1 Lucky Curse

I was named after my mother as she was named after hers. It was a bit of a tradition in our family. We always had the same name. And if we had sisters they would be named the same thing. It was a bit annoying because we would just have numbers that said which one was which. I was the 89th Curse in the family. My sister was the 91st. When I say curse I mean both that our names were curse and that we are the curse.

But see, I have a special curse. The number 89 was always the lucky number in the family. But I think it was an extra curse for me, only because my family is selfless, they believed me to be lucky. They assumed that if anyone were around them for too long then they would become cursed. So they sent me away.

They sent me away to an orphanage when I was 2 years old. The orphanage that I stayed in was one of the best. People got adopted all the time. But I never had any time to get to know any of them that way.

Only a month after I was put in the orphanage I was adopted. It had to be these really rich people that lived so very far away from everyone else. I started going to a rich people school when I was 5 years old. I was very pretty as a kid so everyone avoided me. No one wanted to talk to the "born lucky" one. Apparently I hadn't worked for anything in my life. Just because I was pretty.

My life has always been like this. I was so lucky in other people's perspectives. But in mine, it was a life of mistakes and misfortune — a curse.

Chapter 1

Me, maman, and papa were sitting at the far end of the table. In our lavish dining room the utensils clattering echoed throughout the room. I was almost done with my food when maman spoke up.

"So, Aurora, do you have your uniform all ready for the first day of school tomorrow?" Maman asked, taking another bite of food. I nodded and finished my food quickly. I was eager to get upstairs and see Curse 91, my sister. She visits me every Sunday on my windowsill. She was hoping that 91 wasn't there already because she only has 30 minutes with her till she needs to go back to her house.

I hurried upstairs and swung my door open. I looked around and thankfully didn't see 91's short orange hair anywhere. I walked over to my bed, moved my canopy to the side and layed down on the silky soft red pillows piled up on my bed. I heard a rapping on the window and jumped out of bed.

When I went to the window, my bright orange eyes met 91's red ones. I unlocked the window and pulled it open. I closed the window with brown hair falling on my face. I walked over to my vanity and picked up a golden hair clip. I pulled my rough bangs on the top of my head and clipped it there.

"So," I said picking up my hair brush and walking over to her. "What hairstyle would you like today madam?" I said laughing, bowing, in a teasing manner.

"Ah, I would like a french braid today if you don't mind, miss." We both started laughing.

"Sounds good 91." I smiled brushing her hair. "Hey, did you know I'm starting Enterprise High tomorrow? Its this super-"

"Enterprise High?! That rich place?" 91 turned to face me with a worried expression. I quickly covered her mouth and shoved her in the closet. I sat down at my vanity and started brushing my hair. We heard a knock on the door. It opened and Maman came in.

"Is everything okay Aurora?" I nodded. "Ok, well, it's time for bed now. The bath is being drawn now. Come out in 10?"

"Yes, Maman. Thank you." I smiled and she smiled back. She closed the door behind her and I whipped my head towards the closet. I moved my head so fast that it knocked everything off the vanity. I closed my eyes when I heard the makeup and hair products hit the floor and roll away.

91 snickered. "Your mom calls you Aurora?" 91 walked out of the closet. "Aaaand, you're going to Enterprise High? Wow, my big sis… at Enterprise." She smiled and walked over to me, and gave me a big hug. "I've got to go now, and so do you. This time you'll make friends. I'll be back next sunday. Bye." 91 walked to the window and gave me a wink. "Maybe you'll have more than a friend next time I see you." 91 smirked and left me dumbfounded.

"Get back here you sneaky-!" I whispered. I sighed, took my glasses off, and went to the bathroom to take a shower.

I couldn't believe I had to wear this. I was in my room unzipping the garment bag that had my "uniform" in it. It had better be whatever everyone else was wearing because I would never wear a maid costume if no one else was. I shrugged it off and started putting it on. It was way more complicated to put on than people would think. Either way I put it on and went downstairs. I walked into the dining room and saw maman and papa eating breakfast already. Papa looked over at me.

"Breakfast is at the school for you. So is lunch. The chauffeur is waiting for you out front. Have a good day at school." Papa said going back to his food.

"Thank you papa." I went to the door and got in the car. The drive to school was short but it was still as uncomfortable as ever. When the car stopped I looked out the window to see many other people in maid costumes and tuxedos. I sighed in relief and got out of the car. I closed the car door and it drove off. I walked with the rest of the people through the gates into the fancy school.

We all headed to the assembly room for the start of school. I put my hand in my pocket making sure that my schedule was still there. I sighed and looked around me. Some people looked just as nervous as me. Others looked worse.

When we all gathered in the assembly room and round a seat to sit in, a woman in a maid outfit walked on to the stage. She looked middle aged and had beautiful silky blonde hair. She smiled at the crowd and held the microphone.

"Hello, students, I am so glad you could make it today, my name is Miss. Ash and I am your headmistress. I would like to welcome you to the best public school in Qrin. Now we will hear from one of our teachers, Mr. Kokio."

"Hello, I am Mr. Kokio…" I spaced out for most of the speech. "I hope you have a wonderful first day at Enterprise High. Thank you." I clapped along with the rest of the students. We all got up out of our chairs and moved towards the halls which had out lockers. I pulled out the locker key that I had gotten from my parents and looked at the number. Number 89. What an easy thing to remember. It's my name.

I walked down the hall towards number 89. "81...83...85...87...89." There it was. I opened my locker and saw a little white ribbon on the bottom of it. I picked it up and decided that it could look very nice in my hair. So I took a lock of my hair and tied the ribbon in a pretty bow. "There." I said aloud. I took out my schedule and looked at what class I had first. It was literature. I smiled to myself thinking about the book I was read to by my mother when I was still a child. I had always liked books so this class might end up being my favorite. I walked into the class and saw that only a few people were already there. I smiled to myself seeing that I wasn't late. I found a seat near the back, next to the window.

I was staring out the window when someone tapped my shoulder, and pointed to the front of the class. The room was full of people now and everyone was looking at me. The teacher spoke up.

"What is your name miss?" He asked in a stern tone. I realized that the teacher was the one from the assembly, Mr. Kokio.

"Oh, umm, 80-" right... I don't refer to 89 during school. "Aurora. Tatsusake Aurora."

"You don't seem to sure of that." The teacher said to you. A couple students chuckled and some just stared at you a little happy that there was something interesting happening. "Would you like to join us in our lesson Miss Tatsusake?"

"Umm, yes sorry." I looked up to the front of the classroom and listened to the teacher. The class was more boring than I thought it would be. My attention drifted to a boy who was still looking at me as if I were a fragile object that would break at any moment. After a while he smirked at me and I was taken out of my daze. I realized that I was staring at him for a while. My mouth made the shape of an "o" as I looked down at my desk then back up to the boy. I mouthed to him; "I was daydreaming."

He smiled at me and mouthed back; "I know this class is boring" dragging out the 'o' in the boring. I smiled back at him. Looks like I've made an acquaintance of some kind on my first day of school. 91's gonna love this.
