5 chapter 5

I pulled into the drive way and I turned my car off. I relaxed in my seat and looked towards my house. It was bright from the lights inside the windows compared to the dim evening light. I looked over the details of the house. Before Derek and I moved in it was tired and old. The house was a two story and had a classic look to it. The porch deck was concrete and had plenty of room for patio furniture. The paint was fading and the roof was worn. Over the years we restored it. We repaint the house a beautiful cream color with white accents. I planted bushes and flowers when we finished and it just tied it all together. I sighed remembering how easy things were with Derek back then. Our relationship was effortless, but now it just seems like an up hill battle. I looked at my watch. I got out of the car when I realized it was almost time for Mary to get off. As I unlocked the door and opened it I could hear Mary talking. "Oh look who's here Leigh!" she said in a high pitched voice. She turned to me just as I had shut the door. She smiled at me and ran into my arms. I scooped her off the floor and gave her kisses on her cheeks. Leigh laughed and my heart melted as it always did. I put her down and looked her over and laughed a little. "She pick out her clothes this moring?" Liegh had on a purple with silver hearts on it and yellow pants with white polka dots on them. Mary looked at me and blushed a little. "No actually I just put it on her because she got a little messy at lunch today so I just put her a new shirt on." I smiled and assured her "I'm just messing with you." After Mary waved goodbye to Liegh and I she walked out the door. I locked it behind her and pulled out my phone. It was still an hour or two before Derek would be off but I'd figure I would call anyway.

His phone rang a few times and he picked up. "Hello?" He said a little distraction in his tone. "Are you busy?" I asked. "I am at work aren't I?" He said back sarcastically. I rolled my eyes and continued with the reason I called. "Will you be home on time tonight?" He was quiet for a minute and mumbled something. "What?" I inquired. "Nothing, no I won't don't worry about dinner tonight. I'm going to order something you should do the same." He said back flatley. Before I could say anything he said he had to go. Something strange happened though. Before the call ended I think I heard him say "Hey babe." but he was getting off the phone why would he say that. Did he even say babe? I brushed it off and opened my and Eric's messages. He hadn't responded to my last text yet. Just then I heard a knock on the door. Leigh was laying on the couch watching some kid show that drove me nuts but she loved so we compromised on it. "Who is it?" I called walking to the door. "Your best friend in the whole wide world" Jacob said loud enough for me to hear him threw the heavy door. Confused on why he came by unannounced I opened the door. "Hello again!" he said and smiled widely at me. "Hello! Want to come in?" I moved aside to motion for him to come in. "Well of course!" Jacob moved gracefully inside trailing his cologne with him. It was soft but robust at the same time. He lifted up a bag I didnt notice he was carrying. "Happy early birthday!" I winced it was a bag from a dress store in town and knowing Jacob's taste it wasn't going to be in my comfort zone. "Oh don't give me that look it's innocent enough for you." He rolled his eyes at me and told me to try it on. I stood in front of the floor length mirror in my room looking myself over. The dress wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was black with lace sleeves that went all the way down to my wrists. The dress itself was fitted but not suffocating. It hugged my hips and showed just a little cleavage. I kept pulling at the hem because it stopped mid thigh. I went back down stairs. Jacob was talking to Leigh about her show when I came back downstairs. Jacob looked up and smiled. "You look gorgeous!" I gave him a look that said yea right and he rolled his eyes. His eyes fell on my tattoo on the side of my thigh. "Hello Goddess it's good to see you again." I looked down at it myself, it was a portrait of Aphrodite with roses around her. I had loved Greek mythology in college and I loved her. Derek of course didn't like it and would ask me to keep it covered. I laughed at his comment and did a turn like I was on a runway. Jacod nodded in approval. "So I want you to wear this on your birthday, when we go out of course." I remembered our plans and the fact I was still waiting for Eric to respond about coming. "The guest you invited hasn't RSVP'D yet." I said matter a factly to Jacob. He didn't say anything, when I looked up he was scrolling threw his phone. "What do you want to eat I'm ordering dinner." I wonder how he knew I was ordering tonight. "How did you know I was ordering out?" "You would already be cooking if you weren't." he said a little annoyed. "You know what I like get something for Leigh too, I'm going to take off this dress." As I went to turn to go back upstairs my phone dinged and I stopped in my tracks. It was Eric he was busy at work so he couldn't respond earlier. He agreed to meet us. Jacob giggled when he looked at the message and said "You you were saying about not RSVPing yet?" I rolled my eyes and walked away. My heart fluttered on the way back to my room. I haven't seen him in years and now I was two days way from seeing him. I replied back see you then and sent him the name if the place were were going and the time. I took a deep breath trying to calm my wild heart. Hopefully these two days drag by.
