32 The inside job

The doctor squinted his eyes and shot Joao a look filled with empathy, Joao stared back in anticipation for a question he was most certainly going to shoot down. In the end, he didn't say anything and the ice was broken down by Joao asking to see if they could and in there and talk to the old woman.

"No, at least not for now. We just sedated her so she will be out until the next morning. You should probably take your friend home and get ready for the morning worship." The doctor answered with a calm and slow tone, his eyes scanning Joao's face for any interesting reactions.

Joao remained indifferent, "we would like to attend it in the hospital if that's okay with you."

"Are you sure you don't want to ask your friend for…"

"He will also agree to it, we are spending the night here."

The doctor sighed yet again, he had his clipboard in his hands, and his worker id hanging from around his neck. His face was almost perfect aside from a few blemishes, his skin dark yet was still light enough to put proudly in display his thin reddish lips and his slightly scarred nose. He suddenly started to smile, it was awkward, he had just finished telling Joao all he needed to know and didn't need to be here.

Joao leaned back against Monke, still keeping his eye on the doctor who was becoming displeasing to look at. Could he be trusted? Joao was no longer sure, the sudden change in the atmosphere surrounding the doctor confused Joao's judgment. He didn't know whether this guy was creepy or had done something that could potentially endanger him and Monke.

He then started to do his own observations, looking around the doctor for anything amiss, tattoos, trademark gang, watches and or bracelets. He found none of those and deduced that he needs to tell him to fuck off then.

But before he could say anything the doctor showed him the clipboard, Joao took it and saw an invoice, he had almost forgotten that they took the old lady to a private hospital. He smiled awkwardly as he read through what the expenses were for and signed off on all of them.

"Are you sure you can afford this?" The doctor asked as he brought the clipboard to his face.

"I would have run away if I couldn't," Joao answered in a snarky tone before leaning back into Monke.

"Okay, thanks for your time then. I hope to see you around," he waved at Joao with the same unsettling smile on his face and turned around to leave.

Joao didn't like being made feel uncomfortable, it always gave him murder thoughts. He calmed himself down by notice to the cameras decorating the pearly white hospital hallway's ceiling. Passing by him was a cleaning bot, an automated mop with stickers and marker writings on top from patients who have been to this hospital before.

It was shiny, with its patriotic blue-white, and green color scheme, its near soundless purr as it swept past Joao. He was so breath is taken by it his surrounding was reduced to a pitch black with the only color being of the cleaning bot. He wanted to pick it up and cuddle it but policy forbids and disobeying policy is like breaking the law, and there is no way of cheating yourself out of small matters, it's stupid and a waste of time and resources.

Joao didn't notice that he was being watched, a man or quite possibly a boy in a nurse's outfit, a hairnet, and a mask was slowly approaching him while pushing a trolley. His breathing was loud and rapid, he was blinded by rage and the only him stopping him from blowing his top was the fact that his prey was right in front of him.

His approach was slow and the reason behind it was because this was a special prey that had proved to be vigilant on many occasions. A careless approach might mean his own demise, hell bent on getting rid of Joao alongside Monke the near mindless man checked to see if his gun was at an easy to reach place.

He could just aim from that place but he was a poor shot, in front of Joao and Monke stood two executioners while the third one had gone for a potty break. If he shot and missed it would be the death of him, his best bet was to get the two in point blank range. His personal vendetta against Joao aside he had to get rid of Monke at all costs.

He got closer and closer, stopping at every door to adjust his gun and pretend to be carrying out tasks in them. Joao was too invested in the cleaning bot to pay attention to the impending doom. The cleaning bot had stopped due to taking in something solid and its soft purs were slowly turning into mechanical agony.

Joao pouted at the cute thing and reached out for it, around the same time the trolley was already nearby. The shooter hesitated and for a good reason too, Monty and the third executioner had just walked in. Monty gave him a glare and poked the third, third shifted his jacket to expose a pistol and the shooter bowed and passed by. Faster this time.

"You seem to be enjoying yourself a bit too much, don't you think?"

Joao recognized the voice and his enthusiasm died almost instantly, he still grabbed the little machine and brought it closer to him and ignored it.

"Do you mind telling me why you dragged us out here in the middle of the night?" Monty sounded even more agitated now.

"First of all I never called you, you should be asking yourself that question. Secondly what in the world are you doing here?" Joao looked up and his eyes met with Monty's shades.

Monty was in bright ruby red onesies and a fluffy a mask as usual. He had a laptop pressed up against his chest with both of his arms crossing it.

"I am here because you have been acting suspicious as of late, do you have something to say for yourself, Mr. Joao?"
