4 Episode 3: Learning and Adjustment (2)

On the next day, I did not have dreams. I was hoping to have more information about that girl but no such luck.

I head outside and was surprised to see the sun was already quite high up in the sky. It is probably 9 or 10.

I realized that I woke up quite late.

This is bad news. I can only work when there is daylight. Even though I am anxious to gather supplies quickly and travel to find a way home, I am not desperate enough to attempt working at night.

I did a quick look in the surroundings to check for hostile mobs. Even though I wasted a lot of daylight by waking up late, it doesn't mean I should be careless.

I quickly head to the farm to see the crops.

On my way there, I come across three chickens.

I was so surprised to see other living things aside from me.

I quickly harvest some seeds by breaking grass in the surroundings to lure the chickens to the farm.

As I am luring the chicken towards the farm, I suddenly thought that it is not a good idea to let animals roam around inside the fence. They might trample or eat the crops. They also might dirty the only water source that I have.

I quickly chop some trees in the vicinity and build a temporary coop near the farm.

The coop that I build is 5 by 5 wide so it has 3 by 3 space inside using fences. I also build a roof using half wood slab to protect the chickens from rain and to have shade from the sun. I used half wood slabs to save on wood.

I also learn that you can place half slabs here vertically unlike in the game. It is really useful. I can build future temporary houses with fewer resources and among other things.

I tried to feed the chickens with seeds that I gathered but I don't know how. In the game, you just have to right click on the chickens to feed them. They also breed if two of them are feed at the same time even though that not how chickens work in real life.

I tried throwing the seeds inside the coop to see what will happen. They started pecking on the seeds. Though I didn't see any breeding, I am glad to see that they are eating.

Now I just have to wait for them to lay some eggs and see how to increase their population. Throwing eggs on the ground is also the other way on getting baby chickens in the game but I am not trying it here. I don't know how did they get the idea of having baby chicks by breaking eggs but that is not how chicken farming works in real life. I will try laying it on the ground to see if it hatches or build some sort of house to have the mommy chicken sit on them.

I will also try cooking the eggs. Eggs in Minecraft is used just for crafting cakes and pumpkin pies but this is a different world so it is possible to cook them. I just need to find a way to craft some sort of pan or try cooking it in the furnace.

After feeding the chickens, I went inside the farm to inspect the crops.

Interestingly enough, the crops grew a little. I compared it to the height of a block. They are about a sixth or seventh of a block. Which means it takes about a week or so to harvest a wheat. I am so glad about this. I thought it will take a month for the wheat to grow here and I just have to live on apples.

I am also happy to have some chickens. I was starting to worry that I might be the only living creature in this world. So, this means there are also sheep in here. I should probably find some so I can harvest wool and make a bed. I getting sick of sleeping on the cold floor.

I exited the farm and start to find a suitable place to build a mine shaft.

My plan for today is to start mining stones.

I am so sick of using wooden tools. I already have broken quite a lot of wooden axes for chopping trees. It takes a lot of time to gather wood or tilting the dirt to turn into farm land using wooden tools. It is time to upgrade to stone tools.

The broken axes are in my inventory. Typically, in the game, all tools or items when they run out of durability they break and vanish into existence. But here, they went back to the inventory. I don't know what I'm going to do with broken tools but they are made of wood so I might use them for fuel. I also started to think what will happen to iron or diamond tools if they get broken but I don't have any iron or diamonds so no point in thinking about it right now.

I am thinking of building a mine shaft away from my home and farm. I don't want it close to the house in case something goes wrong and I managed to create a landslide. I don't know how I'm going to start my mine shaft but seeing how trees fall here if you break its trunk means that blocks don't typically float here. I also don't want to break the unwritten law in Minecraft.

And that is 'Never dig straight down'.

I don't want to start digging into the ground and fall into lava or dig straight through to a cave and fall in a great height so mine shaft seems to be a great option right now. Building a quarry is also an option but I don't have the time and strength for it. If only I have good tools then maybe I can do it. I still also don't fully understand the physics of this world so I have to be very careful.

