But he couldn’t shake the feeling—or rather the fervent hope—that whatever was on this misplaced knob would be the way to break down the very tall wall that was now between them.

As if summoned by his thoughts, Gideon sauntered into the kitchen. Jesse swallowed, holding up the small object. “Does this seem familiar to you?”

Gideon plucked it from his fingers, turning it over in his hands. A slow frown drew his brows together, and he held it up to his nose, taking a long sniff.

“This is from the warehouse,” he said. “How’d you get it?”

“I went to the warehouse and found it, Gideon.” He arched his brow. “You know, as part of the investigation we’re ostensibly conducting.” Which was a lie, but he didn’t think Gideon would call him a liar to his face.

Gideon’s frown deepened. “I thought we agreed you were going to stay away from there.”
