Training 101

When Starlight and the others arrived at the company the next day, they were greeted by James. The medical personnel gathered in a one big office. Since it was their first day opening, an experienced doctor will train them.

"Starlight, your father wants to see you. Please follow me." James said. Starlight asked Teresa to save her a seat since she will come back. Teresa nodded.

As Starlight followed James to CEO Daniel's office, Starlight was excited to her father and mother.

"Dad! It's good to see you. I missed you a lot. Mom! Good to see you too!" Starlight hugged Daniel and Crystal. Crystal was happy to see Starlight came back safely.

"Starlight, I heard you saved one of our VIPs, so proud of you." Daniel said. Starlight smiled. It was a relief that he's alive and well now.

"Starlight, you already have medical volunteer experience so I believe you will do well at the training. You are free to come here whenever." Daniel said proudly.

"Dad, thank you for believing in me. I learned a lot when I was abroad. I will make you happy." Starlight hugged Daniel as she said goodbye to him. "See you at home, Dad and mom!" She said happily. Then, she headed down to the training room.

"Starlight really changed, didn't she." David said.

"Hm... For sure, she's 18 years old." Daniel said.

"Daniel, thank you for believing in our daughter." As she held Daniel's hand.

"She will do well. I trust her. All she learnt throughout the years will pay off. She is also preparing for her Pre-medicine examination." Daniel said.

"Wow, Starlight's dream in becoming a doctor feels closer now." David said happily.

Daniel and Crystal were so proud of their Starlight.

As Starlight rushed to the training room, Teresa waved her hand at Starlight. Thank goodness they just started.

Dr. Richard, an experienced medical doctor for more than 30 years, worked for ATECH as a medical doctor and Dr. Patricia as a psychologist. They are training the new medical personnel from different background.

"Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for coming. I am Dr. Richard Zhang. I've been working here in this company for more than 5 years. I've seen many different people, most of them our people who were injured during oversea mission. As you might've known, this is the first time we organized the medical team. Each of you will have a radio so when we need your help, you will all gather here. Make sure to carry it with you all the time. Even when you sleep. Since this is highly intensive work load, make sure to get enough sleep. You don't know when you will all leave. I suggest you packing up your travel documents in a safe place, or in your bags. You guys will work in group of three. Make sure you know each other's contact information. Secondly, you will each be assigned a medical backpack just like this one. Inside contains all the materials and medical kits you need. Make sure to write down emergency contact information and your name. If the items are low in number. you can get it from someone or you can refill it here or at the base, we will have plenty. This medical team will be dispatched each time our people go out oversea. We will be calling you by names, three each times. Please get into your groups so we can train you on how to use the material and the apparatus. I believe each of you have medical background which will make things easier. Dr. Patricia will read out the names. Listen carefully."

As Dr. Patricia called out all the names, each person went to their designated group. Starlight, Teresa, and John were on the same team.

Dr. Richard: "Please move all the chairs to the side, get together with your group, sit on the carpet and make you don't bump into each other. We are going to train you how to use all of the items inside your backpack. Please open them up now. The item you will see is a basic first aid kit with bandages, gauze, latex free gloves and tapes. The surgical masks in the kit is for unprecedented viral outbreak that can happen. The next item is oxygen mask and CPR facial mask. Next one is triangular bandages, you guys already know this so we will skip. Next one is tourniquet, only use it when there's nothing else that can stop bleeding. Next one, we have 10 syringes. Look at the packages inside the bag, each of them are labelled. Topical lidocaine, 10 bottled epinephrine, use it sparingly. You can insert it on the arms and buttocks. Next one, we have advil and tylenol in case any of you or other people are sick. Many of you know how to splint so we will also skip that. There will be few doctors at the base, any people who need stitches will have to go to them. Next one is a small flashlight that can be used when the patient's eye been dilated, the colored eye images are the most common examples of what could happen. Finally, if any patient suffers from tension pneumothorax due to injury and there are no doctors around you or if the base is too far away, this needle will save you. Each of you will get 10 of these. Please read the instruction carefully. Now each of you will practice the location of where the needle will be put in...at the 2nd intercoastal space at the mid-clavicular line at 90 degrees. Only use it for patient with tension pneumothorax. At last, each of you will get a whistle. This will come in handy if you are far away from the base. Don't worry if you cannot get it on the first day. We have another week of training, make sure to come. Dr. Patricia will talk about what to do during mental health crisis next week. This week, please come here each day so each of you can practice. Leave your assigned backpack and the radio here after you're done. After all the training is finished, these will belong to you."

Starlight and Teresa were blown away by the information.

"Starlight, do you think you're ready for this?" Teresa said nervously.

"If it's saving people, I am ready. Don't be scared. You got me." Starlight said.

As the first week gone by, Starlight and the others learned so much things and they were happy to receive new lessons every day. Next week will be another hectic week.
