23 I don't need a doctor

Pei Xingcheng never escaped the haunting feeling that his mother harbored deep-seated resentment towards him throughout his life. She seemed to view him as a usurper, always ready to snatch away what rightfully belonged to his elder brother.

Despite his genuine desire to be accepted and loved as an integral part of their family, he could never shake off this overwhelming sense of alienation. Eventually, he had to accept the bitter truth that his long-cherished dream of a happy, united family was nothing but a futile fantasy.

Despite this, a small voice in his heart told him that no matter how much his mother despised him, she would never kill him. She could have done it years ago if she had wanted to.

"It's not her," he murmured quietly.

Miss Ghost was taken aback by the assurance in his words. "How can you be so sure?"

"If she wanted me dead, I would have been dead years ago," he explained.

"That's true," Miss Ghost agreed.

However, the question still remained. If not her, then who else? Who wants to assassinate Pei Xincgheng? Who wants him to die? And for what reason?

As far as she knew, Pei Xingcheng never harmed anyone. So, what benefit could that person get by wanting him dead? She had to investigate and figure this out.

Pei Xingcheng glanced at her from the corner of his eyes and noticed her lost look. He knew she must be thinking about the person who wanted to kill him. With a roll of his eye, he said, "You don't worry about it. My big brother is looking into this matter. He will soon find out th person behind my accident."

Miss Ghost nodded.

Just then, Pei Qinshan interrupted him. "Xingcheng, did you say something?"

Immediately, Pei Xingcheng was alarmed. Keeping his expression as normal as possible, he shook his head and replied, "No. I didn't say anything."

"But I heard you talking," Pei Qinshan looked at him with worry in his eyes.

Pei Xingcheng panicked immediately. He did not want everyone to think he was insane after this incident. Just as he was thinking of an excuse, Miss Ghost helped him.

"Say you were talking to yourself," she said.

Pei Xingcheng quickly repeated it. "Big brother, I was talking to myself."

"Oh," Pei Qinshan nodded on the surface, but he became highly suspicious in his heart.

It didn't even take a second for Pei Xingcheng to realize that his big brother didn't believe his words. His heart sank, and he couldn't help but question. "What's wrong, big brother?"

"Xingcheng, how are you feeling today?"

"I'm feeling good," he replied, smiling.

"Are you sure? If you are not feeling okay, I can call a doctor for you."

"No!" Pei Xingcheng exclaimed abruptly. After realizing that his reaction was excessive, he helplessly pinched his nose and pouted his lips. "Brother, I'm okay. I don't need a doctor."

"Okay, then." Pei Qinshan agreed.

Pei Xingcheng felt relieved knowing that his older brother believed him. However, he was caught off guard when his brother asked, "Why did you treat Mother that way?"

"I-I... I... I... that...." Pei Xingcheng stammered, not knowing what to say. Once again, he glanced at Miss Ghost for help, hoping that she would help him like earlier.

Miss Ghost saw his crying expression and patted her chest with an expression of 'Don't fear when I am here.'

"Actually, Big Brother, there is a problem," she said.

Pei Xingcheng frowned, not liking that sentence. What the hell was she getting him to say?

With a concerned and distrustful look, he gazed at her. Miss Ghost let out a sigh upon noticing this. "Say this," she advised. "Trust me. These words will be the only explanation for your weird behavior. Otherwise, your older brother may become suspicious of you."

Though doubtful, Pei Qinshan had to agree with her.

With a roll of his eyes, he repeated those words. "Big brother, there is a problem."

Upon hearing this, Pei Qinshan became concerned and asked anxiously, "What's wrong, Xingcheng?"

Miss Ghost replied, "I need a good doctor to help me find my lost brain!"

Without hesitation, Pei Xingcheng repeated her words, saying, "Big brother, I need a good doctor to find my lost brain!"

Pei Qinshan: "........."

The servants: ".........."

"You want to find what?" Pei Qinshan asked, giving him a weird look.

Pei Xingcheng noticed the unusual expressions of his elder brother and the surrounding servants. He also caught a glimpse of Miss Ghost, who was trying to suppress her laughter by covering her mouth.

Immediately, his mind becomes alert. He recalled the words he had uttered to his brother, and upon realizing what he had said, his eyes widened in terror. His cheeks heated up with embarrassment and anger.

"No, no, no, I didn't mean it like that, I didn't mean it like that," he tried to clarify. However, the more he tried to explain, his older brother's expression became odd.

"I didn't say that. It was all her -" he paused all of a sudden.

What could he do? He couldn't say that it was this annoying ghost's fault. If he did, his big brother would surely put him in a mental asylum for treatment.

With a sigh, he said, "Big brother, I was just kidding. You know, it is said that laughter is the best medicine, so I was trying to make you laugh."

"Xingcheng, I understand, but I think you are the one who needs medicine the most," he said with an understanding look and then burst out laughing.

Seeing him laugh, Miss Ghost also burst out laughing.

Pei Xingcheng: "......."

"Brother, please stop laughing. It's not funny," complained Pei Xingcheng. He glared at Miss Ghost, blaming her for the situation.

Miss Ghost shrugged in response while Pei Qinshan stopped laughing. "Okay, okay, don't be angry. I am not laughing anymore, but seriously, Xincheng, what's happened to you? Why are you behaving so weirdly?" he inquired, half-curious and half-concerned.

"I don't know. Maybe, it's because I haven't recovered from my accident yet," he said grumpily.

"Maybe," Pei Qinshan sighed slowly.
