Anyway, the moment passed and the world did not end.

“So,” I said, looking at the slate. “A weapon.”

I watched as he experimentally hit the edge of one piece of slate against the broad side of another. The former split into two pieces, one larger, one smaller. He was examining the smaller, when I thought of something.

“Hey,” I said. “How about, you do the blade, and I’ll try to make a handle.”

He looked at me, considered, and nodded.

“Knife first?” I suggested. He nodded.

So, we started our respective activities. Sometimes I watched him work—out of basic curiosity as well as appreciation. But, once he got into his stuff, the Marine seemed focused entirely on what he was doing, in a way that really impressed me. And, to see those large hands, the entire Marine in fact, concentrating with such care on fine craftwork, well, it was just plain beautiful—not to mention arousing.
