Dealing with the Police

Since they all agreed to join me I decided not to punish them. They were now part of my organization and if they stepped out of line again I would deal with them myself.

So I made this clear to them, "From now on you represent the organization so if I see or hear anything about how you are abusing your power you will have to deal with me got it?"

They all nodded their heads. I turned to Mary and asked, "What do you want to do with your brother? I mean he's definitely a danger to those around him."

"Considering how he has been acting I'm not sure that he can be trusted to roam free. Plus with his showing of power in the fight this morning he will definitely be recognized by the police."

Mary thought for a moment and said, "I don't like him but he is my brother and I don't want him to die. His distinctive power will be difficult to hide, I think mom knows about it already."

"I'm not sure how many other people he has shown it to. And I agree he is way too dangerous to simply be let free."

She turned to my new minions and asked, "Do you anybody else that knows my brother can make a fire? Has he shown off to other people?"

Donald said, "I think some of the rival gang members know, he hurt some of them really bad soon after he came back from the mission."

Mary sighed, "So they will definitely turn him in if they haven't already done so. So he probably will have to give to the police if we don't want to hide him for the rest of his life."

I looked at her in silence allowing her to make the hard decision. It was something really personal to her and allowed me an insight into her character to see how she dealt with stress.

Mary continued mulling it over, "If I gave him over to the cops they would have to keep him constantly bound or he would break out with his fire manipulation skills."

I nodded and said, "Even then he may be able to escape. I mean we don't know what he still has in his inventory. And he will probably tell on his accomplices, our new members of the organization."

She sighed before deciding, "I will take away some of my brother's senses. That will make it so that even if he does escape he will never become a threat to the civilian population.

"Plus hopefully if we turn him in ourselves after we did that to him will cool most of the anger of the cops so they won't kill him in his cell."

"As for him telling on the new members of our group. I think we can say that they were pressed into service after he went mad with power. It was pretty close to what actually happened."

After hearing our final verdict, Terrence summoned another knife trying to free himself but every time he did that I just kicked it away.

He strained and wiggled trying to get loose but Mary walked beside him with tears in her eyes saying, "I will make it as unobtrusive as possible don't worry."

Then she laid her hand on him and nothing seemed to happen for a minute. Terrance stop struggling confused by his senses seeming to be normal.

I asked, "What did you do with him?"

Mary replied, "I drastically weakened his sense of balance and dynamic vision, his ability to track fast-moving objects."

"Now if he tries anything more complicated than walking his likely to fall in the process and he can't even track a regular speed punch aiming for his face. His fighting days are done for."

I raised my eyebrow in surprise. She was able to so easily target specific senses, like the balance that I am pretty sure Jack hadn't done. She was adapting to her new fruit very fast.

She had also made a good call. What she did probably would affect his day-to-day life that much other than falling more often but it crippled his ability to ever fight properly again.

I said, "That was impressive. I didn't even know you could target those senses with the devil fruit I gave you. You also made his punishment as minimally painful as possible."

She nodded still crying. I sighed and said to my 3 minions, "Load him up to the back of the pickup. We're heading back to town, no use delaying the inevitable."

We were driving back to town and I left the 3 of them on the outskirts. I didn't want the police to get too angry at them before we managed to convince them of their innocence. If not they could run away.

I knew that they were cowardly they saw what Mary could do and knew that if they left the police would hound them no matter where they would go.

I had emphasized to them my displeasure at what would happen to them if they left so I was pretty sure they would stay. If not then that would suck but I could like with it,

So we drove to the police station, some people staring at the struggling Terrence in the back of the pickup but not doing anything. Ahh, the apathy of humans is the only thing you can really trust.

Once we got off the truck we entered the police station, Mary drying up her tears and me carrying Terrence on my shoulder.

One police officer came and asked, "Hey, hey, what's going on here? Who is that you're carrying over your shoulder?"

I said, "The lady next to me is Mary she is the little sister of the man I am carrying over my shoulder. Terrance here was the man who killed officer Simon this morning."

That shocked the whole police department awake. But I didn't really hold it against them I mean if a man carrying a bound-up man into the police department near midnight you would be wary.

The Police Captian Mark, the one with Archive Magic, walked up to us and said, "Is that so boyo. Why do you have him bound over your shoulder then."

