X-Gene Ascension

Immense pain filled Ross's mind as the acid of the pit melted awaited his arms and legs. He couldn't even let out a scream as his throat burned away too quickly to produce any sound. His entire being was on the edge of adrenaline and his will was pushed beyond anything he had known.

'Is this how it ends? My second chance in this pure earth?' He thought to himself sadly.

Then, something seemed to have changed in him right at this moment. As if time slowed down and his two lives flashed through his eyes. His mind was completely blank before suddenly his remaining eyes sharpened into a resolve only seen in the most hardened warriors in war.

'So be it. BUT I WON'T GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT!' He mentally screamed.

Then, a change began to happen in his X-gene. It began transforming into something greater, the ascension pool was working. Ross didn't know if Apocalypse was actually trying to evolve their X-Genes or planning to use their lives for some other purpose. But his gene was actually evolving.

All that remained left of Ross's body was the upper half of his skull, poking out of the pool. His jawbone was dangling off his skull like a broken hinge of a door, but his eyes remained focused on the golden mutant on the ledge above him. He stared directly into the golden mutant's eyes and held eye contact rebelliously.

And then, it was as if his mind exploded outward in a white plane. Time slowed down to a complete crawl, and he could see the vague black resentment around him much more clearly. It was human faces, thousands of mutants, looking at him with hideous expressions twisted with anger and resentment.

Ross looked down at himself and realized he was floating. The final remains of bodies head was right below him. His soul was outside of his body. Just when he thought he might be able to escape as a soul, the thousands of resentful mutants roared at him.

*Roar*

Black chains, dripping with blood, pierced into his soul-body from each of the thousands of resentful mutants.

"ARG!" Ross screamed as he felt a pain ten thousand times worse than he had ever felt in his life.

Chaotic thoughts filled with resentment, hatred, and anger at dying in this pit filled his mind.

It seemed like the thousands of resentful souls wanted to pull him down. It wasn't fair if he escaped from here alone. It wasn't fair to them that he could live when they had died. They wanted Ross to feel what they do.

"NOO! Even if you hate that you died, even if you hate the apocalypse and feel deceived. I WILL NOT LET HIM TAKE MY NEW LIFE AWAY." Ross screamed back at them and pulled against their chains.

*Clatter* *Clatter*

*ROAR*

Ross pulled as he pulled the thousands of souls up with him as he forced his soul to fly upward.

Strange enough, Ross's own life began to flash in the reverse direction through the chains attached to him. His resolve to live his life, his resolve to save the planet in his last life, and the images of wanting to live caused the aggression in the mutant souls to calm down slightly. The resentment that filled the chains began to melt away slowly. With every slight movement upward Ross attained, the chains began to fade from black to grey, and then to white.

As this happened, even Ross himself didn't realize that his own will was slowly changing after being pushed beyond the limits. A slightly golden glow came from his soul and his reasons for moving forward became more and more purely connected to those thousands of souls below him.

"I can't afford to die. All of your sacrifices will also be for nothing." Ross's heart was no longer scared of the resentful mutant souls trying to pull him down.

Instead, he was filled with a sense of empathy. He was seeing, and reliving all the memories of each person's soul attached to him. He saw the woman who longed to enter the guard. The man who couldn't see and hoped to paint the sun.

When he looked back over his shoulder, he didn't see the resentful twisted souls filled with black aura. Instead, he saw normal human faces. As their grey color faded to white, and an unknown amount of time passed, their features grew easier to make out.

After a while, when he didn't feel any more resistance from the chains digging into his flesh he looked back.

He saw, thousands of souls smiling at him from below.

*clatter*

An older man stepped forward, the white chains clinking as he moved.

"Ross, thank you for your help." He bowed.

"We were trapped in resentment and with your help, we are finally like ourselves again." He smiled, showing off his missing teeth.

"Old Greman, I-" Ross responded sadly. He knew every soul here now. After watching their lives, he knew each of them. And they all knew him.

"Ross, why do you want to live so bad? This place, this world... is just a book in your old world. If everything is predestined, if the story is already written, why are you trying so hard? " Old Greman asked.

Ross remained silent before answering.

"I-... I just wanted to live because I got this second chance. " Ross said truthfully, fidgeting slightly.

"But now... I'm not sure." He finished.

Old Greman nodded and glanced at the other souls around him.

"Then, let me speak for myself here, I'll help you."

"I as well!"

"Me too."

"Count me in."

"Ross, live for me."

Thousands of voices came from the souls below Ross, all of them supporting him. Leaving him completely speechless.

Old Greman once again spoke for the crowd and smiled.

"Live well... Ross."

In a burst of white particles, the thousands of souls poured in through the chains connected to him and sucked his soul back into his severed body's head. Reality seemed to resume at this moment, as crackles of golden electricity pulsed out from Ross's severed head and the entire pool of dark blood spun into a whirlpool.
