The Ring
Mumut took a glass of water and drank it while sitting next to Harti. Yeni, who just came into the pantry, joined them. Her eyes now fixed on the ring on Mumut's finger. Yeni looked at the ring with jealousy. The elegant ring with a large heart-shaped diamond looked gorgeous on Mumut's ring finger.
A week ago, Mumut was crying because she hospitalized her mother, and now she was wearing an expensive-looking ring.
Yeni got even more jealous when Mumut went to her locker, took out her backpack, took out a laptop from it, and put it on the table! A MacBook? Yeni glared at the object while Mumut turned on her MacBook and then stuck the flash disk in there. Mumut clicked on the file and then opened her thesis file. She reread the thesis and corrected a few sentences that didn't feel right. After she was satisfied with the correction, Mumut saved the laptop's changes, took out the flash drive from her MacBook, and then turned it off.
When she closed her laptop, Mumut was surprised to find Yeni's envious expression at her, even though she was smiling. Mumut smiled back, then put her MacBook back into the bag.
"Wow!" Yeni said, holding Mumut's hand to look at the diamond ring on her finger.
Mumut withdrew her hand and placed it under the table. Mumut didn't want to wear the ring while she was in the office, but Bian forbade him. Mumut was also afraid that she would lose the ring, so she kept wearing it.
"So, are you married, Mut?" Yeni asked in an investigating tone.
Mumut just smiled. Mumut was not in the mood to respond to Yeni because everything that girl heard would turn into gossip.
"Perhaps you've become a mistress. That's why you can't answer my question. What's your husband's name, where does he work?"
Mumut looked at Yeni lazily. However, if she didn't respond to her question, Yeni would investigate her even more.
"The point is, I'm married, with whom and blah, blah, blah, it will be a secret!" replied Mumut as she stood up, Mumut went to her locker and put her backpack in there.
"Yes, it's Mumut's business, what do you want to come here?" Harti was getting annoyed with Yeni.
"Uh, where's Hari?" Yeni asked, staring at Harti and Mumut.
"You can call, why do you have to come here?" said Harti curtly.
"I have something important to tell him," she said with a slight smile.
"He's delivering drinks to the directors, and he'll done soon." Harti's tone has gentled, not as sharp as before.
Hari came in not long after. He smiled and greeted them. He directly sat next to Yeni, and Yeni asked him to talk outside for a while.
"Wait a minute, I just arrived. Why don't you tell me here?" replied Hari.
Yeni looked at Mumut and Harti, but they didn't budge.
Suddenly Hari's gaze fell on the ring that Mumut was wearing, and he felt hurt. The ring was a diamond ring that he couldn't afford. Hari was sure that the ring was a wedding ring because Mumut had never worn a ring before. Hari thought that Mumut had married a rich man because she needed money for her mother's treatment. Hari remembered that when he visited Mumut's mother, Mumut's mother was not in the third class, but the VVIP room, or in the pavilion, while Mumut was so distraught about the hospital fee previously.
Hari took a deep breath. Since the first time, he had liked that girl, but Mumut seemed not to understand the love signals he sent to her. And now, suddenly, the girl belonged to someone else. Hari realized that all this time, Mumut had always seen him as just a friend or brother.
"Congratulations on your marriage, Mut," said Hari with a smile. He tried to be as sincere as possible when he said it.
"Thank you, Bro," replied Mumut, clasping her hands.
Hari wanted to ask who the lucky man had married her, but he saw that Mumut doesn't want to talk about it. Hari didn't ask further, mostly because Yeni was there, and that girl would spread gossip about it.
"You said there was something that you want to tell me, so tell me!" Hari said to Yeni, and they stepped out of the pantry.
Yeni lazily followed Hari because she wanted to stay in the pantry to hear Hari's further questions to Mumut about her marriage to tell her friends in more detail about Mumut.