I said the lie we came up with along the way here, "Mary was worried that Terrence was too volatile and would hurt her and her family."

"She found out that that he was pressganging his friends to the robbery this morning and wanted to force them to attack this station with him tonight."

"So she called me and we took him down before he could do that. Mary also made sure that he was no longer a threat to the civilian population."

The police chief narrowed his eyes, "Why didn't she call the police? And what do mean making sure that he was no longer a threat?"

"Well," I said, "she was worried that with emotions running hot from the death of officer Simon this morning Terrence here might meet his untimely end by an angry police officer."

That statement sent a ripple through the police officer, most of them mad that Mary had even been worried about the situation but I notice some of them were disappointed at being able to do just that.

"So," I continued, "she came to me and we took him down. Mary here has the ability to take and enhance the sense of people she comes in contact with."

"So she took her brother's sense of balance and dynamic vision. He is now much weaker. He can still be dangerous so that is why we brought him to you."

The police captain nodded and after looking at the heartbroken Mary soften his expression, "It's been hard on you hasn't it?"

"I know wanting to protect your brother might have been your first instinct but you did well in taking him to us. I will make sure that nothing untoward happens to him."

Mary nodded. And I breathed an internal sigh of relief. They seem to buy the story. I was worried someone here would have some type of Sherlock Holmes type skill and figure me out.

So I had made sure to lie in my statement of events. I had stretched the truth a little but it was overall a pretty accurate description of what actually happened.

They brought us into a room and the police captain said, "You can hand off Terrence to officer Micheals there. Well, let me introduce myself my name is Laurance Smith the captain of this police station."

"Can you tell me more about the 3 men that he pressganged into working for him? We would like some corroborating evidence to what happened."

I nodded, "They aren't here they were afraid that you would lock them up here without hearing them out. Their names are Zack, Ian, and Donald, don't know their last names."

Laurance nodded his head and said, "Was it you that made all that racket before, we could see the jets of fire and lasers from here."

I nodded my head, "That was us. It was pretty hectic trying to subdue him but it worked out in the end."

He nodded his head, "What happened in the 3-hour gap before you came back to the police station?"

"Well," I said, "As I mentioned Mary was wary of giving over but after some deliberation, she decided to do the right thing."

The rest of the interview continued like that with me answering most of the questions and Mary staying silent.

I have to admit, Seimei Kikan was useful when it came to lying. I could control exactly how my face would look and I stopped my body from producing adrenaline and keeping calm.

Once that was over I saw my 3 minions also being questioned by the cops. Seems like they are competent. One of them must have used some type of scrying spell to find them.

They seemed to be doing well on their own. A life of petty crime must have led them to be pretty good at lying.

After that, we were led to the prison where they kept Terrence. Laurance looked at Mary and said, "I am sorry to say this but can you repeat what you did to Terrence to some of our other prisoners."

"With superpowers, it makes it much harder to keep them contained and 1 of them has already escaped. We need to make sure that none of them are a threat to society ever again."

Mary froze before nodding and we were led to 3 prisoners each bound in heavy chains. Mary walked up to each of them and touch them taking away their balance and dynamic vision.

Once that was taken care of the police officer led us back to the lobby and Laurance said, "Thank you for doing that miss Mary, and I would also like to thank you once more for capturing Terrence."

I smiled. Not only had we dealt with the situation with none of us getting implicated we now had a pretty good reputation with the cops a win-win.

If I'm honest though, the cops probably know that they are being lied to a little with all the ranting I hear Terrence doing but they seemed to be too stressed to actually think I was worth pursuing.

Considering that they had 4 prisoners and 1 escaped after only the first day after the mission, I could see why they would think so.

So I looked at the Laurance and said, "I know that you are under a lot of pressure right now with the emergence of superpowers and whatnot."

"How about you allow us to make a neighborhood watch. I would help if some of the more powerful members of the population could help deal with this epidemic."

I saw the hesitation in his face but he seemed to need any possible lifeline as he said, "Ok kid, I'll allow you to make a neighborhood watch. Just don't cause trouble or kill anyone you hear."

I nodded, "Don't worry I will make sure that we will be squeaky clean."

He sighed and I left now with permission to build up my organization.
