heads, opening their mouths wide, and spewed forth crimson flames.
The scorching heat rushed toward them, forcing Clark to retreat, barely avoiding the skin-melting temperatures. But even so, the stone walls beside him, built with so much effort, began to soften under the intense flames, melting like butter.
"Damn it!"
Seeing this, Clark's face darkened. These black wolves were not ordinary beasts but magical creatures. On this continent, magical beasts were essentially creatures mutated by chaotic magic. Their attacks were not purely physical; in fact, each strike carried the power of chaos.
Anyone struck by them would be instantly infected by chaotic magic, dying a miserable death and turning into a monster. If it weren't for this priestess of the Temple of Order lodging here by chance, the town wouldn't have held out this long. It would have been utterly destroyed in the first wave of the black wolves' attack.
But now...
"You two, take her away immediately!"
Clark made a swift decision, signaling to two soldiers beside him and giving them a stern order. "This young lady is a priestess of the temple and must not be harmed! Take her to the docks immediately and board the Red Fish."
He continued, "Remember, even at the cost of your lives, you must ensure her safety. Understood?!"
"Yes, sir!"
The two soldiers nodded at Clark's command, then approached the priestess, intending to help her up. But when the priestess realized their intentions, her expression changed dramatically.
"You can't do this! If we just hold on, there will be help. You can't give up..."
"Thank you, miss, but we know there's no point in holding on any longer."
Facing the priestess's words, Clark gave a bitter smile. "Sweetwater Town is just a small place. Even if we sent out a call for help, it's unlikely that reinforcements could be spared from the frontlines."
He continued, "To be honest, I'm deeply grateful to you. Because of your presence, we were able to evacuate everyone else. Otherwise, the town would have fallen on the first night of the black wolves' attack."
"But now, our families are safe. We have no regrets. Let us fight for our home until the very end!"
"You all..."
Hearing this, the priestess bit her lip, not knowing what to say. Clark turned his back to her, drawing his bow again, aiming at the wolves below.
"Go now! You saved our families; now it's time for us to repay that. Miss, you're still young. You have a long life ahead of you!"
"But..."
The priestess clearly wanted to say more, but by now, the two soldiers had reached her. Seeing their determined yet pale faces, she hesitated.
She reached out, tightly gripping her staff, as if pondering something.
But just then, an unexpected event occurred!
"Awoooo—!"
A sharp howl echoed, covering the entire town. Hearing this sound, both Clark and the priestess turned their heads toward its source.
To their shock, they saw a massive black wolf on a small hill not far behind the pack, howling at the sky.
"The alpha wolf..."
Seeing the enormous black wolf, two to three meters tall, Clark's face instantly turned ashen. The longbow in his hand slipped and fell to the ground with a thud.
As a seasoned hunter from the northern regions, he knew all too well how terrifying an alpha wolf could be. Yet, even Clark had never seen a real alpha wolf before.
In the North, black wolves were nothing more than a legend whispered beside children's pillows and a concern in hunters' conversations. But when faced with one in reality, it was an entirely different sight.
"Awoooo—!"
As the alpha wolf howled, the chaotic black wolves below raised their heads, howling in response. Their assault became even more ferocious!
"Boom!"
The black wolves hurled themselves at the wall, disregarding their own safety. They charged at the wall like mad creatures, even if it meant smashing their heads bloody.
The black wolves' bodies were incredibly tough, so these impacts didn't cause them any real harm.
But for the militiamen on the walls, this was the last straw. The walls beneath their feet began to shake violently under the wolves' relentless assault.
A few unfortunate men lost their balance and fell off the walls. They didn't even have time to scream before they were caught mid-air by the leaping black wolves, who tore them to pieces.
Seeing this, the priestess's expression hardened. She gripped her staff tightly, her eyes flickering as she watched the horrific scene unfold.
When she saw the militiamen being torn apart, a determined look flashed in her eyes. She seemed to make a decision, clutching her staff to her chest.
But just at that moment, a beam of holy white light suddenly descended from the sky.
