Meeting an old friend

Tuesday 12th March, another ordinary day, just like all the others. I was walking down the street holding grocery bags, counting how many more steps it will take to reach home in my bed. I could see my house from where I was. Roughly 300 footsteps left.

"Why, hello Maila! how are you dear?"

I looked up to see Mrs. Martha in front of me with a kind smile. I smiled back, although it was a little crooked from not being in used in a long while.

" Hi, Mrs. Martha. I'm doing great. How about you? How's Mrs. Snow ball?" I asked hurriedly. Knowing Mrs. Martha, she's going to ask about my parents and I'm never in a mood to talk about them.

Mrs. Martha was a family friend, sort of like a grandmother to me. Both my actual grandmothers are dead and coincidentally both my parents were the only child to them both.

" I'm good, getting my usual exercise today. Heard that rain is gonna pour down later, so I came out earlier. Have to stretch out these old bones" she laughed jokingly.

" Though I do wish that Robert would come out with me once in a while, " she said sighing sadly.

Mrs. Martha was a chatterbox, I didn't mind though, she was always such a joy to speak to. As I was listening to her ramble on, I noticed that she seemed a little more aged since the last time I saw her. There were more grey hairs and wrinkles on her face but it seemed that she was still her lively old self.

" I hope all was well" I wondered thoughtfully while switching the bags to my right hand.

" Oh! Right, Mrs snowball, she's unusually moody these days. Must be the weather. I have to carry her to the vet to get her checked up. Thanks for asking love, maybe when you have time you can come to visit, she misses you, you know. Why don't you come over tomorrow? That would be wonderful! And your parents can come as well, it'll be like a little get together " she said seemingly excited of the idea.

" Oh no, I couldn't possibly Mrs. Martha. My parents are not around as well. They are on a business trip." I said frankly. As much as I love Mrs. Martha, her husband Robert I dislike thoroughly. He was a mean old man, with a nasty personality. Always had something bad to say about everything. I never knew why Mrs. Martha loved him to bits.

" Oh," she said sadly.

" Well, you know where I live. Come by and visit sometime ok? When your parents get back tell them I asked after them." she said smiling, though her smile wasn't as bright as before.

" Yes, Mrs. Martha. I'll visit you soon. Tell snowball I said hello and I hope her mood improves." I said as I gave her a big bear hug.

" Yes dearie, I will. Ok on your way now. See you soon."

" Goodbye!" said while waving.

As I stepped through the doors of my house, I was enveloped in warmth. I had left the heater on when I went out to the supermarket earlier. I put all the bags on the table and took off my coat, then I hung it on the chair closest to me. I walked to the kitchen grabbed an apple then headed upstairs. My only friend Sharon invited me to a party near her house and I had every intention to go. Staying in this house was not only boring but memory inducing and I don't want any of it.

I lay on my bed on my back, with the apple still in my mouth.

Since I was young I've always been a little of a black sheep doing my own thing. I never cared though, however, Sharon was a sweet little thing. She befriended me when I moved to this city when I was 8. She was always bullied for being soft-spoken but always had me to beat up the bullies. When we entered high school though, she got more and more popular with her cute girl next door looks and personality but she never forgot me and always knew which dark corner to find me in. I smiled fondly at the memory.

Shaking my self out of memory lane, I thought sarcastically ' Oh, whatever shall I wear!". My closet was filled to the brim with clothes. I got up browsing through. My style of clothes went from slightly gothic to elegantly casual but it all depended on my mood. My hand landed on a sexy little red and black lace-up number, it was knee length with black lace sleeves and red chiffon bottom. The lace went up like a turtle neck and dropped elegantly around my neckline. I decided right there, that this was what I was wearing. I paired it with a ruby red drop earring and black open-toed one strap high heels. I finished eating the apple, grabbed my towel and went to the shower.

" Tonight is going to be fun" I smiled mischievously.