I decided to build a mine shaft in the north of my house. It is about 70 to 80 blocks away.

There is a tall mountain here. It is about 12 blocks high. Perfect to carve a 3 by 3 hole on its side.

I started digging on the side of the mountain.

After digging for about 3 blocks deep, I place 2 fences on each side of the tunnel and place oak planks on top of it. It is used to support the top and sides of the tunnel to prevent from caving. I got the idea from the game though support beams in the game are useless since the game has different physics. I plan to place support beams every 5 blocks.

After digging for like 6 blocks deep of dirt, I finally found some stones.

I crafted a wooden pickax and started mining one of the stones. It takes a really long time for the stone to break. It is even harder than chopping wood or tilting dirt. It seems that in this world not only farming is difficult but also is mining.

After mining 3 stones, I have enough materials to make my first stone tool.

I crafted a stone pickax. I wield it in my right hand and noticed that it is a little bit heavy than the wooden pickax. I have no qualms about it since stone is heavier than wood so it makes sense.

I started mining using the stone pickax. It still slow to break stones but it is at least better than the wooden pickax.

After mining for a while, I noticed that it is getting really dark in the tunnel and hard to see anything. I managed to find an iron ore vein but was hoping to stumble some coal to create some torches but there nothing here. I can craft a furnace and burn the wood into charcoal but I'm saving the cobblestones for something. I also come across some gravel. I gathered some of it since it going to be useful in the future. I also want some flint to craft certain items like arrows or flint and steel.

The iron ore that I found was at least 8 blocks. I was worried that it will be only less than that considering how much effort I put in mining this tunnel. I wasn't expecting to find iron ore in this mountain but was happy to find some.

I was getting really tired of all the mining and the sun is about to go down.

I exited the mine shaft and head back home.

The distance of the mine shaft and the house is quite a bit far and there are oak trees and hills in the way. I plan to tear down all the trees in the way and flatten the ground to have easier access to the mine shaft.

When I reached home, I immediately sat on the oak stair that I use as a chair.

I open my inventory to see how much cobblestone I mined and how much resources I have.

I still have a dozen of apples. I eat about 5 to 6 apples a day so I have 2 days' worth of food. I'm getting tired of eating apples but there still a week before I can harvest the wheat. There are also three chickens but I still don't know how to increase their number so I'm not planning to butcher them yet. I didn't even know if I can kill a living being but I have to do it in order to survive this world. I can also try searching for more animals but I don't want to walk far from home considering it is easy to get lost in this world. Maybe I will get lucky tomorrow and some animals will wander in my territory like what happen today.

I have little wood in my inventory since I keep building fences, coop and support beams. It is nice to have a lot of wood stored. I probably start early morning tomorrow chopping trees to stockpile some wood. I can craft stone ax now so gathering woods should be faster and easier.

I have 8 iron ores, 2 flints and half a stack of cobblestone. I wasn't expecting to mine some iron ores but I was hoping to gather a lot more stones. I was planning in upgrading my home today. I plan to build a storage area, a bedroom and a living room. Then I remember that I can place half slabs vertically here but I don't want to cheap on my house. My house is the only thing protecting me from monsters so I have to build it thick and strong.

I should try smelting the irons ores into iron ingots but I don't want to place a furnace inside the house considering it is made of wood. Burning the only living place in the night is not a good idea. I also can't do it outside considering it is already dark so maybe I should do it tomorrow.

It is great to have 8 iron ingots. I can craft an iron pickax and an iron ax. I don't know how rare to find ores here so I should probably save it and just use stone tools for now.

In my inventory, there is also some junk like flowers I picked up the yesterday and broken tools. I should store them elsewhere.

I crafted two wooden chests using oak planks. I placed the double chest on the other side of the house. It is getting cramped in here but I ignored it since my house will be upgraded tomorrow or probably in the future.

I tried opening the chest and a GUI suddenly appear in front of me. It has 54 empty storage slots. It has double the storage capacity than my inventory. I transferred all the unnecessary items in the chest.

After transferring things and checking my inventory, I lie down to sleep. I hope that I will be able to wake up early tomorrow.
